Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Canva, a digital literacy tool, on enhancing student engagement and academic performance through the lens of Self-Determination Theory by Johnmarshall Reeve (2012). Using qualitative methods, data were collected from student responses via questionnaires. The findings reveal that Canva positively influences the four dimensions of engagement: behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and agentic. Behavioral engagement is supported through its intuitive tools that promote focus and persistence. Emotional engagement is enhanced by evoking positive emotions and reducing stress. Cognitive engagement is fostered by encouraging critical thinking and creativity, while agentic engagement empowers students to take ownership of their learning processes. Despite challenges such as limited free features, students effectively utilized Canva’s resources to overcome these barriers. The study concludes that Canva offers a transformative approach to education, promoting 21st-century skills and bridging traditional learning with digital literacy. Future improvements could expand free templates, collaborative features, and educational resources, further amplifying its benefits in academic settings.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the role of digital literacy in helping students assess the validity of skincare product advertisement claims, particularly exaggerated or hyperbolic claims often found in beauty product advertisements on social media. Using a qualitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design, this study involved 30 students of the English Literature Study Program at Medan State University as respondents who had basic knowledge of digital literacy and familiarity with skincare product advertisements. Data were collected through an online survey using a Likert scale to measure students' perceptions of advertising claims and the influence of digital literacy in evaluating those claims. The results showed that the majority of respondents had the ability to distinguish between valid and invalid claims thanks to their digital literacy. In addition, most students use the internet as the main source to verify advertising claims. However, there are still a small number of students who have not utilized digital literacy optimally. Overall, this study confirms the importance of digital literacy in helping students develop a critical attitude towards advertisements and can play a role in encouraging them to become smarter consumers who are skeptical of unrealistic claims in beauty product advertisements.

Abstract

Language literacy is essential for effective communication, especially in text-based interactions where nonverbal cues are absent. This study aims to explore the mediating role of feedback in clarifying ambiguity in text messages among students. While there is already research on feedback and language literacy, there is a gap regarding how feedback can specifically address ambiguity in digital communication. Using a descriptive survey method, data was collected from 30 students at Medan State University through a questionnaire distributed via WhatsApp. The analysis results show that syntactic ambiguity is the most prevalent type, followed by semantic and referential ambiguity. The findings showed that feedback strategies such as repetition, reformulation, and explicit clarification significantly improved understanding and reduced miscommunication. Students reported that these strategies helped clarify ambiguous messages and encouraged clearer interactions with the lecturer. In conclusion, effective feedback mechanisms are essential for improving communication clarity in text messages, especially in academic contexts. This study underscores the importance of developing feedback literacy among university students to effectively navigate ambiguity, thereby improving their language literacy and overall communication skills. Further research can extend these findings by exploring different contexts and demographics to generalize the results.

Abstract

This research uses a qualitative method motivated by the rampant spread of political hoaxes through social media, especially TikTok, which is a popular platform for novice voters. The purpose of this study is to analyze the perceptions and behaviors of Medan State University students towards the North Sumatra Election hoax on TikTok. Data were obtained through an online survey using Google Form, observation, and thematic analysis. The data collected was then analyzed using the New Media Literacy theory by Jenkins et al. (2009). The results revealed that although students are quite adept at using digital media, they still have difficulty verifying political information. Their low political literacy makes them vulnerable to being exposed to and contributing to the spread of hoaxes.

Abstract

This research examines the dilemma between language ethics and freedom of expression in relation to hate speech on social media. A mandatory human right, freedom of expression allows people to express their opinions and encourages democratic society. Abstract

The transformation of the Indonesian language in the digital era not only creates challenges for, but also opens up great opportunities for dynamic and adaptive language development. The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of the Indonesian language in the digital era including the challenges and opportunities in the current development of the language. This study uses a descriptive qualitative library research approach, which is a method commonly used in social and linguistic research. Data analysis was carried out using the Miles interactive method which includes three stages, namely data reduction, data grouping (condensation), and drawing conclusions or verification. The results of this study indicate that there are significant challenges faced, such as the use of slang and foreign terms that can threaten the authenticity of the language. The opportunities that arise are also very large for the development and preservation of the Indonesian language, where language access becomes wider and the community has the opportunity to enrich vocabulary and improve Indonesian language literacy through various educational platforms.

Abstract

Reader response theory offers a dynamic approach to understanding literary interpretation, shifting focus from text-centered analysis to reader engagement. This study investigates reader responses to Diana Wynne Jones's "Howl's Moving Castle" through an analysis of reviews on Goodreads, utilizing Beach's framework of reader-response theory. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research collected 60 reader comments, systematically sampling one review per month over the past year. The analysis categorized responses across five dimensions: textual, experiential, psychological, social, and cultural, revealing that experiential responses (33.33%) and textual responses (27.08%) predominated. Additionally, the study examined reader engagement across cognitive (50%), emotional (36.4%), and behavioral (13.6%) dimensions. Findings demonstrate how online reading communities like Goodreads transform literary interpretation from a solitary to a collaborative experience, highlighting the complex ways readers interact with literary texts. By exploring the nuanced responses to "Howl's Moving Castle," this research contributes to our understanding of contemporary reading practices, critical thinking literacy, and the evolving landscape of digital literary engagement.
