Abstract

Pronunciation in a second language (L2) is often influenced by the first language (L1), which can hinder intelligibility. Indonesian speakers struggle with certain English sounds, such as /θ/ and /ð/, due to their absence in the L1 phonetic system. To identify the influence of L1 on L2 pronunciation in the context of English language learning in Indonesia and propose strategies to reduce negative transfer effects. This qualitative study used a case study approach, involving 9 students from an English club at XYZ School. A pronunciation test was conducted to measure phonetic transfer between L1 and L2. Results show that L1 phonetic transfer causes errors in specific phonemes. Words with higher phonetic complexity are more challenging to pronounce correctly. Negative phonetic transfer and a lack of prosodic training were identified as major obstacles. Context-based and intensive phonetic training significantly improves pronunciation skills. L2 pronunciation errors are strongly influenced by L1, phonetic complexity, and individual experience. Contextual learning and individualized approaches positively impact pronunciation improvement.

Abstract

Technology is essential to the efficient teaching and learning process. But technological advancement does not ensure that everyone can take full use of it. Acquiring technical literacy or knowing how to utilize it involves more than just learning how to read; it also involves being able to use, access, and integrate technology into the teaching and learning process. Although a lot of people use the internet, not everyone is able to fully utilize its benefits, particularly in the field of education. Learning can be done more quickly and in a number of ways, particularly while learning English. In our nation, English is a foreign language, and students will have a lot of trouble using it. Therefore, in order to help students understand and avoid becoming disinterested in the process of learning English, teachers need to possess additional skills. As a result, providing the internet and educational websites as resources for learning English will benefit both educators and learners. While the use of the internet for educational purposes is not new in our nation, not all institutions are able to put it into practice because of a lack of necessary resources, including computer equipment and internet access.

Abstract

This study analyzed the use of deixis in the lyrics of Arctic Monkeys' AM album to understand its contribution to narrative meaning and emotional connection with listeners. The purpose of the study was to explore how linguistic elements, particularly deixis, function as pragmatic tools in popular music. Using Levinson's (1983) theory, the study identified five types of deixis: persona, spatial, temporal, social, and discourse. The analysis examined their functions in the pragmatic context of song lyrics. According to the rules, the results showed a dominant pattern of person deixis, which strengthened the emotional connection between the narrator and the listener. Additionally, temporal and spatial deixis enriched the narrative by emphasizing time and place contexts. These findings suggested that linguistic elements in song lyrics reinforced emotional and narrative experiences. This study concluded that deixis contributed significantly to enhancing listeners' emotional and narrative engagement, offering valuable insights into the use of language in creative media such as music and the broader study of pragmatics.

Abstract

The translation of idioms is one of the most challenging aspects of translation, as their meanings often differ from the literal interpretation of their components. This study analyses the translation of idioms in Adele's album 21 as translated by Tribunnews, focusing on the strategies employed using Mona Baker's (2011) translation theory. A total of 26 idioms were identified and examined to determine the methods used to adapt them into Indonesian. The results show that paraphrasing was the most frequently used strategy, applied to 13 idioms, followed by other strategies such as omission and using an idiom with similar meaning and form. The frequent use of paraphrasing indicates an effort to retain the meaning and emotional impact of the text while ensuring cultural relevance for the target audience. This research highlights the complexities of idiom translation in artistic works and contributes to a deeper understanding of idiom translation strategies in the media.

The result is known that student learning achievement in learning narrative texts in classes using story mapping techniques has increased significantly compared to classes without story map techniques. This statement is in accordance with data collection calculations by comparing the observation t value (to = 2.35) with the t table (tt = 2.00). It can be seen that to is higher than tt (to >tt). In conclusion, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.
