Abstract

Animation is generally used as a medium of entertainment. However, the Soviet Union used animation as a propaganda medium that combined the production of visual images, narration and sound to build enemy framing and lead public perception of the United States during the Cold War era. This research discusses the representation of the United States in the animated film Миллионер (The Millionaire) made by the Soviet Union as a form of propaganda. This article aims to show how the Soviet Union represented the United States as a negative things in an effort to carry out propaganda. Stuart Hall’s representational theory suggests that meaning is produced by language. Based on the presentation of the representation of the United States in the animation Миллионер (The Millionaire) it is known that the animation has a role as a propaganda tool for the Soviet Union to criticize US imperialism and shape public opinion towards a more negative depiction of America. The United States is portrayed as a country of antagonistic, capitalist, industrialist, careless and greedy bourgeoisie. AbstrakAnimasi secara umum digunakan sebagai media hiburan. Akan tetapi, Uni Soviet menggunakan animasi sebagai media propaganda yang memadukan produksi citra visual, narasi, dan suara untuk membangun framing musuh dan menggiring persepsi publik terhadap Amerika Serikat pada era Perang Dingin. Penelitian ini membahas representasi Amerika Serikat dalam film animasi Миллионер (Millioner) yang dibuat oleh Uni Soviet sebagai bentuk propaganda. Artikel ini bertujuan menunjukkan cara Uni Soviet merepresentasikan Amerika Serikat sebagai hal yang negatif dalam upaya melakukan propaganda. Teori representasi Stuart Hall menunjukkan bahwa makna diproduksi oleh bahasa. Berdasarkan pemaparan representasi Amerika Serikat dalam animasi Миллионер (Millioner) diketahui bahwa animasi tersebut memiliki peran sebagai alat propaganda Uni Soviet untuk mengkritik imperialisme Amerika Serikat dan membentuk opini publik terhadap penggambaran Amerika ke arah yang lebih negatif. Amerika Serikat digambarkan sebagai negara kaum borjuis yang antagonis, kapitalis, industrialis, ceroboh, dan serakah.

Abstract

Comparative Literature as an approach remains an issue that raises some questions since the term itself is rather abstract. Marc Bloch stated the establishment of the term Comparative Literature itself that a new self-awareness – la prise de conscience – was born. Such awareness resulted from the evolution of local languages and ways of thinking in response to geopolitical changes (Jost 1974), a new curiosity to find out what is different and what is similar among literary texts, and why they are different despite their common origin. Therefore, comparative literary studies is close to the studies of world literature inasmuch as they often compare one particular aspect or more of literary works coming from different cultures and expressed in different languages. In foreign languages, the term Comparative Literature generally refers to the same meaning, but in German, vergleichende Literaturewissenschaft (Pichois Rousseay 1967: 12) underlines the disciplines’ scientific action on account of its methods. In this article, the focus discussion is on the mimetic aspect, that is, how reality is revealed through literature, especially on the thematic and methodical levels, in novels that are categorized as realistic works based on the assumption that realism in literature emerged as consequence of the growth of capitalism (Lukacs 1972) in France, Britain, and Indonesia. As long as there is cross-cultural human communication. Abstract

There is a hope that we need more works of art dealing with cities. Citiness has enchanted as well as confused the people in the vortex of modernization. Citiness has attacked our consciousness stronger than ever before since everything changes so quickly either in the city or outside the city, both at the national or global level. Globalization has accelerated the transmissions of not only products and services, but also images and representations, which can step across the border as they like without symmetry. The hope shows at least three things. First, there is a need for contemplating citiness which has gone deep into our contemporary consciousness. Second, there is a confession that city and city life are supposed to be productive inspirations for arts. Third, arts have an important role in crystallizing the experience and contemplation of city life. However, cities have an ever changing form. Modernization, which have brought along industrialization and urbanization, has basically changed cities since the 18th century, which continues until now. Cities in developing countries seem to always develop, and become elusive, running faster than the speed that their inhabitants can bear, and often in unpredictable moves. The urgency of contemplating citiness is getting higher, for next year, for the first time, half of the people in the world will live in cities or in a city-like conditions. The experience of city life will become the experience of future human beings.

Abstract

Penyerangan terhadap suatu suku bangsa menimbulkan konflik dan perlawanan. Semangat untuk membela bangsa muncul karena kepedulian terhadap kepentingan bangsa. Heroisme membangkitkan rasa percaya diri untuk maju membela kebenaran. Hal ini digambarkan dalam tokoh utama Тарас Бульба/Taras Bulba dan Хаджи Мурат/Hadji Murat. Kedua cerita pendek ditulis oleh pengarang-pengarang besar Rusia yang menampilkan tokoh utama mereka sebagai sosok berani dan cerdas. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif analisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan intrinsik dan ekstrinsik. Teori tokoh dan penokohan serta sosiologi sastra digunakan untuk menganalisis. Pengenalan bangsa Indonesia terhadap karya-karya sastra Rusia dirasa masih kurang, sehingga penelitian tentang ini penting dilakukan agar lebih dikenal luas di Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract Poetry as one of the ancient Indonesian literary heritage is a discourse that holds noble teachings and culture that do not fade with the times. Discussing things related to the culture of the community, the anthropological approach is used. This study aims to describe the representation of Minangkabau culture from Syair Sidi Djamadi. The method used is content analysis method. The data of this research are aspects of religiosity as a form of cultural representation in Syair Sidi Djamadi. Syair Sidi Djamadi has 761 verses. Each stanza consists of four lines. The total number of the verses is 3044 lines. Syair Sidi Djamadi in general contains about faith, piety and piety. The data were collected by transliteration, data inventory, then analysis and interpretation were carried out, and the final step was the conclusion. The results of this study indicate that the traditional Minangkabau representation is religiosity in Sidi Djamadi's poetry, the teachings of carrying out shahada, prayer, haj, zakat, fasting, studying, learning the Koran. The dimensions of religiosity are presented as teachings that have a collective view of the Minangkabau community and are applied together as community culture. AbstrakSyair sebagai salah satu warisan sastra Indonesia kuno merupakan wacana yang menyimpan ajaran dan budaya luhur yang tidak luntur seiring perkembangan zaman. Membahas hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan budaya masyarakat, digunakan pendekatan antropologi sastra. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan representasi budaya Minangkabau dari Syair Sidi Djamadi. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode analisis isi. Data penelitian ini berupa aspek religiusitas sebagai wujud representasi budaya dalam Syair Sidi Djamadi. Syair Sidi Djamadi memiliki 761 sajak. Setiap bait terdiri dari empat baris. Jumlah ayat adalah 3044 baris. Syair Sidi Djamadi secara umum berisi tentang keimanan, takwa dan takwa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan transliterasi, inventarisasi data, kemudian dilakukan analisis dan interpretasi, dan langkah terakhir adalah penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa representasi adat Minangkabau adalah religiusitas dalam puisi Sidi Djamadi, ajaran melaksanakan syahadat, salat, haji, zakat, puasa, belajar, belajar mengaji. Dimensi religiusitas dihadirkan sebagai ajaran yang memiliki pandangan kolektif masyarakat Minangkabau dan diaplikasikan bersama sebagai budaya masyarakat.

Abstract

The oral literary tradition that has developed in various areas in the Indonesian archipelago is a heritage that gives specific colors to Indonesian literature. The rapid development of science during this global era, especially in electronic media, has given significant influences to the change of social behavior and culture. In the midst of confusions and restlessness in the search for meaning and identities, it may be a good idea to look back and interpret the literary work: from various parts of the archipelago, especially those which were once only delivered orally, such as folktales, legends, ballads or myths These works, like classic works, contain various socio-cultural values that play important roles in actuaiizng the nation's identity and in strengthening the spirit of nationaitsm brotherhood and interaction with the surrounding nature.

Abstract

This study described the personalities of female characters within three novels with Acehnese conflict as theme that was based on the Sigmund Freud psychoanalytical perspective. The data resources encompassed three novels: Tunggu Aku di Ulegle, Seulanga, and Bidadari Hitam. Qualitative approach was used as the study on psychological aspect of literature. The result indicated several matters. In the novel of Tunggu Aku di Ulegle, ego could not control the desire of id, which was too strong for Fatma, Hamidah, and Umi. Fatma and Umi at last regretted all of their actions (superego). Then, in the novel of Seulanga, ego successfully controlled id that prevented regret by the character (superego). Upon the character of Cadine, ego took the correct act, which referred to the action of arranging strategies to achieve the objectives of id. However, ego did not performed the action in accordance of the principles set by superego, which made her regretted at last (superego). Then, upon the character of Sadina, ego could not control the quite strong id, which made ego committed aggressive actions in accordance to the principles of id. Even so, Sadina regretted her actions. Finally, in the novel of Bidadari Hitam, the character of Inong acted as her desire, which was impulsive and amoral. Nevertheless, she regretted her actions (superego). On the other hand, upon the characters of Fitriah and Mak Santan, ego could control the desire of id quite well. Furthermore, ego also acted in appropriate to the principles of superego.

Abstract

Even though the Indonesian Language and Cultural Studies opened officially only in 1964, the tradition of studying Indonesia in general has long been an exotic 'hobby' for many Italians. Since a long time ago everything related with the 'Malay world' has been considered attractive. We are not only talking about the 20th century, but long before that. We should go back to the time the Italian explorers had their journeys in the Indonesian archipelago. The history of Italian exploration proves that the archipelago is not new to Italy. In their explorations, they showed their interests in local cultures, including language and traditional works of literature such as pantun. The vocabulary ist of A. Pigafetta (1512) is considered as the first dictionary' of Malay language in the western world. While E. Modigliani, in his time, already discussed about the Malay traditional poetry, pantun. In contrast to that, unfortunately, nowadays only a few contemporary works of Indonesian literature have bcen translated to Italian, three novels and some poems. The main reason for this is the fact that finding a publisher who is willing to publish such translations is not easy.

Abstract

When it comes to on-screen depictions, oftentimes religion and horror are placed at opposing sides. Religion in film is the antithesis of horror, rarely does it venture into the concept of religion itself as the source. Netflix's Midnight Mass (2021) by Mike Flanagan explores this topic in a deeper yet subtle manner. Since the series was released less than two years before this article was written, most of the articles found are focused on the cinematic aspect and the performance of actors. This article examines the use of overt religiousness to push forward the horror narrative, particularly the interchangeable nature of angels and vampires. By using textual analysis as a method, the writer concludes that horror can only be recontextualized into a holy perspective because religion is the origin of said horror.AbstrakDalam perfilman, agama dan horor seringkali di tempatkan di sisi yang berlawanan. Agama dalam film merupakan antitesis dari horor, terdapat sedikit film horor yang menggunakan konsep agama sebagai sumber dari teror. Acara Netflix Midnight Mass (2021) oleh Mike Flanagan mengeksplorasi topik ini dengan cara yang lebih dalam namun halus. karena acara tersebut dirilis kurang dari dua tahun sebelum naskah ini ditulis, sebagian besar naskah yang ditemukan berfokus pada aspek sinematik dan penampilan para aktor. Jurnal ini mengkaji penggunaan religiusitas yang terang-terangan untuk mendorong narasi horor, khususnya karakteristik-karakteristik malaikat dan vampir yang dapat disamakan. Dengan menggunakan metode analisis tekstual, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa horor hanya dapat di kontekstualisasi ulang menjadi perspektif suci karena agama itu sendiri yang menjadi sumber horor tersebut.

Abstract

Human challenges in living life are often used as a description of the personality or psychology of the characters in the story. Psychological conditions greatly affect the character's ability to be resilient. This study aims to describe the aspects of supporting resilience that are carried out by the character Diane to get out of her slump. The subject of this research is the main character, Diane, and the research object studied is the aspect of supporting resilience by the character Diane in the novel Les Gens Heureux Lisent et Boivent du Café by Agnès Martin-Lugand. The research method used is descriptive-qualitative method with a literary psychology approach. The results of this study indicate that the aspects of resilience that support Diane's character to find her happiness again can be seen from seven aspects, namely emotion regulation, impulse control, optimism, causal analysis, empathy, self-efficacy, and achievement. Diane's causal analysis ability is the most supportive in the process of carrying out resilience. Therefore, these aspects of resilience allowed Diane to process very well in identifying the problems she was facing so that she was able to get out of her slump. AbstrakTantangan manusia dalam menjalani kehidupan sering dijadikan sebagai gambaran kepribadian atau kejiwaan tokoh dalam cerita. Kondisi kejiwaan sangat mempengaruhi kemampuan tokoh dalam beresiliensi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan aspek-aspek pendukung resiliensi yang dilakukan tokoh Diane untuk keluar dari keterpurukannya. Subjek penelitian ini adalah tokoh utama yaitu Diane dan objek penelitian yang dikaji adalah aspek pendukung resiliensi yang dilakukan tokoh Diane dalam roman Les Gens Heureux Lisent et Boivent du Café karya Agnès Martin-Lugand. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif-kualitatif dengan pendekatan psikologi sastra. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa aspek resiliensi yang mendukung tokoh Diane untuk menemukan kebahagiaannya kembali terlihat dari tujuh aspek yaitu regulasi emosi, pengendalian impuls, optimis, analisis kausal, empati, efikasi diri, dan pencapaian. Kemampuan analisis kausal yang dimiliki Diane paling mendukung dalam proses melakukan resiliensi. Oleh karena itu, aspek-aspek resiliensi tersebut membuat Diane dapat berproses mengidentifikasi permasalahan yang dihadapi dengan sangat baik sehingga mampu keluar dari keterpurukan.
