Abstract

Acute pain is a common complaint following surgery in patients with femur fractures and can hinder recovery if not managed effectively. This study aimed to describe the application of Benson’s relaxation therapy in reducing pain after Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) for femur fracture. A nursing care case study was conducted on Mrs. S, an 82-year-old woman, in the Central Operating Theatre of Labuang Baji General Hospital, Makassar. Assessment was performed in the post-anesthesia care unit, followed by the identification of the nursing diagnosis Acute Pain (D.0077), intervention using Benson’s relaxation therapy combined with collaborative pharmacological analgesia (ketorolac), implementation, and one-hour evaluation. Results showed a reduction in pain intensity from a score of 6 to 4 on the Numeric Rating Scale, a change in pain pattern from continuous to intermittent, and improved vital signs along with decreased behavioral indicators of pain (grimacing, restlessness, and protective posture). These findings indicate that Benson’s relaxation therapy is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for managing acute postoperative pain, consistent with theoretical evidence that this technique reduces pain perception through muscle relaxation, deep breathing, and reinforcement of spiritual beliefs.

Abstract

Nutritional problems among adolescent girls remain relatively high and can affect reproductive health, particularly before entering marriage. One of the factors suspected to be associated with nutritional status is the frequency of visits to adolescent health posts (Posyandu Remaja). This study aimed to determine the relationship between the frequency of visits to adolescent health posts and the nutritional status of adolescent girls in the working area of Dinoyo Public Health Center. The research design employed was correlational analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 80 adolescent girls registered at adolescent health posts in the Dinoyo Public Health Center area, selected using total sampling technique. Data were collected using observation sheets and analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between the frequency of visits to adolescent health posts and the nutritional status of adolescent girls (r = -0.083, p = 0.462). It can be concluded that an increased frequency of visits to adolescent health posts does not directly correlate with improvements in the nutritional status of adolescent girls in the Dinoyo Public Health Center area.

Abstract

Pregnancy is frequently associated with discomforts such as back pain, edema, and postural changes that may interfere with daily activities. Approximately 50–70% of pregnant women experience back pain due to hormonal changes and increased body weight. The use of a Birth Ball is considered one of the non-pharmacological alternatives to alleviate these complaints, as it improves pelvic muscle flexibility and supports postural correction. Proper education is essential to ensure appropriate and effective utilization. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of education using lecture and demonstration methods on the understanding of Birth Ball use among pregnant women. A pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test post-test approach was applied. The sample consisted of 28 third-trimester pregnant women selected through purposive sampling. Findings revealed that the respondents’ understanding prior to education was 0%, which significantly increased to 96.43% following the intervention. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielded Z = -4.873 with p < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between pre- and post-education. It can be concluded that education delivered through lecture and demonstration methods is effective in enhancing pregnant women’s understanding of Birth Ball use.

Abstract

Asphyxia is a condition in which a baby fails to breathe spontaneously and regularly immediately after birth, preventing oxygen intake and carbonic acid removal (Dewi, 2011). It is a pathological change caused by insufficient oxygen in the respiratory air, leading to hypoxia and hypercapnia (Ridha, 2014). Asphyxia can occur at birth (primary asphyxia) or develop later (secondary asphyxia). This study aims to identify factors influencing neonatal asphyxia at the Pagar Merbau Health Center, Deli Serdang Regency, in 2023. The research employs an analytical method with a cross-sectional approach. Data analysis utilized the chi-square statistical test and Fisher’s Exact Test in SPSS to determine the relationship between independent and dependent variables. Results from bivariate analysis using Fisher's Exact Test revealed a p-value of 0.344, indicating no statistically significant relationship between maternal age and neonatal asphyxia at the Pagar Merbau Health Center in 2023. To reduce neonatal asphyxia risk, pregnant women should undergo regular antenatal care using available health facilities to detect complications such as premature birth (<37 weeks), postmature birth (>42 weeks), low birth weight, or premature rupture of membranes. Early detection and appropriate medical intervention can minimize neonatal asphyxia incidence. Healthcare providers must enhance prenatal education and monitoring programs to ensure better maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Strengthening healthcare services and raising awareness among pregnant women about risk factors can contribute significantly to reducing neonatal asphyxia cases.

Abstract

Background: A Caesarean section (CS) is a birthing procedure performed by making an incision in the mother's abdominal wall and uterus to deliver the baby, usually performed when normal vaginal delivery is not possible due to medical indications for the mother or fetus, such as placenta previa, abnormal presentation or position of the fetus, and other conditions that pose a risk of medical complications that endanger the mother and fetus. At Arjawinangun Regional Hospital, 1,491 CS births were recorded in 2021. One of the problems that often occurs in post-Cesarean section patients is impaired physical mobility, which causes limitations in the ability to move independently. This disorder needs to be addressed immediately so as not to hinder the recovery process. To overcome this problem, early mobilization intervention is very important. Early mobilization is a way to help patients increase their physical activity after undergoing surgery. Objective: This study aims to determine the description of the implementation of early mobilization in Mrs. M with impaired physical mobility after Caesarean section in the Dewi Sartika room, Arjawinangun Regional Hospital, Cirebon Regency, and to assess its effectiveness in overcoming these impaired physical mobility. Implementation method: This study used a case study method with research subjects in the form of patients who experienced impaired physical mobility after Sectio Caesarea at RSUD Arjawinangun Cirebon Regency. The implementation process involved providing early mobilization instructions which included light movement exercises tailored to the patient's condition. Results: The results of the study showed that after the implementation of early mobilization, impaired physical mobility in patients after Sectio Caesarea could be resolved significantly. Patients showed increased ability to move, reduced pain, and accelerated the post-operative recovery process.

Abstract

The low level of knowledge and attitudes of mothers regarding the use of the KIA handbook is due to their suboptimal use. Many mothers view the KIA handbook as merely a record of routine checkups, thus failing to understand the information it contains. This study aims to identify factors influencing the utilization of the Maternal and Child Health (KIA) handbook among mothers with toddlers in the Kwala Bekala Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Medan, Johor, in 2025. The study used an observational analytical method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 45 mothers of toddlers living in the area. The sampling technique used was multistage sampling, conducted in stages to obtain appropriate respondents. The results showed that 62.2% of the utilization of the KIA handbook was influenced by mothers' attitudes, particularly regarding the implementation of the immunization program for pregnant women. The more positive the mother's attitude toward immunization, the greater the support of her husband's involvement in the process. The direction of the relationship found in this study was positive. Several factors that may influence mothers' attitudes toward the use of the KIA handbook include the number of children (the majority have one child (51.1%), the mother's education level (the highest is elementary school level at 19.42%), and the mother's occupation (the most common being a housewife at 30.66%). The use of the KIA handbook is classified as good at 62.2%, and the mother's attitude toward immunization during pregnancy shows a positive attitude at 75.6%.

Abstract

Uric acid is a byproduct of purine breakdown, which is a component found in DNA and food. Purine is broken down into uric acid in the body, and if not excreted properly, it can lead to the accumulation of uric acid in the blood, known as hyperuricemia. If left untreated, this condition can develop into gout, which is characterized by joint pain and inflammation, particularly in the foot joints. In addition to medical treatment through medications, uric acid levels can also be naturally reduced through the consumption of certain foods, one of which is pineapple juice. Pineapple juice is known to have beneficial properties in reducing uric acid levels. Pineapple contains vitamin C, flavonoids, and bromelain. Vitamin C plays an important role in increasing the excretion of uric acid through urine, thereby helping to lower uric acid levels in the body. In addition, the flavonoids in pineapple act as antioxidants, inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is involved in the purine metabolism that produces uric acid. By inhibiting this enzyme, the process of uric acid formation can be reduced. Bromelain, a protease enzyme found in pineapple, also provides additional benefits. Bromelain helps accelerate the healing of swelling and joint pain caused by uric acid, as well as having anti-inflammatory effects that help reduce inflammation. This study was conducted using a case study method with a one-group pretest-posttest design to observe changes in uric acid levels in respondents after consuming pineapple juice. For 7 days, four respondents consumed 200 ml of pineapple juice per day. The results showed a reduction in uric acid levels in all four respondents, indicating that pineapple juice is effective as a supportive therapy in lowering uric acid levels. These findings suggest the potential of pineapple juice as a natural alternative to help manage uric acid levels.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnant women is a significant global public health issue, with a prevalence of 35.5% in 2023, according to the Global Anemia Estimates 2025 from the World Health Organization (WHO). The prevalence of anemia among reproductive-aged women is 30.7%, while it is 30.5% in non-pregnant women. This indicates that anemia is more prevalent among pregnant women compared to the general female population, highlighting the need for greater attention to this health issue. This study aims to identify and evaluate the risk factors or causes of anemia in pregnant women using an observational analytical approach. The research design employed is cross-sectional, which allows for the observation of the relationship between maternal knowledge about anemia and the occurrence of anemia in pregnant women at the same point in time. The study population consists of all pregnant women who visit the community health center (Puskesmas) for checkups. The results indicate that there is no significant relationship between parity (number of previous births) and the occurrence of anemia in pregnant women, with an Odds Ratio (OR) of 1.58. This means that women with higher parity are 1.58 times more likely to experience anemia compared to women with lower parity. However, the study found a significant relationship between maternal knowledge about anemia and the occurrence of anemia in pregnant women. Mothers with better knowledge about anemia are less likely to experience it. This study is expected to provide important information about the importance of improving maternal knowledge regarding anemia, which can contribute to the prevention and control of anemia in pregnant women. By enhancing maternal knowledge, it is hoped that the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women can be reduced, improving the overall health of both mothers and their unborn children.

Abstract

Ischemic stroke occurs when a thrombus, embolus, or vascular stenosis disrupts blood supply to the brain, causing vessel rupture and blood leakage into the surrounding neuronal space. A common clinical symptom of stroke is hemiparesis, or muscle weakness on one side of the body. Non-pharmacological management, such as range of motion exercises using mirror therapy, can support rehabilitation. Mirror therapy is a form of motor rehabilitation that engages the patient's motor imagery. The mirror provides visual stimulation to the brain, particularly the cerebral motor nerves on both the affected and unaffected sides, to assist movement in limbs experiencing hemiparesis. This study used a case study method, implementing nursing care and evidence-based nursing practice. Over six consecutive days of intervention, mirror therapy led to increased muscle strength. Prior to the therapy, muscle strength was recorded at. After the therapy, muscle strength improved to. These results suggest that mirror therapy can serve as an effective rehabilitation strategy to address impaired physical mobility in patients with ischemic stroke.
