Abstract

This study aims to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic elements of the novel Bidadari Bermata Bening written by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. The novel presents themes of a Muslim woman’s dignity and obstructed love, with the main character Ayna portrayed as a principled and resilient figure. The intrinsic elements analyzed include theme, characters and characterization, setting, plot, point of view, moral message, and language style. Meanwhile, the extrinsic elements cover the author’s biography, psychological background, social and cultural environment, as well as the values and philosophies reflected in the work. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method with a structural approach, aiming to thoroughly explore the narrative structure and embedded messages. The findings reveal that both intrinsic and extrinsic elements contribute cohesively to the novel’s overall meaning, reinforcing the religious and moral characteristics that are distinctive of El Shirazy’s literary style. The novel not only presents a narrative of love and struggle but also serves as a medium of Islamic da'wah that touches readers’ spiritual and social awareness.

Abstract

Trauma is a psychological response rooted in the subconscious and shaped by past experiences, often intensified by social influences. This study explores how Talk to Me (2022) portrays trauma through the lens of Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory, focusing on the concepts of the Real, desire, and object a. The film presents possession as a metaphor for psychological fragmentation, with the protagonist Mia’s unresolved grief leading to obsession, identity collapse, and emotional deterioration. The embalmed hand symbolizes object a, an unattainable object of desire, while Mia’s pursuit of connection with her deceased mother triggers a confrontation with the Real, exposing the raw terror of psychic disintegration. Using qualitative methods, this study analyzes the film’s narrative and symbolism through observation, film analysis, and supporting academic sources. Findings reveal that Talk to Me reimagines possession as a reenactment of trauma, where each encounter intensifies inner voids. Ultimately, the film suggests that closure from trauma may not emerge through reunion, but through self-sacrifice and painful acceptance.

Abstract

Initial observations conducted by researchers found that the Sundanese speaking skills of children at Ibnu Abbas Preschool were not yet fluent, and they also showed little interest and knowledge about Sundanese traditions and culture. Many children did not understand Sundanese well. They lacked vocabulary and were not fluent in Sundanese. Therefore, early childhood requires familiarization and guidance from adults to provide the necessary knowledge for their future, enabling them to use Sundanese to communicate with their parents, community, and friends. Based on these findings, researchers wanted to improve Sundanese speaking skills through the ngadongeng method. This study used a Classroom Action Research method with two cycles of action. During the initial observation, the children's Sundanese speaking ability was only 33.14%. Then, there was an increase of 17% to 50%. After the intervention in the second cycle, the improvement in speaking ability optimally increased to 78.85%. There were obstacles encountered in the implementation of storytelling techniques, namely, the teacher's lack of thoroughness in selecting the title and characters of the stories being read, thus not capturing children's attention. Furthermore, the teacher also lacked interaction and explanation during each story telling, using language that children may not have heard often, resulting in children not understanding the content of the story. However, these obstacles were resolved, and in the implementation of cycle II, these obstacles were eliminated. Therefore, the storytelling method used by the researcher was able to improve Sundanese speaking skills in children at Ibnu Abbas Early Childhood Education (PAUD).

Abstract

This research analyzes the representation of the capitalist structure and the dynamics of class struggle within its system through a study of the film Emilia Perez (2024), utilizing the perspective of Marxism. The method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach based on Marxist critique. Data is collected from the characters dialogue, scenes, and visual representations, which showcase the conflict inherent in the capitalist environment. The analysis focuses on a critique of illicit activities within the capitalist setting and the struggle experienced by the social classes involved. The research verifies that the film strongly reflects that class contradiction within capitalism between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Furthermore, the film supports the Marxist analysis that the capitalist system maximizes absolute surplus value by employing economic power to modify legal frameworks. This demonstrates that the interest in capital accumulation becomes the primary objective, surpassing moral and legal boundaries.

Abstract

This research examines how futuristic technology influences human identity and ethics in the movie Mickey 17 (2025) through Robert Pepperell’s posthumanism theory. The story follows Mickey Barnes, an “Expendable,” a cloned human whose body is continuously reprinted and whose memories are digitally stored. This condition raises fundamental questions about individuality, humanity, and the value of life. The study aims to identify the futuristic technologies shown in the movie and analyze their impacts on human existence. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis focuses on key scenes and dialogues, supported by books, journals, and previous research on posthumanism and science fiction. The findings reveal that technologies such as the reprinting machine, memory hard drive, bioreactor, cell bioreactor, space suit, spaceship, and translator device function as tools for human survival but also blur the line between humans and machines. These technologies generate new ethical issues, particularly for cloned characters like Mickey, who face identity loss, dehumanization, and commodification. The study concludes that Mickey 17 portrays a posthuman future in which technology strengthens human abilities but simultaneously threatens human dignity. The movie invites viewers to rethink life, individuality, and moral responsibility in a world shaped by powerful technological advancements.

Abstract

Reading is a cognitive process that involves understanding, retelling, and interpreting the meaning of written symbols. Beginning reading is the initial stage of learning to read, which can be developed through engaging activities involving letters, syllables, and simple words. This study was conducted to investigate the beginning reading skills of first-grade students at SD Negeri 073 Jambur Padang Matinggi, to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors, and to explore the efforts made to improve students’ reading abilities. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with 16 students as subjects. Data were collected through observation and interviews with both teachers and students. The results showed that students’ beginning reading skills varied: 6 students were categorized as good, 6 as fair, and 4 as poor. The influencing factors were divided into internal and external aspects. Internal factors included a lack of interest and motivation to read, while external factors involved the school environment, family support, and learning strategies. Efforts to enhance reading skills included daily reading habits and consistent parental guidance. These findings highlight the importance of both internal and external support systems in the development of early reading skills among young learners.

Abstract

This research analyzes how disciplinary power is represented through the character of Paul Atreides in the film Dune (2021) by drawing on Michel Foucault's theory of disciplinary power. As a political science fiction film, Dune (2021) depicts Paul's journey as the heir to House Atreides, who has been under strict supervision, training, and rules since his birth. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze scenes, dialogue, and visuals that demonstrate disciplinary practices such as surveillance, normalizing judgment, examinations, training of the body, habit formation, and internalization. The results show that power in Dune (2021) does not operate oppressively, but rather subtly through disciplinary mechanisms that shape Paul's behavior, identity, and self-awareness. This process transforms Paul from a young man under surveillance into someone who manages himself and is ready to become a leader. Overall, this research concludes that power in Dune (2021) plays a significant role in shaping Paul Atreides' identity through six mechanisms of disciplinary power.

Abstract

The film Atlas (2024) presents anxiety about the development of artificial intelligence through the psychological conflict of its main character. This study discusses the issue of trauma and fear of Artificial Intelligence (AI) experienced by Atlas Shepherd due to a traumatic experience in the past. The main objective of this study is to identify the types of defense mechanisms used by Atlas Shepherd and also explain how these mechanisms help Atlas face trauma and fear of AI. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a psychoanalytic approach based on Anna Freud's theory. Data were obtained from dialogues, scenes, and actions of the main character in the film Atlas (2024) that show psychological conflicts and emotional responses. The results show that Atlas Shepherd uses four main defense mechanisms: denial, repression, projection, and rationalization. Denial is the most dominant mechanism, followed by other mechanisms, which function as psychological strategies to reduce anxiety and protect oneself from emotional distress. These findings confirm the relevance of psychoanalytic theory in understanding psychological conflicts in contemporary science fiction films.

Abstract

This research examines the representation of power relations and class conflict in the film Bullet Train (2022) directed by David Leitch by applying a Marxist perspective. The purposes of this research are to analyze how power is portrayed among the characters and to identify how class conflict is represented in the film. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data are collected from scenes, dialogues, character actions, and visual elements in the film. The data are analyzed using Marxist theory, particularly concepts of bourgeoisie and proletariat, exploitation, hegemony, alienation, and class struggle. The results of this research show that power in Bullet Train is dominated by characters who control capital and organizational structures, particularly the White Death, who represents the bourgeois class. Meanwhile, characters such as Ladybug and other assassins represent the proletariat who sell their labor and operate under systems they do not control. Class conflict is represented through fragmented and individualized struggles among the working-class characters, where competition replaces solidarity. The train functions as a metaphor for capitalist society, symbolizing confinement, hierarchy, and continuous conflict driven by capital. This research concludes that Bullet Train is not only an action-comedy film, but also a cultural text that reflects capitalist power structures and ongoing class conflict in contemporary society.
