Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This research explores the psychological conflict experienced by the main character, M, in the Thai film How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024). This study uses Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory, specifically the concepts of id, ego, and superego, to analyze M's inner transformation. At the beginning of the story, M is driven by a personal desire to inherit from his grandmother. However, as time goes by, he experiences emotional changes that make him face an inner conflict between his ambition and his growing moral awareness, as well as an increasingly strong emotional bond. The cultural value of filial piety in Thai society plays an important role in this process, as it helps shape M's moral awareness and the development of his superego structure. Using qualitative descriptive methods, this study identifies how M's psychological conflict is reflected through his actions, expressions, and developing relationship with his grandmother. The results show that the character's internal conflict undergoes a transition from id to the ego, followed by superego, which is influenced by cultural values. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of character development in Southeast Asian cinema by combining Freud's psychoanalytic theory with the local moral framework of filial piety values.

Abstract

This research explores the existentialist feminist representation of women in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), focusing on their struggle to reclaim subjectivity and resist patriarchal domination. Grounded in Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism, the research analyzes how female characters navigate a dystopian world controlled by male authority. Core concepts such as the Other, immanence, transcendence, freedom, and responsibility are used to interpret the journey of women from oppression to empowerment. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, analyzing selected scenes, character development, dialogues, and cinematic techniques. While Furiosa is the central figure, the analysis also includes secondary female characters such as Mary Jabassa, Norton, and the Wives. The findings show that women are frequently treated as commodities or silenced objects, as depicted through scenes of confinement, trade, and suppression. However, the film also portrays acts of resistance, where women assert their agency through courage, strategy, and solidarity. Furiosa’s transformation from being objectified as “the Other” to achieving autonomy through transcendence, exemplifies the existential journey toward subjectivity. This research concludes that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga challenges traditional gender norms in the action and science fiction genres, offering a meaningful contribution to feminist film criticism and existentialist feminist analysis.

Abstract

Trauma is a psychological response rooted in the subconscious and shaped by past experiences, often intensified by social influences. This study explores how Talk to Me (2022) portrays trauma through the lens of Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory, focusing on the concepts of the Real, desire, and object a. The film presents possession as a metaphor for psychological fragmentation, with the protagonist Mia’s unresolved grief leading to obsession, identity collapse, and emotional deterioration. The embalmed hand symbolizes object a, an unattainable object of desire, while Mia’s pursuit of connection with her deceased mother triggers a confrontation with the Real, exposing the raw terror of psychic disintegration. Using qualitative methods, this study analyzes the film’s narrative and symbolism through observation, film analysis, and supporting academic sources. Findings reveal that Talk to Me reimagines possession as a reenactment of trauma, where each encounter intensifies inner voids. Ultimately, the film suggests that closure from trauma may not emerge through reunion, but through self-sacrifice and painful acceptance.

Abstract

This research analyzes how disciplinary power is represented through the character of Paul Atreides in the film Dune (2021) by drawing on Michel Foucault's theory of disciplinary power. As a political science fiction film, Dune (2021) depicts Paul's journey as the heir to House Atreides, who has been under strict supervision, training, and rules since his birth. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze scenes, dialogue, and visuals that demonstrate disciplinary practices such as surveillance, normalizing judgment, examinations, training of the body, habit formation, and internalization. The results show that power in Dune (2021) does not operate oppressively, but rather subtly through disciplinary mechanisms that shape Paul's behavior, identity, and self-awareness. This process transforms Paul from a young man under surveillance into someone who manages himself and is ready to become a leader. Overall, this research concludes that power in Dune (2021) plays a significant role in shaping Paul Atreides' identity through six mechanisms of disciplinary power.

Abstract

The film Atlas (2024) presents anxiety about the development of artificial intelligence through the psychological conflict of its main character. This study discusses the issue of trauma and fear of Artificial Intelligence (AI) experienced by Atlas Shepherd due to a traumatic experience in the past. The main objective of this study is to identify the types of defense mechanisms used by Atlas Shepherd and also explain how these mechanisms help Atlas face trauma and fear of AI. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a psychoanalytic approach based on Anna Freud's theory. Data were obtained from dialogues, scenes, and actions of the main character in the film Atlas (2024) that show psychological conflicts and emotional responses. The results show that Atlas Shepherd uses four main defense mechanisms: denial, repression, projection, and rationalization. Denial is the most dominant mechanism, followed by other mechanisms, which function as psychological strategies to reduce anxiety and protect oneself from emotional distress. These findings confirm the relevance of psychoanalytic theory in understanding psychological conflicts in contemporary science fiction films.
