International Journal Linguistics of Sumatra and Malay is an international forum for leading research on language and society. It is open to both established and innovative approaches to sociolinguistic research. The Journal promotes all linguistic branches as a thoroughly linguistic and thoroughly social-scientific endeavor. The linguistic and the social are both expected to be present in all contributions. Language is regarded as not only a reflection of society but as itself constituting much of the character of social life. The Journal promotes the building and critique of various linguistic theories and encourages the application of social theory to linguistic issues. The Journal is hospitable to linguistic analyses ranging from the micro to the macro, from the quantitative study of phonological variables to discourse analysis of texts. It is open to data from a wide range of languages and international contexts. Contributions from the ethnographic, variationist, constructivist, and sociology of language traditions are welcomed, as are papers from the social psychology of language, anthropological linguistics, discourse analysis, language and gender studies, pragmatics, and conversational analysis.

Abstract

There are many words that rather clearly denote emotions, such as the nouns anger, happiness, and sadness. However, some cases are not so clear. For example, if a person feels relaxed, the adjective can refer to a physiological as well as an emotional state. It may be even more difficult to decide if a word such as the noun fun or the adjective warm refers to an emotional state. In this paper, I will discuss a list of 86 words that I collected while annotating a set of British English texts. They consisted of people’s fond memories of the music of digital games, and I aimed to mark all words that referred to emotions. I made notes of words that I was uncertain about. Here, those words are considered in the light of two dictionaries, the Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, and the Oxford English Dictionary online.

Abstract

Academics are always interested in debating the study of emotions across cultures and languages. This is due to the diverse ways that emotions can be expressed in different contexts and situations in each language and culture. This article aims to discuss the meaning of Balinese Lexicons dealing with emotions. The theory applied is Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) with two at once approaches, namely mapping and explication. The results showed that there is something good happened, represented by the lexicons: demen, kendel, and lédang, and something bad happened: sebet, inguh, and gedeg. The most interesting findings are the lexicon angob ‘surprise’ having semantic feature of something good might happen and ngon ‘surprise’ due to the something bad might happen. This can be inferred that there is an in-between position, not something good nor bad happened in the concerned Balinese emotion lexicons.

Abstract

The representation of women by the entertainment media as well as in the real world is always described as very typical, one of them is that they can only carry out limited professions and activities. So that the existence of women is not represented proportionally. Based on this, the study aims to describe the signs of women's gender discrimination and equality. This study used the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes which describes the forms of denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and myths contained in the Baseball Girl movie. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with listening and note-taking techniques. The results found in the Baseball girl movie are as follows: (1) the meaning of denotation in this study described the gender discrimination of women who are considered weak by the coach or the professional baseball recruiting team in participating in the trials towards the professional baseball team. (2) The connotative meaning found in this film shows four forms of gender discrimination, namely marginalization, stereotype, subordination, and violence. (3) The myth that can be concluded in this study is that there is a culture that is believed by the coach, the professional baseball team recruiter, and the mother of the main female character in this film who considers women physically weaker than men.

Abstract

Newspaper advertising experienced a significant increase in the 1970s. During that period, three local daily newspapers were established in Medan, namely: Waspada, Sinar Indonesia Baru, and dan Analisa. These newspapers displayed various advertisements in their publications; one of which was the advertisement to promote the film that would be shown in theaters at that time. In promoting films through these advertisements, many producers women as a means of promotion. Women seemed to have their magnet to attract the audience's interest. This journal explains how the women’s representation in the local daily newspaper advertisements in Medan in the 1970s, and how the exploitation of women’s bodies and sexual attractiveness in the advertisements for the promotion of the film was related to global discourse, especially in terms of women's appearance. The four stages of historical methods are applied to conduct the research, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the research show that advertising producers often showcased pictures of beautiful and sexy women and even displayed vulgar words to attract the audience's interest which didn’t represent the storyline of the film itself.

Abstract

The study of mixed marriages is always an interesting topic to talk about, especially regarding the topic which is the impact of inter-ethnic mixed marriages. This study aims to describe the phenomenon of mixed marriages associated with the maintenance of traditional language. This paper applies qualitative research on language maintenance by Javanese-Batak Toba Families in Medan. The research data were derived from observation, interviews, and audio-recorded family conversations, parents’ role at home is the most dominant factor in maintaining vernacular language in inter-ethnic families, and vernacular language maintenance in inter-ethnic families is succeeded by language use at home and activities at home and surroundings while Javanese-Batak Toba families are patriarchy. The practices of vernacular language at home and in surroundings guide vernacular language maintenance (Pauwels,2016). The analysis displays that the relationship between culture, attitude, and prestige requires parents to maintain the vernacular language. Batak Toba language is maintained dominantly by families. Mother language is maintained. We conclude parents who have a positive attitude to their culture to show their prestige enforce children to maintain the vernacular language. This study recommends that further research explore vernacular language maintenance across three generations of Javanese-Batak Toba families.

Abstract

Quarantine Tales is a film that presents various problems in the context of quarantine during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study discusses how the trailer of the film gives a semiotic sign to the audience. This qualitative study aims to describe semiotic signs in the trailer for the movie Quarantine Tales (2020). The analysis of Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic theory is used in this study, namely the analysis using a triangle of meaning by combining representamen, objects, and interpretants. The data is screenshots from the Quarantine Tales movie trailer, which can be accessed on the official BASE Indonesia YouTube channel. Data collection methods used are documentation and observation. The results show that the meaning of representamen, objects, and interpretants is related to social, economic, and moral issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One of them is poverty, a prank that leads to cyberbullying, pornography, and household or family problems. In conclusion, the semiotic signs in the Quarantine Tales movie trailer provide a dramatic picture of the problems during the pandemic for the audience.

Abstract

Although many studies on umpasa have been carried out previously in the Toba Batak language; however, a study on gender-based conceptual metaphors from a cognitive semantic perspective has never been conducted before. This study discusses the conceptual metaphor of gender contained in the umpasa of Batak Toba. The theory of the study is oriented to the conceptual metaphor by Lakoff and Johnson (2003) as the main theory and Cruse and Croft (2004) for the image schematic. This descriptive qualitative research was conducted by using a thematic analysis design to describe the types of conceptual metaphors in the Toba Batak language. The results of this study reveal that there are three types of conceptual metaphors about gender contained in umpasa, as a form of oral tradition. Based on the analysis, 15 conceptual metaphors were found in the study, namely (1) 11 structural metaphors, (2) 3 orientational metaphors, and (3)1ontological metaphor. Furthermore, in the classification of source domains, four of the fifteen data presented conceptualize women as the source of money and economic transactions, then men as physical resources, and other source domains. The results of this study add to references on the topic of conceptual metaphors in regional languages in Indonesia in general, and in the Batak language specifically.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the agility of male and female senior high EFL students of SMA Negeri 4 Pematangsiantar in online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study employs the theory of learning agility introduced by Gravatt and Caldwell (2016). As they stated, there are four dimensions of learning agility, namely; mental agility, people agility, results in agility, and change agility. The sampling technique used was random sampling. 150 students of X PMIA 1, 2, 3, and X PIS 1 and 2 were selected as the participants. The score of male students for all types of learning agility was 6798. While the score of female students for all types of learning agility was 6831. From 150 participants, the percentage of male students who had a high level of agility was 27,33%, while the female students were 26%. The percentage of male students who had a moderate la level of agility was 22,67%, while the female students were 78.33%. None of the male and female students had a low level of agility. The results showed that when it came to the o general calculation of scores, the female students were higher and more agile. However, when it was seen individually, especially in the learning activities, the male students had a higher level of agility rather than the female students.

Abstract

In this paper, the authors propose that attention to affect/emotion be given greater prominence in applied linguistics following a theoretical and pedagogical framework delineated as critical affective literacy (CAL) by Anwaruddin (2016). Following the IICOLA conference theme of emotions in multidisciplinary studies, the authors outline the interdisciplinary influences (e.g., philosophy, memory studies, semiotics/multimodality, citizenship education, etc.) that underpin key CAL principles and their understanding of affect/emotion in applied linguistics. In support, the authors discuss the potency of affect and emotionality of texts by way of duoethnography (Norris & Sawyer, 2012, 2017), a research methodology they have utilized in exploring affective/emotional dimensions of language in educational domains (e.g., English for Academic Purposes and Language Teacher Education) and as part of broader socio-political deliberation (i.e., critical citizenship pedagogies). The authors detail specific features of duoethnographic research methodology (e.g., participant transparency and juxtaposition, epistemological and ideological risk-taking) that contribute to CAL principles and aspirations. The authors also identify several implications of their work for the development of CAL in applied linguistics followed by brief descriptions of curricular and pedagogical innovations where affect/emotion have been integral to the pedagogical and literacy strategies described.

Abstract

Advertisement plays an important role in the progression and development of a public company or an individual agency. The performance of an advertisement cannot be separated from the elements inside. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between image (visual elements) and text (linguistic elements) in a context. This research analyzed the multimodal aspect of Lazada's online advertisement. The data was obtained from the internet by accessing the legal website of Lazada and selecting one image as the sample. The method used in the research was a qualitative method that focused on descriptive and interpretative analysis. Generic Structure Potential (GSP) proposed by Cheong (2004) was applied to reveal visual and linguistic elements. Meanwhile, Halliday’s transitivity was applied to analyze types of processes in order to show how those elements represented the message conveyed. The research results showed that the visual elements on Lazada online advertisement were Lead, Emblem, and Display. Meanwhile, the linguistic elements were Announcement, Emblem, Call-and-visit-information, Enhancer, and Tag. Moreover, both elements were interconnected, in which attractive visual and linguistic elements directly affect the quality of the advertisement performed.
