Abstract

The increasing use of plastic in coastal areas has led to the accumulation of microplastic particles in marine environments, which can enter the food chain and pose risks to both aquatic organisms and humans as final consumers. Microplastics, defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, originate from the degradation of larger plastics due to ultraviolet exposure and anthropogenic activities such as fishing, industrial waste, and household garbage. This study aimed to analyze the concentration, types, and polymer characteristics of microplastics in the flesh and digestive tract of mackerel tuna (Euthynnus affinis) caught by fishermen at PPI Ujong Baroh, West Aceh. The research was conducted from August to September 2024 using a purposive sampling method. Six fish samples were collected, and their flesh and digestive tract were digested using 10% KOH solution to remove organic matter. The filtrate was filtered with Whatman filter paper (1.6 µm) and observed under an optical microscope to identify the shape and color of microplastics. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to identify the polymer type. The results revealed five microplastic forms: fiber, fragment, film, pellet, and foam. Fiber was the most dominant, with an average abundance of 73.05 particles/gram in flesh and 42.83 particles/gram in the digestive tract. FTIR analysis confirmed that the dominant polymer was Polyamide (Nylon), which is commonly used in fishing nets and ropes. These findings indicate that microplastic contamination has occurred in fish consumed by coastal communities in West Aceh, reflecting the growing marine pollution problem in Indonesia. This study highlights the importance of strengthening marine waste management and monitoring seafood safety to reduce potential health and ecological impacts.

Abstract

Communities in Lampung province, Indonesia, are at the forefront of climate change impacts. Hence, this study aims to determine the climatic vulnerability of Lampung local communities. The study encompasses multifaceted aspects of climate exposure and its impact on the local communities of three resorts (Kuala Penet, Susukan Baru, Cabang). The analysis consists of examining historical climate patterns and how they correspond to the community's climate vulnerability. The analysis covers historical climate data from the period of 2004 to 2024, which includes the daily temperature (maximum, minimum, and average value) and daily precipitation. Furthermore, interviews and Focus Group Discsussions are conducted to obtain information from the communities. The data is then interpreted by using the DPSIR framework. It reveals that inland and coastal communities differ regarding these aspects: risk exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capabilities. When it comes to exposure, inland agricultural communities face risks from drought, soil degradation, and unpredictable rainfall. Meanwhile, coastal communities are affected by rising temperatures, rising sea levels, tidal floods, coastal erosion, and the depletion of fish stocks. Sensitivity is measured by means of livelihood, socioeconomic status, and access to healthcare. Marginalized groups, particularly the poor and elderly, face compounded risks due to limited healthcare access and displacement threats, with the most vulnerable being the coastal communities of Cabang Resort. Furthermore, when it comes to adaptive capabilities, both terrestrial and coastal communities in Lampung have very limited capacities to anticipate most of the climate change impacts. Strengthening climate resilience will require targeted interventions, including improvement of infrastructure, access to healthcare and disaster readiness programs.

Abstract

The capture fisheries sector plays a strategic role in the national economy, including at the Cilacap Ocean Fishing Port (PPS Cilacap), the center of marine product fishing and distribution. This study aims to identify the forms, causes, and impacts of conflicts between fishermen, fish entrepreneurs, and the government in managing capture fisheries at the Cilacap PPS. Data collection was conducted on November 10, 2025, through questionnaire-based interviews with fishermen, entrepreneurs, and port managers, covering operational aspects, economics, regulatory perceptions, and potential conflicts. The results indicate that conflicts are triggered by differences in interests in access to port facilities, catch distribution, understanding of fishing zone regulations, and inequality in asset ownership and capital sources. Visual analysis of the data shows that fishing activities are dominated by medium-scale vessels measuring 5–30 GT, the use of fishing rods as the primary gear, and a high reliance on diesel fuel for operations. Although most fishermen have joined groups, access to government assistance and insurance remains unequal. These findings underscore the need for institutional strengthening, increased regulatory dissemination, and the implementation of collaborative zone-based fisheries management to reduce the potential for conflict and support the sustainability of capture fisheries in the Cilacap Fishing Port (PPS)
