Abstract

English communication is very important in this era. Students are expected to have proficient English skills. However, in reality, students often use English dictionaries when talking to others. A dictionary is a collection of words that functions as a reference that provides translations of words, meanings, and how to read words. Therefore, this research provide an overview of students who often rely on dictionaries when speaking English with other people. The purpose of this research is to see the presentations of students who rely on dictionaries when talking to other people. That way, it will be easier to conclude whether using a dictionary helps students or makes students dependent and ultimately unable to speak English fluently. The research method used is quantitative. Data were collected by using a survey method. The survey method aims to collect data as appropriate by giving questionnaires to the sample to be studied. To maximize the data collected, the survey that the researchers distributed used a Likert Item scale. The participants consisted of 85 of 5th semester students of the English Education Study Program at The University of Nias. The research results show that students still rely on using dictionaries when speaking English.  The ongoing reliance on dictionaries indeed carries a detrimental effect; hence, it is recommended that dictionaries be employed only when necessary.

Abstract

Film is a kind of social communication that can be made base on the social reality that exists in and around the setting in which it is set. This study aims to examine the moral values in the movie Ayla: The Daughter of War. The content analysis method was employed in this study. Primary and secondary data are the two categories of data used in this study. The key information gleaned straight from the movie Ayla the Daughter of War is known as primary data. secondary data included documents, journals, and other sources of information that could help with the study. This study employs two methods to collect data: documentation procedures and observation approaches. This study used Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to gain a more precise understanding of the symbols and significance of the ethical lesson conveyed in the movie Ayla: The Daughter of War. The finding showed that there are eight moral values—humanity, helping each other, tolerance, brave, responsible, love and affection, human connections to God, and keeping promises—were identified by researchers in this movie. It can be concluded that there are numerous moral lessons and prerequisites for the meaning of the film. This movie shows that despite differences in racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds, empathy, love, and compassion can still exist. Aside from that, this movie also teaches that love and affection can arise from an honest heart regardless of a person's biological link to another person.

Abstract

This study aims to provide students' perceptions of how to use digital storytelling in the classroom to facilitate their understanding of reading narrative texts. The research sample consists of eighth-graders from the Islamic junior high school SMPIT IQRA. In this study, a quantitative approach was paired with a descriptive research strategy. Using a closed-ended questionnaire, the study's researchers gathered data on how students felt about the use of digital storytelling in the instruction of reading narrative texts. Descriptive statistics were also used to examine the data, and tables displaying and discussing the results were created. According to the findings, most students firmly agreed with the following: students should find learning and teaching enjoyable; students should be able to comprehend when reading narrative texts; and students should use digital storytelling in the classroom. In summary, students' favorable opinions on using digital storytelling in reading instruction help them understand how to read narrative texts.

Abstract

The internationalization of curriculum is an integration of the application of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in recent years. This research aims to investigate the implications of internationalizing the curriculum through the implementation of English as Medium of Instructions (EMI) in international classes for Bengkulu University law students. The participants in this research were 2nd and 4th semester Law students who had joined the International class program with a total of 28 participants. This research uses a qualitative methodology design with the instruments used, namely a questionnaire using a Likert scale and interviews. The results show that students have positive perceptions and tendencies towards the application of EMI in international classes. However, there are several weaknesses and challenges faced, such as competency in language use and English proficiency certification. The implication is that the International Class Program as a means of implementing EMI in the learning process must follow international curriculum standards that are appropriate by paying attention to many aspects, including the abilities of students, teachers, stakeholders and program management. Therefore, in conclusion, the application of EMI has a positive effect and is highly recommended for all types of scientific disciplines by paying attention to international standard curriculum implementation standards.

Abstract

Speaking is about hearing and inability to hear or hear correctly may hamper the expected communication of meaningful words. For the deaf and hard of hearing, production of meaningful sound becomes difficult because of inability to process auditory information properly. Hence, engagement in exercise that will involve oral language might be a difficult task. This study therefore investigated the attitudes to and knowledge of oral English by the deaf and hard of hearing learners and their teachers’ perception. Descriptive survey research design was employed and a total of 100 deaf and hard of hearing students and 29 teachers were purposively selected. Attitudes to Oral English Scale, Perceived Knowledge of Oral English and Perceived Adequacy of Oral English with reliability of 0.78, 0.81, and 0.77 respectively were the instruments used to collect relevant data. Data collected were analysed using simple descriptive statistic such as percentage and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The results revealed that deaf and hard-of-hearing students have positive attitudes towards the English language but possess poor knowledge of oral English and exhibit a negative disposition towards the teaching of oral English to the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Additionally, there was no significant relationship between their attitudes towards oral English and their knowledge of oral English. Hence, alternative arrangement should be provided for the deaf and hard of hearing to compensate for the oral English learning.

Abstract

Online grammar is a popular way for students to improve their language skills through digital resources, such as websites, apps, and online courses. However, the study on online learning grammar has not been found in the research context and location. This study investigates how students learn grammar online, how they perceive the improvement and to find out activities that students apply to cross-check the improvement of their online grammar learning. The data was collected through survey questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. By using mixed methods, the questionnaire survey was created through Google Forms and collected from 108 participants of EFL students. The last instruments were interviews to find out more about the improvement of students in online grammar learning. The researchers selected 24 participants randomly from year 2, 3, and 4 students in English Literature of the Institute of Foreign Languages to interview about their perceptions of the improvement of such learning methods. The result showed that 82.4% of students stated that online grammar has improved their understanding of complex grammar concepts and increased their confidence in using English language grammar. And 80.60% agreed with the statement that online grammar learning has increased their ability to English language. Another 77.8% agreed that online grammar learning has improved their ability to construct persuasive arguments in writing. These findings show that it’s really important to know about what ways or activities that each student use to learn grammar online. Online grammar learning has significantly improved students' understanding of complex grammar concepts, confidence in using English, persuasive argument construction, and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Listening skills are one of the most important and hard skills for non-native students which contains many sub-skills. Therefore, students require more practice with sufficient support materials to master their competence. There are two subjects providing listening skills practice for students in their program. However, the study on the view of students on these subjects has not been found in the research context. A This research aims to explore EFL students’ perception of listening skills embedded in IELTs and Core English courses, and the comparison of these two courses. This study used a quantitative research method with a survey design focused on the students in year 3 and year 4 of an English major. The researchers used types of listening, such as selective listening, intensive listening, comprehension listening, critical listening, interactive listening, and discriminative listening, as the main questions for conducting the questionnaires. As a result of the research, researchers compared the total between Core English and IETLS subjects and found that studying Core English and IELTS subjects can help students improve their listening skills but the most improvement is the IETLS subject. Furthermore, future researchers could employ this research to identify further listening difficulties or to compare the results. They can also use it as a reference to their study.
