Abstract

Abstract The key work in the issue of women's rights, individuality, and sisterly love in the 19th century, Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (1868–1869), follows three sisters' following their dreams while facing societal norms during the Civil War: Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy. The novel critiques strict gender roles via Jo March, who challenges norms by becoming a writer, highlighting Alcott's feminist view. This paper examines Little Women’s relevance today through adaptations, particularly Greta Gerwig's 2019 film, reflecting current cultural values. Thematic shifts in the approaches to feminism, family, and social norms are discussed in the paper. Each adaptation represents its sociohistorical context, from conservatism in the 1933 film to the feminist critique so bodily expressed by Gerwig. The conclusion confirms the status of Little Women as an active cultural reference of continuous debates on women's independence, equity, and identity. Alcott's story about how one sisterly family struggles through to success and self-determination really denotes an emerging feminist discourse. Little Women is such an important document in helping to shape emerging feminist discussions that it manages to be a part of both literature and culture.

Abstract

This research examines the representation of feminism in the short story "Si Nuri" written by Adina Dwifatna using Sara Mills' theory of critical discourse analysis feminism. The story revolves around the life and inner struggles of Ira, a wife to Martin. Women in the story are depicted as objects used to serve their husbands, manage household chores, and fulfill the role of motherhood. Hence, the researcher aims to explore the representation and the injustices experienced by the main female character in "Si Nuri." Furthermore, the researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method and documentation techniques to collect the data for this research. Meanwhile, to analyze the data the researcher uses content analysis techniques. The findings reveal that the story portrays women as confined to societal expectations and restricted in their freedom and autonomy. The gender stereotypes associated with the roles assigned to women perpetuate injustice, leading to the limitations felt by woman. Language and symbols employed in the story reinforce the social constructions that uphold gender inequality, with language reflecting power dynamics and social dominance centered around men.

Abstract

This research was purposely conducted to describe the Rhetorical Structures of Native English in the writing introduction section of research articles. The data was chosen from the research article published by two disciplines of journal which is Journal of Pragmatics(JOP) and Journal of English for Academic Purposes (JEAP). This present study was conducted to find out whether the introduction section of the selected introduction in both journals follows the fundamental CARS Model by Swales (2004). Ten introductions of research articles from both journals were annotated in this research. Five research publications were deliberately selected from each discipline. The findings indicate that the introduction sections of research articles from two journal disciplines authored by native English speakers predominantly encompass the moves and steps outlined in Swales' (2004) CARS model, with Move 1 and Move 3 regarded as a mandatory move. Meanwhile, Move 2 is regarded as arbitrary. In conclusion, it can be inferred that the utilization of rhetorical patterns is not contingent upon the authors' proficiency in written language; rather, authors must implement rhetorical realizations in composing their introductions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of compound words on the @PopBase X account in 2024. Using a qualitative approach and the theory of Delahunty and Garvey (2010), this study focuses on identifying three types of compound words: endocentric, exocentric, and copulative. Data were collected from @PopBase tweets throughout 2024, specifically those related to entertainment news and pop culture. The findings of the study revealed that endocentric compounds dominated the data, with terms such as soundtrack and fanbase being the most frequently used. Exocentric compounds, such as box office and blockbuster, and copulative compounds, such as singer-songwriter and action comedy, also appeared but were less frequent. The study also found that most of the compounds had transparent meanings and the compounds in the posts functioned as nouns. These findings suggest that the use of compound words on @PopBase helps facilitate concise and engaging communication, especially in the fast-paced digital environment of platform X. This study contributes to the understanding of word formation in X application and highlights the evolving role of morphology in online entertainment communication.
