Abstract

English textbooks play a vital role in providing students with language learning input in class activities. Unfortunately, the selection and evaluation of English textbooks has often received insufficient attention and thought. Content such as reading material receives less attention than layout analysis, design, and cultural understanding. The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which reading material cover the genres and skills presented in senior high school English textbooks in Indonesia. The qualitative-based content analysis method was used in this study. There were three English textbooks observed, namely those for grades 10, 11, and 12 published by Ministry of Education and Culture in Indonesia. The aspects observed in reading materials include reading genres and skills based on Brown's theory. The study discovered textbooks are dominated by personal reading with 17 reading material and 14 academic materials. Meanwhile, job-related reading is limited to class 10 textbooks. When it comes to reading skills, macroskills take precedence over microskills. Furthermore, based on these findings it can be concluded that the textbooks need to be developed to provide a balanced portion of reading genres and skills in each chapter. The limitations and suggestions are further discussed.

Abstract

For teaching and student learning, textbooks are a vital and widely used resource. The purpose of this study was to assess the unit design in "Bahasa Inggris kelas XI Semester I" to respond the post-pandemic Covid-19. This study was classified as a textbook evaluation. Document analysis and interviews were used to collect data. Miles' and Huberman's model was considered to be used in data analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The study finds that the textbook addresses only three of the six suggested indicators, lacks appropriate images that can aid students' comprehension, and has no clear grading system or instructions for students, which can lead to confusion and undermine their ability to complete tasks successfully. The study recommends that future textbook writers should consider appropriate visuals to complement the text, use pictures as symbols or icons, and provide explicit instructions to guide students towards achieving learning objectives. The findings of the study can inform future textbook writers, teachers, and curriculum developers to improve the quality of English language education in Indonesian schools. Moreover, the study highlights the need for textbooks to adapt to the new normal of remote learning.

Abstract

This explanatory sequential mixed-method study tackles the English language proficiency challenge faced by non-English major students, emphasizing the critical role of the college phase in shaping the pre-professional skills of Indonesian youth. It aims to assess whether the Self-Video Recording (SVR) technique can boost the self-confidence of them when speaking English. The research directly assesses first-year students at Universitas Tidar. The primary focus is on evaluating SVR's positive impact on self-assurance in English communication. Based on the data compiled, there is a consistent trend in the responses from students who participated in both the questionnaire and the interview. Out of the 65 students, it was reported that their confidence levels increased after undergoing the interventions carried out by the research team. This indicates that the majority of students who reacted positively to the role-play exercises and the implementation of the SVR technique to enhance their confidence in speaking English are likely the same group of students. Hence, it is plausible to consider that the research participants who observed only a slight improvement cannot be solely attributed to external factors but may also be influenced by internal factors, such as a lack of interest in speaking English and other related considerations.

Abstract

Racism has become the biggest social issue in the world because of its constant unjust treatment that affects people from minority races, ethnicities, and religions. Related to this issue, The Hate U Give conveys the social condition where racial disparity towards black people is profoundly represented in the narrative. This study focuses on identifying the ideational metafunction elements, including transitivity and ergativity patterns found in the narrative. It reveals how the racial disparity is performed by the use of the meta function. Mixed method research was employed to collect and analyze the data to yield more insightful information that complements both methodologies’ findings. The theory of Systemic Functional Grammar was used to identify and classify the ideational metafunction elements from the collected narrative, and the Discourse Analysis approach was applied as a theoretical approach to support the observation. The result concluded that in the analysis of transitivity patterns, material and relational processes dominate the narrative by approximately 25% to 33% of the entire collected narrative. The findings show that racial disparity in analyzing black people that was performed by law enforcement in the collected narrative is manifested in three forms: police brutality, racial profiling, and sentencing policy.

Abstract

Teaching vocabulary for EFL young learners always challenges the teacher. The researchers have investigated the condition of SD Islam Pojok 2 Kediri and found that the school only provided modules in the English class, so researchers aim to develop a medium called a big book. This study is research and development, adapted from Dick and Carey and modified by Sugiono into seven steps: need analysis, designing, expert validation, revision I, try-out, revision II, and evaluation. The researchers collected the data through observation, interview, and documentation, then analyzed it using content and narrative analysis techniques. The results of the study showed that there are four topics to assemble the big books, namely daily activity, jobs, tourism places, and food. The expert validation reveals that three big books have been eligible for use, and one needs to be revised. In the try-out process, it was found that the teacher and students liked the story and illustrations of the big books. It helps the students gain new vocabulary and strengthen their existing vocabulary. To sum up, developing big books to improve young learners’ vocabulary acquisition has been successful.

First, quantitative data was analyzed using statistical description and inferential descriptive. This study revealed that there is correlation between students’ growth mindset and students’ speaking ability. The value of Sig. (2-tailed) in the person correlation test is 0,027 which is bigger than 0,05 and it means that there is significant correlation between students’ growth mindset and students’ speaking ability. Meanwhile the correlation value is 0,27 that indicated the correlation is weak based on the degree of correlation table that correlation value between 0,21-0,40 is weak correlation. Further discussion is presented in this study.
