Abstract

The Islamic Golden Age occurred between the 8th and 14th centuries, a period when knowledge in the Islamic world reached its zenith. During this time, Muslim scientists, philosophers, and scholars made significant contributions to various fields of knowledge, such as mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy. Key figures in the development of science included Al-Khwarizmi, who pioneered algebra, and Ibn Sina, who authored the medical encyclopedia Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb (The Canon of Medicine). Great libraries and universities, such as the Bayt al-Hikmah (House of Wisdom) in Baghdad, served as intellectual hubs that attracted scholars from across the globe. However, this progress eventually slowed due to factors such as the Mongol invasions, political fragmentation, and the rise of Europe. The scientific legacy of the Islamic Golden Age remains relevant and influential in the history of global knowledge, highlighting the pivotal role of Islamic civilization in advancing human intellectual endeavors.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the framework and role of the Iwadh tradition in the Arab Ampel neighborhood of Surabaya. The Iwadh tradition is a socio-religious practice where members of the Arab community visit one another and seek mutual forgiveness during Eid al-Fitr as a way of completing their Ramadan worship. This tradition is particularly noteworthy for its ability to foster social bonds that transcend differences, including interfaith boundaries. The research utilizes methods such as interviews, observations, and documentation, analyzed through a sociological approach inspired by Emile Durkheim's perspective. The study finds that the Iwadh tradition plays a significant role in building social and spiritual connections. By exchanging visits and sharing food, it strengthens collective identity and social solidarity, maintaining elements of mechanical solidarity in the face of modernization.

Abstract

This research focuses on the response of Ilmu Kalam to contemporary theological challenges, particularly related to atheism, secularism, and modern scientific developments. The underlying concern of this study is how Ilmu Kalam can maintain its relevance in addressing increasingly complex theological issues amidst the advancements in science and the dominance of atheistic views in contemporary academic circles. This study adopts a qualitative approach with a literature review of the thoughts of key figures in Ilmu Kalam, alongside critiques of atheism and secularism, to analyze how Ilmu Kalam responds to contemporary theological challenges. Abstract

This research discusses AI Ethics, which arises from the rapid development of AI that creates various problems. Meanwhile, Tariq Ramadan's Ethical Concept, based on Maqashid Asy-Syari'ah, has pluralistic and inclusive values. This ethic becomes a new perspective that can be applied to AI. This research uses a qualitative approach with the library research method (literature sources). The research results show that AI is the ability of computational systems to perform tasks of human intelligence. AI was initially designed to resemble human intelligence as closely as possible, even to match it. AI has the potential to threaten human sustainability when it reaches the stage of superintelligence. The concept of friendly AI can reduce the risk of human extinction. The application of Ramadan's Ethics, based on Maqashid Asy-Syari'ah, which integrates socio-cultural and religious aspects, offers an AI ethics concept to be applied according to the context in which AI is needed. The framework of friendly AI proposed by Ramadan has its own uniqueness compared to Asimov's Laws, Yudkowsky's Utility, and social-friendly AI.

Abstract

This study examines the ethics of transhumanism in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and its implications for humanity through the perspective of Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics. The research focuses on the threats to human dignity, moral autonomy, and social injustice arising from the application of transhumanism. Using a qualitative research method based on a literature review, the findings reveal that AI development within the framework of transhumanism tends to violate universal moral principles by treating humans as mere instruments for technological progress. Additionally, autonomous AI has the potential to eliminate human moral responsibility, increase dependency on technology, and deepen the inequality of access between affluent and underprivileged groups. This study recommends AI development policies that emphasize respect for human dignity, moral autonomy, and equitable technology distribution to prevent the risks of dehumanization and social inequality.

Abstract

This study explores Islamic feminism, a movement that reinterprets Islamic teachings by emphasizing justice and gender equality. Rooted within the Islamic tradition, Islamic feminism asserts that authentic Islamic values uphold, rather than marginalize, women's dignity. The research examines Islamic feminism both theoretically and contextually, showing how religious texts can function as tools of liberation or oppression. Using Paul Ricoeur's critical hermeneutics and Mansour Fakih's structural analysis, the study reveals that Islamic feminism extends beyond theological debates—it also challenges patriarchal structures embedded in social, cultural, and political life. By uncovering these dynamics, the research emphasizes Islamic feminism's potential to foster critical gender awareness and promote more inclusive, just, and contextually relevant religious practices. This approach not only affirms women's rights within Islam but also repositions the faith as a source of empowerment and transformative change.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of philosophical and scientific thought in Ancient Greece. The academic concern driving this research is the limited understanding of how Greek society shifted from myth-based beliefs to a rational mindset that gave rise to philosophy and science. The study employs a qualitative method using a library research approach and descriptive-analytical analysis. The findings reveal that rational thought in Ancient Greece laid the foundation for modern scientific methods through the contributions of figures such as Thales, Heraclitus, Democritus, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. They developed rational approaches to nature, ethics, logic, and epistemology. The study also finds that this intellectual shift was influenced by the socio-political dynamics of Ancient Greece, which encouraged the pursuit of knowledge more systematically and objectively.

Abstract

This research examines feminine elements in Ibn ‘Arabī's cosmology and their implications for ecofeminism and contemporary Islamic feminism. It responds to the lack of holistic studies that integrate Ibn ’Arabī's Sufi metaphysical thought with Islamic feminist and ecological discourse. The research method used is a descriptive-analytical approach by studying primary texts by Ibn ‘Arabī and secondary literature related to Islamic feminism and ecofeminism. The study results reveal that Ibn ’Arabī views femininity as a symbol and an essential and equal aspect of divine reality, opening up spiritual and social space for gender equality. The concept of femininity in Ibn ‘Arabī's Sufi cosmology serves as a strong and relevant theological foundation for contemporary Muslim feminists and an important basis for the development of Islamic ecofeminism. This research contributes to more inclusive, progressive, and sustainable studies of gender and spirituality in Islam.

Abstract

This study explores the intricate relationship between religion, identity, and politics in the context of Indonesia's 2019 and 2024 presidential elections. The academic concern stems from increasing societal polarization, the rise of idolatrous voters, and the shallow use of religious narratives in political discourse. Using a qualitative approach and critical discourse analysis, this research investigates how identity politics, theological reasoning, and candidates’ rhetorical strategies shape voter behavior. Findings reveal that low levels of literacy and the dominance of religious symbolism foster irrational political choices and intensify social conflict. Drawing from Mohammed Arkoun's framework of political ethics, particularly his principles of liberative-transformation and religion-state relations, this study proposes strengthening critical reasoning and ethical political ideation. In conclusion, religion, identity, and politics are inseparable systems, best addressed through historical awareness, critical thought, and the formation of transformative agents.
