Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh data yang menunjukan perolehan hasil belajar peserta didik. Untuk mencapai motivasi belajar anak yamg meningkat dan hasil belajar peneliti melakukan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) untuk mengetahui akar penyebab masalah dari aktifitas belajar peserta didik kelas VII SMP. Berdasarkan hal tersebut peneliti mencoba melaksanakan pembelajaran inovasi menggunakan pembelajaran Discovery Learning. Pembelajaran inovasi ini dilaksanakan bertujuan untuk mengetahui hal- hal apa saja yang terjadi didalam aktifitas belajar siswa dan bagaimana hasil belajar siswa pada pelajaran Bahasa Inggris materi Descriptive text dengan menggunakan metode Discovery Learning dapat berjalan sesuai yang diharapkan. Adapun pelaksanaan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar anak melalui perbaikan pada siklus 1 dan siklus 2 dengan melakukan desain prosedur perbaikan, pengamatan, teknik analisis data serta melakukan refleksi diri untuk pendidik. Dari hasil pengamatan pendidik, menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan anak dalam menggunakan metode Discovery Learning.

Abstract

This final project is about the use of picture prompts to improve students‘ writing in descriptive texts at the eighth grade students of SMP N 5 Tambusai Utara, Rokan Hulu in the academic year of 2021. An action research was conducted to find out in what ways picture prompts could improve students‘ writing in descriptive texts. The subject of this research was 31 students of eighth grade students since they got problem in mastering descriptive texts. I used some writing tests, field notes, and questionnaires in collecting the data. In this research I conducted two cycles consisted of cycle one and cycle 2. In cycle one, there were a pre test, three meetings for treatment, and a formative test. In cycle two, there were three meetings for treatment and a post test. The result of the data showed a significant improvement of the students‘ writing. The students‘ writing improved in all writing aspects including grammar, vocabulary, mechanic and relevance. The average results after conducting the research improved; pre test (57.58), formative test (65.00), and post test (81.13). Furthermore, based on questionnaires and field notes, it shows that the implementation of picture prompts made the students‘ behavior changed. They were more interested in writing descriptive texts. The prompts could ease their problem and helped them in revealing the ideas. Therefore, it can be concluded that picture prompts as learning media contributes to the improvement of students‘ writing in descriptive texts.

Abstract

This study is about the use of „Snakes and Ladders‟ game toward the students‟ mastery of past form of irregular verbs. The study is aimed to (1) find out whether teaching the past form of irregular verbs by using „Snakes and Ladders‟ game is effective to improve the students‟ achievement in learning the verbs, and (2) find out the students‟ attitude and feeling toward the use of „Snakes and Ladders‟ game. The subjects of this study were the students of IX D of SMP N 5 Tambusai Utara. The selection of the class was based on the suggestion of the English teacher. The researcher used an action research design. There were two cycles in this study. Every cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Before conducting the cyclical activities, the researcher gave the students an Initial Pre-test. After that, she gave the treatments to the students. In Cycle 1, she used group work without classical problem solving and showing the spelling of the verbs. However, the result was not satisfying enough. In Cycle 2, she used classical problem solving and also showing the spelling of the verbs. In this cycle, the result was very satisfying. After the cycle 2 was finished, she gave a Final Post-test and also questionnaire to the students. Based on the data analysis, there was a significant improvement of the students‟achievement after the use of „Snakes and Ladders‟ game was given. This improvement was proved by the comparison between the result of Initial Pre-test (68.14) and that of Final Post-test (88.80). After being showed the spelling of the verbs, their understanding toward the verbs was better. The classical problem solving that the researcher used in Cycle 2 successfully helped students learn the verbs from their friends‟ incorrect answers. The results of the observation checklists showed that the students‟ attitude in Cycle 2 was better than that in Cycle 1. Based on the result of questionnaire, the students also supported the use of „Snakes and Ladders‟ game in the teaching of grammar, especially the past form of irregular verbs. It was proved by their positive responses in relation to the use of that medium. Based on the results of the analysis above, it can be concluded that the use of „Snakes and Ladders‟ game successfully improves the students‟ mastery of past form of irregular verbs in the teaching of grammar.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan agar melalui model discovery learning dapat meningkatkan prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris materi teks deskriptif orang pada siswa kelas X-A SMA N 1 Bangun Purba semester genap tahun pelajaran 2019/2020. Prosedur penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus, dimana kedua siklus itu saling berkaitan artinya siklus dua merupakan kelanjutan dari siklus satu. Setiap siklus meliputi : 1) Tahapan perencanaan, 2) Tahapan pelaksanaan tindakan, 3) Observasi/evaluasi, dan 4) Tahapan refleksi. Pelaksanaan tiap siklus terdiri dari 2 kali pertemuan . Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan satu teknik pengumpulan data yakni dengan tes subyektif yang berjumlah 10 butir soal dalam bentuk uraian. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pada saat pra siklus, nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh hanya 64,57 naik sebesar 3,46 menjadi 68,03 pada siklus I. Pada siklus II, nilai rata-rata kelas menjadi 78,40 menunjukkan kenaikan sebesar 13,83 dari siklus I. yang cukup positif juga terjadi pada kenaikan perolehan nilai yang memenuhi batas nilai KKM yang telah ditentukan yaitu pada pra siklus hanya 40,00 % siswa yang mampu mencapai batas KKM ( Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal ), pada siklus I prosentase siswa yang memenuhi batas KKM naik sebesar 19,23% menjadi 56,67%. Kenaikan prosentase terus terjadi pada siklus II. Pada siklus akhir ini prosentase siswa yang memenuhi nilai KKM menjadi 90,00%, berarti naik sebesar 33,33% dari siklus I dan sebesar 50,00% dari pra siklus. Dengan demikian berarti dari data tersebut di atas bahwa dengan melalui model discovery learning pada pembelajaran siswa kelas X-A SMA N 1 Bangun Purbasemester genap tahun pelajaran 2019/2020 ternyata dapat meningkatkan prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris materi teks deskriptif.

Abstract

This final project is a comparative study in experimental design that aims at investigating whether there is any significant difference of the achievements in writing descriptive texts of students who are taught by using flashcards and those who are taught by using BBC Nature videos with an assumption that these media can help them to interpret the content of the course. The subjects of the study were the eight grade students of SMA N Bangun Purba, Rokan Hulu in the academic year of 2023. There were two groups that were given different treatments. The first group was the control group who was taught by using flashcards, and the second group was the experimental group who was taught by using BBC Nature videos. There were seven meetings for each class;one meeting was for the pre test, five meetings were for treatments and one meeting for the post test. In the test, the students of the control group used the flashcards and the experimental group used the BBC Nature videos to write a descriptive text based on the topic provided: animal. The result of this research showed that the pre-test average scores of the two groups were nearly the same. The means of the pre-tests were 65.07 (the control group) and 65.47 (the experimental group). The slight difference between the two groups indicated that they were similar learning basis. After the control and the experimental groups were given different treatments, the score of the two groups increased. The means turned into 76.67 for the control group and 84.00 for the experimental group. The improvement were 11.60 (the control group), and 18.53 (the experimental group). The result of t-test based on the difference of two means revealed that the obtained value (3.86) was higher than t-table value for α = 5% (2.00). It means that there was a significant difference between the students who were taught with flashcards and those who were taught with BBC Nature videos. Based on the result above, it is concluded that in this study BBC Nature videos are more effective than flashcards to improve students‟ ability in writing a descriptive text. It is suggested that video can be used as alternative media for teaching descriptive text. Further research is suggested to be carried out for a better understanding of this field.

Abstract

Teaching English vocabulary to Junior High School should be more interesting and joyful. Teachers can use a strategy in conducting materials in order to attract students‟ attention and interest. The objectives of this study are to find out whether “Word Clap Game” can be used as strategy in teaching vocabulary at the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Tambusai Utara and to find out whether the use of “Word Clap Game” can improve the students‟vocabulary achievement in learning vocabulary. Vocabulary is the one of the English components which has to be mastered and acquired by students in learning a new language. In this study, I used Word Clap Game as a strategy for teaching vocabulary to the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Tambusai Utara.Word clap game is a game that uses claps and collaboration with other students. An action research was conducted in this study. There were two cycles in this study. Each cycle was carried out through four steps. They were planning, acting, obseving, and reflecting.The subjects of this study were 33 eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Tambusai Utara in the academic year 2021. The writer got the data from observation, test and questionnaire.The writer as a teacher tried to apply word clap game to improve students vocabulary mastery of students. According to the analyses, the pre-test mean is 64,4, while the post-test mean is 77,1. Between pre-test and post-test, they were given one assessment at the end of cycle one with the mean of 69,7. Thus, the students‟ vocabulary mastery is improved by 12,7 (19,7%). The students‟ activity during the treatment shows that they appreciated the Word Clap game I used in the teaching and learning process. Based on the results, it can be concluded that Word Clap game can be used as a strategy to improve the students‟ vocabulary mastery. Moreover,the students‟ opinion about the game also indicates that it helps the students in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

This study was conducted based on the fact that writing is the most difficult skill for students to master. Students face difficulties in learning writing. They are not sure of how to arrange sentences into good paragraphs, how to develop their ideas, they have lack of vocabulary and tend to use only certain words they have known in writing. They also apply incorrect grammar in their writing. Teacher considers that teaching writing is a difficult task. This final project is about teaching writing recount text by using peer review technique to the eighth graders students of SMP N 1 Tambusai Utara in the academic year of 2022. The aim of this study is to find out how peer review technique can be implemented to improve students‟ skill in writing recount text. In order to achieve the objectives, an action research was designed and carried out in this study. The participants of this study were 38 students of class VIII D of SMP N 1 Tambusai Utara in the academic year of 2022. Questionnaire, observation sheet, and writing tests were used as the instruments for collecting data. The results of the study showed significant improvement of the students‟ achievement in writing recount text. It is proven by the average results in every test; pre test (63.00), formative test (74.29), and post test (79.50). The students‟ writing skill (organization, content, grammar, punctuation, and style and quality of expression) in each test improved, too. Moreover, the result of the observation sheet showed that peer review technique changed the students‟ learning behavior being better than before. Their enthusiasm during the learning process increased in each cycle. The analysis result of questionnaire showed that peer review technique was useful to most of students to improve their learning interest in writing recount text. Their perception changed positively after having the treatment. It meant that the use of peer review technique could ease their problem in writing English especially recount text based on the results of those research instruments, it can be concluded that using peer review technique as a learning technique gives the improvement to students‟ skill in writing recount text.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of the combination of Quartet and Dart games for teaching speaking. The main problem in teaching speaking of English as foreign language is how to stimulate and motivate students to speak. There are some media to teach speaking. This study proposes an alternative way for minimizing some problems that make the students hesitant to speak by using the combination of Quartet and Dart games. Quartet is a card game. There are totally 32 cards divided into 4 theme cards. Every card provides a brief description that will make the students read the description while waiting for the turn. The goal of the game is to collect a set of cards as many as possible. Dart game is an activity that is designed to challenge students to engage with the texts. The students are supposed to speak and to interpret the information carefully based on the Dart game. By using Quartet game, students will be able to speak well. It makes them speak based on the Quartet card. Quartet cards facilitate them with spoken vocabularies, grammar and structure of the text. Therefore, Dart game makes the students ready when they are going to express their ideas based on the instruction of Dart board. The objectives of this research are to find out whether the combination of Quartet and Dart games is effective to teach speaking to Junior High School‟s students and to find out whether the students are able to speak well by using the combination of Quartet and Dart games. The population was the eighth grade students of SMPS Yayasan Johan Sentosa Kabupaten Kampar in the academic year of 2014/2015. The number of population was 312 and sample was 36 students of VIII B for the try-out class and 37 students of VIII A as the experimental class. I used pre-experimental design in this research. When conducting the research, I used oral performance test to collect the data. The study showed that after the students were given treatment by using the combination of Quartet and Dart game, there was an increasing score from the pre- test and the post- test result about 72.86%. The tvalue was 27.69 and t-table was 1.69. Since the t-value is higher than the t-table, it can be concluded that the working hypothesis is accepted. It means that the combination of Quartet and Dart games is effective to improve students‟ speaking skills.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to know how is DRAW strategy applied in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text and in what ways are students‟ achievement improved after being taught by this strategy. The writer collected the data by using classroom action research. The action research was carried out in some steps. Those steps were pre-elimination test, spiraling the cycle of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The instruments that were used are tests, observation sheets and questionnaires. DRAW strategy is one of strategies that can be applied in teaching reading. D represents draw as in pull questions out of the box. R is for read to find the answer. A stands for attend as in listen to what classmates say as they discuss answers to drawn questions. And W represents write; students write answers to a selected few questions based on their notes from the class discussion. With DRAW, students work in small groups to discuss a text and respond to questions that involve critical thinking. In short, DRAW strategy encourages higher order thinking, motivates students in gaining information, promotes discussion, encourages listening, and promotes participation. The preelimination test in this classroom action research was used to know the students‟ achievement on reading comprehension of narrative text before conducting the research. In the pre-elimination test, the class‟ mean score was 45.17. In the cycle 1 test, the class‟ mean score was 62.17. And in the cycle 2 test, the class‟ mean score was 74.17. It can be concluded that the class‟ mean score from preelimination test to cycle 1 test improved 37.6% and 64.2% from pre-elimination test to cycle 2 test. In short, the result of each cycle prove that students‟ achievement of reading comprehension was getting better after this strategy was conducted in teaching and learning process. It can be concluded that by using DRAW strategy in reading class, students‟ reading comprehension can be improved. This strategy is a good technique to help students in comprehending English reading texts.

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh data yang menunjukan keaktifan dan prestasi siswa yang rendah untuk meningkatkan keaktifan dan prestasi belajar peneliti melakukan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) untuk mengetahui akar penyebab masalah dari aktifitas belajar peserta didik kelas VII SMP Negeri 3 Hulu Kuantan. Berdasarkan hal tersebut peneliti mencoba melaksanakan pembelajaran menggunakan model pembelajaran Inquiri Learning. Pembelajaran ini dilaksanakan bertujuan untuk mengetahui hal- hal apa saja yang terjadi didalam aktifitas belajar siswa dan bagaimana cara meningkatkan prestasi siswa pelajaran Bahasa Inggris materi DescriptiveText dengan menggunakan metode Inquiry Learning dapat berjalan sesuai yang diharapkan. Adapun pelaksanaan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar anak melalui perbaikan pada siklus 1 dan siklus 2 dengan melakukan desain prosedur perbaikan, pengamatan, teknik analisis data serta melakukan refleksi diri untuk pendidik. Dari hasil pengamatan pendidik, menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan anak dalam menggunakan metode Inquiri Learning.
