Abstract

Language variation is the variety of language used by society. Talking about language variation, it cannot be separated from the aspect of communication, both verbally and in writing. In this study, researchers will examine the use of language variation from the perspective of speakers on social media Twitter. Types of language variation from the perspective of speakers are divided into four, one of which is sociolect. Sociolect is further divided into eight, namely acrolect, basilect, vulgar, slang, colloquial, jargon, argot, and ken. Acrolect is a type of language variation that has a higher status. Basilect is a type of language variation that is considered to have a lower status or the opposite of acrolect. Vulgar is a type of language variation that contains rude or dirty words. Slang is a type of language variation that is specific and commonly used by teenagers and often changes. Colloquial is a type of spoken language variation that is commonly used daily. Jargon is a type of language variation that is limited in nature and is used only in certain groups or fields but is not closed. Argot is a type of language variation that is used in certain fields and is secretive, the opposite of jargon. Ken is a type of language variation used to request or influence and is full of falsehood. The purpose of this study is to analyze sociolect language variations based on the speaker’s perspective on Twitter social media, including posts, tweets, comments, and others. The research method used was qualitative to produce descriptive data, namely data that is in accordance with the results of the analysis. The data found a total of 20 data. There are 2 data for the type of acrolect, 3 data for the type of basilek, 6 data for vulgarity, 3 data for slang, 1 data for colloquial, 2 data for jargon, 2 data for argot and 1 data for ken. Thus, it can be concluded that there are many variations of language used on Twitter social media, both from teenagers and adults to the elderly, which are very diverse.

Abstract

This study examines the symbols of love and sacrifice in the poem Ishq az Awwal Chara Khuni Bud? by Jalaluddin Rumi using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory. This poem presents the paradox of divine love, which is accompanied by suffering from the beginning, depicting humanity's spiritual journey toward union with God. The purpose of this study is to identify the linguistic signs (signifier and signified) that form the symbols of love and sacrifice, and to explain the meaningful relationships established through Rumi's poetic language structure. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a Saussurean semiotic approach, which emphasizes the analysis of the relationship between the signifier and the signified, as well as the paradigmatic and syntagmatic relationships between signs. Data were obtained through a literature review of the poem's text in the Masnavi-i Ma'navi anthology and supporting literature. The results of the study indicate that the words ishq (love) and khûn (blood) are central to the symbolic meaning that forms a spiritual sign system. Love is interpreted as a transcendental force that encourages union with God, while blood symbolizes suffering and self-purification (fana'). The relationship between the signs indicates that the meaning of divine love is constructed through the opposition between beauty and pain, as Saussure explained that meaning emerges through the differences between signs. Through this analysis, it is revealed that Rumi's linguistic structure functions not only as an aesthetic tool but also as a spiritual path to divine meaning. The symbol of love in this poem serves as a catalyst for spiritual awareness and a reflection on the human journey toward spiritual perfection. This finding strengthens the relevance of Saussure's semiotic theory in uncovering the Sufi dimensions of Islamic literary works.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the tendency to assess linguistic intelligence with a greater emphasis on verbal activity, so that the potential of students with introverted tendencies cannot be fully seen and is likely to be misunderstood. This study aims to obtain an overview of the writing skills of students with introverted tendencies in grade V of SDN 191 Pekanbaru using a linguistic intelligence test. The research method used is descriptive quantitative with a sample of 7 students who have introverted tendencies at SDN 191 Pekanbaru. Data collection was conducted through a personality questionnaire using the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) scale and a writing skills test measured through five indicators, namely content relevance to the title, use of standard Indonesian spelling and grammar, choice of vocabulary, sentence structure, and neatness of writing. The results showed that the linguistic intelligence of students in terms of writing skills was in the fairly high category with an average score of 75.71. These findings prove that students with introverted tendencies have good linguistic intelligence, especially in terms of writing skills. This confirms that linguistic intelligence cannot be assessed solely based on speaking activity. Therefore, it can be said that the linguistic intelligence of students with introverted tendencies has developed quite well through writing activities as a form of language expression.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze classroom management problems in teaching English speaking skills at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi in the 2024/2025 academic year. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi, Gunungsitoli City, North Sumatra, from July to August 2025. The population of this study consisted of eighth-grade students, with one English teacher and 20 students selected as research participants. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected using observation checklists, semi-structured interviews, and documentation to obtain comprehensive information related to classroom management practices. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results of the study revealed that classroom management in teaching English speaking skills had not been implemented optimally. Several classroom management indicators, such as effective time management, disciplinary control, the use of instructional media, and group or pair management, were not consistently applied during speaking activities. These conditions resulted in a noisy classroom atmosphere and uneven student participation. The main factors influencing these problems included students’ low motivation and interest, differences in language proficiency levels, limited school facilities, lack of teaching media, and teachers’ difficulties in managing time and maintaining classroom discipline. In conclusion, effective classroom management plays a crucial role in supporting the success of English speaking instruction. Therefore, English teachers are expected to improve classroom discipline, utilize technology-based learning media, and manage instructional time more efficiently to enhance students’ speaking performance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of power pressure and their influence on the decision-making process of the main characters in the short stories Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell and Pelajaran Pertama Bagi Calon Politisi by Kuntowijoyo. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a power discourse analysis method based on Michel Foucault's theory. Data sources include narrative excerpts, dialogues, and actions of characters that represent power pressure in both short stories. Data collection techniques were carried out through intensive reading (close reading), while data analysis was carried out through the stages of classifying the forms of power pressure (social, ideological, psychological, and symbolic) and interpreting their influence on the characters' decisions. The results show that power pressure in both short stories is not always present in the form of physical coercion, but operates subtly through discourse, social norms, mass expectations, and normalized political practices. In the short story Shooting an Elephant, mass pressure and the demand to maintain a colonial image force the characters to make decisions that contradict their conscience. Meanwhile, in the short storyPelajaran Pertama Bagi Calon Politisi, ideological pressure and political pragmatism push the characters to sacrifice moral idealism for the sake of power. Thus, this study confirms that power works productively through the internalization of norms that shape ways of thinking and limit the choices that are considered possible, so that the character's decisions are the result of discursive pressure, not entirely free will.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social interaction between English teachers and the principal in the implementation of the Subject Teachers’ Meeting (MGMP) and its impact on teacher professional development. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Tuhemberua, North Nias Regency, from January to March 2025. The population of this study consisted of the school principal and English teachers who actively participated in MGMP activities, and all participants were involved as research subjects. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a field research design. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The data analysis technique used was qualitative inductive analysis, which included data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by triangulation to ensure data validity. The results indicate that social interaction between English teachers and the principal occurred through several forms, namely supervision, coordination, collaboration, facilitation, and motivation. These interactions generally functioned well and contributed positively to teacher professionalism, work motivation, and the implementation of instructional innovations in English language learning. However, several obstacles were identified, including limited time availability of the principal, insufficient facilities and budget support, and the absence of formal reward mechanisms for active teacher participation in MGMP activities. Despite these constraints, the interaction within the MGMP had a positive impact on strengthening teacher collaboration, improving instructional practices, and enhancing the quality of learning at school. This study is expected to contribute theoretically to studies on educational leadership and teacher professional communities, as well as practically to schools in optimizing the role of principals and MGMP as effective platforms for teacher professional development.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the perspectives of first-year students in the French Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, regarding the use of digital flashcards in learning French reading skills at the A1 level. The research was conducted in the French Language Education Study Program of the Faculty of Languages and Arts at Universitas Negeri Jakarta in 2025. The population of this study consisted of first-year students enrolled in the reading skills course (réception écrite), with a total sample of 62 students. The research instrument was a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire to measure students’ perceptions, needs, and experiences regarding the use of learning media in reading activities. The data were analysed using a quantitative descriptive method, and the percentage of students’ responses to each statement was calculated. The results show that 95% of students are aware that reading skills are an essential competence in learning French. However, 71% of students reported difficulties understanding French texts, particularly with new vocabulary, sentence structure, and overall comprehension. In addition, 89% of students stated that they need support for learning media to facilitate the reading process, and 87% reported feeling more helped when the material is presented through visual media.““Furthermore, 92% of students indicated that digital flashcards are needed for French language learning. Although the use of digital flashcards is still relatively rare in classroom practice, students demonstrate very positive perceptions of this medium. Therefore, the development of digital flashcards can be considered a relevant and potential solution to support the learning of reading skills for beginner-level French learners (A1).
