Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect simultaneously and partially of mastery of vocabulary and grammar of writing English narrative texts. The research method used is a survey with correlation and regression analysis that is by connecting data showing the mastery of vocabulary and grammar with From the result of data analysis of research, it can be concluded that: (1) there is a significant influence of mastery of vocabulary and grammar of the ability to write English narrative texts, this is proved by Sig = 0.000<0.05 and Fcount = 38.284; (2) there is a significant influence of mastery of the vocabulary of the ability to write English narrative texts, the value of Sig = 0.006 pieces of evidence this and tcount = 2.879; and (3) there is the significant influence of mastery of the grammar of the ability to write English narrative texts, this is proved by Sig = 0.000 and tcount = 4.379. Keywords: mastery of vocabulary, mastery of grammar, writing ability, English narrative text

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze white supremacy and structural racism in the film "The Shawshank Redemption". The method used is descriptive-qualitative to describe white supremacy and structural racism in the film. Data is obtained, analyzed and explained based on dialogues contained in the film, namely: 1) white supremacy that is analyzed from a) the appearances of the character using a sequence table, and b) visible glorification and invisible glorification using glorification dialogue table, and 2) structural racism, using binary opposition, namely positive and negative characterization of the characters. By the sequence table, the character that is predominant in the film is Andy Dufresne. From the glorification dialogue table, visible glorification gets the highest presentation while invisible glorification gets the lowest presentation. This shows that white supremacy exists in American film. As for structural racism, the negative characterization of the supporting characters is the highest while the negative characterization of the main character is the lowest. This shows that structural racism exists in American film.Key Words: American film; drama; white supremacy; structural racism.

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to know the Effects of Self-confidence and Vocabulary Mastery towards Students’ Speaking Skill – Survey at State Vocational High Schools, Tangerang City, Banten. The research populations were 600 students and the samples were 60 students taken from eleventh grade SMKN 7 and SMKN 9 vocational high schools at second semester of 2019/2020 academic year in Tangerang city. The instruments of the research were composed of 25 items of vocabulary test questions and 40 items questionnaire of students’ self-confidence. This research was designed and calculated using quantitative calculation. The major findings of the research indicates that the effects of self-confidence and vocabulary mastery towards the students’ speaking skill of eleventh grade Tangerang City Vocational High School is of high level category. The results of the research are as follow:1)There are any significant effects of self-confidence and vocabulary mastery jointly towards students’ speaking skill at the State Vocational High Schools in Tangerang City, Banten. It is proved by the value of Sig is 0.000<0.05 and the value of Ftest is 45.105. 2) There is a significant effect of self-confidence towards students’ speaking skill. It is proved by the value of Sig 0.042<0.05 and ttest of 2.075. 3) There is no significant effect of vocabulary mastery towards students’ speaking skill at the State Vocational High Schools in Tangerang City, Banten. It is proved by the value of Sig is 0.138>0.05 and ttest 1.502. Based on the research findings it can be recommended that speaking skill requires high level of self-confidence and adequate vocabulary mastery. Speaking skill is not only influenced by vast amount of vocabulary mastery but other influential factors at the state vocational high schools in Tangerang city such as high level of self-confidence.Keywords: Self-confident, Speaking Skill and Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to find out (1) The role of family and perception on school environment simultaneously towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students at East Jakarta. (2) The influence of family environment towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students at East Jakarta. (3) The influence of perception on school environment towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students at East Jakarta. The method that used in this research is survey with correlational technique. The population of the reaserh are all students of X level of SMK Negeri 5, 7 and 40 at East Jakarta totally 767 students. The samples are 89 students. The results of this research draw (1) there are significant simultaneously influences of family environment and perception on school environment towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students, East Jakarta. It is proven with sig score = 0,000 < 0,05 and Fcount = 31,406. The variables of family environment and perception on school environment simultaneously distribute 44,9 %  towards English learning achievement. (2) There is a significant influence of family environmet towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students, East Jakarta. It is proven with sig score sig = 0,001 < 0,05 and tcount = 3,312. (3) There is a significat influence of perception on school environment towards English learning achievement of SMK Negeri students, East Jakarta. It is proven with sig score = 0,000 < 0,05 and  tcount = 3,718. Key words : Family environment, Perception on school environment, English learning achievement

Abstract

This research has a purpose to analyze the theme elements inside the movie of WALL-E. The theme that is going to be analyzed are the socio-cultural and socio-psychological postmodernity. This research is designed by using the approach of qualitative argumentative research. The data for this research is collected directly from the movie itself, its screenplay and its novel adaptation. The form of the data collected is in narrative and descriptive text, dialogue, symbols and images. The result founds that the elements and themes of socio-cultural and socio-psychological postmodernity truly reigns the movie WALL-E; 1). The socio-cultural postmodernity depiction in this movie shows many aspects such as; the abrupt modern culture and technology, the modern world consumerism, the modern human relationship, and also the government negligence toward its own people. The portion of this theme is 54,8%. 2). The depiction of socio-psychological postmodernity in this movie shows the birth of the agent of change among the society and the abrupt modern world social awareness. The portion of this theme is 29,6%. 3). The pure postmodernity symbols (in a form of either the wordplay or the images used in the movie) that are also shown vividly has the portion of 15,6%. This means that the theme of socio-cultural postmodernity dominates the movie. But alas, due to the connection of every themes of the movie toward postmodern theme, in conclusion, the postmodernity is the theme that truly dominates the movie 100%.

Abstract

The challenge of making print ads is to choose the best marketing approach for the product or brand that is advertised. Another imaginative approach that can be used to render print ads in magazines is a metaphor. Using descriptive qualitative research using the theory of conceptual metaphor by Lakoff-Johnson as well as Keraf, this research searches for: a) what are some types of metaphorical and persuasive classifications that often appear? and b) what the relationship between metaphorical and persuasive language styles is? Based on data analysis, six metaphorical data and 15 persuasive data were found from 27 data from the Teen Vogue magazine, May 2012 edition. The results also showed that there were two structural metaphors, four ontology metaphors, and one orientation metaphor. The type of metaphor that often appears is the ontology metaphor. While the type of classification of persuasive methods that appear shows there are eight methods of suggestion, three methods of rationalization, two methods of compensation, one method of replacement, one method of projection.Key Words: semantic; advertisement; meaning; metaphor; persuasive

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the characters and moral values in the “Wonder” movie by Stephen Chbosky. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative which aims to describe the character and moral values in the Wonder” movie. Data obtained, analyzed, and explained based on dialogue data contained in the movie protagonist, antagonist, secondary, extras, round dan flat, and based on moral values: commitment to something greater than oneself, self-respect but with humility, self-discipline, and acceptance of personal responsibility, respect and caring for others, caring for other living things an environment. This shows the moral Value that dominates and wants to be conveyed is the Value of caring for others.

Abstract

Politeness strategy is a strategy that is done by someone to make his speech more politely. The politeness strategy can be found in daily conversation, a speech, debating events or from literary works, for instance films or novels. One of the literary works of concerning for this study is “Blade Runner 20489” film. The purpose of this paper is to describe the politeness strategies used in the film which can be found in the conversation between the characters. This research uses the theory of politeness strategy proposed by Lakoff (1973) and the theory of Maxim which proposed by Grice (1975). Lakoff classifies politeness strategies into three types: don’t impose, give options and be friendly. While, Grice proposed the theory of maxim into four types namely, maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner and maxim of relevance. The finding of this study indicates that the characters in Blade Runner 2049 employed all types of politeness strategies in relation to the maxim. It can be concluded that the used of politeness strategies in relation to the maxim can be found in this film.

Abstract

The research was done because more students met difficulties in writing. The objectives of the research are 1. To improve students’ writing ability in simple past tense through teaching strategy of error recognition; 2. To improve students’ writing ability in present perfect tense through teaching strategy of error recognition. The total subject of research is 43 students of two different schools. Techniques of collecting data are test, observation, document, and photograph. The research was in Classroom Action Research with two cycles and each cycle has four steps; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The result of analyzing data for students’ ability in simple past tense in cycle I, the “mean” was 60,8. The percentage was 23,37 %. In step II, the “mean” was 78,65 (more than KKM). The percentage of passing was 76,63%. (higher than 75 %). There were improvements from cycle I to cycle II. It is concluded that teaching Strategy of Error recognition in teaching and learning process can improve the students’ ability in writing simple past tense at private senior high school Serang. The result of test score for students’ ability in present perfect tense in step I,  the “mean” was 61,35 (less than KKM). The percentage of passing was 23,69 % (less than 75 % minimal mastery level criterion of passing). In step II, the “mean” was 78,25 (more than KKM). The percentage of passing was 76,63 % (higher 75 % minimal mastery level criterion of passing). There were improvements from step I to step II. It is concluded that teaching strategy of error recognition in teaching and learning process can also improve the students’ ability in writing present perfect tense at private senior high school Serang.

Abstract

Abstract: effects of  students perception for school evironment and parenting toward english academic achievement.  The expanatory survey method was aimed at describing the effects of students perception of students for school environment and parenting toward english academic achievement. From the population of all the students of Governmet Junior High Schools  in Citeureup Bogor Jawa Barat (820 people), a sampel of 90  students were randomly selected. The data were collected using a questionnaire and then  analyzed statistically using regretion SPSS 22.0 analyses. The results showed that school evironment and parenting  influential toward english academic achievement. Keywords: English academic achievement, School evironment, parenting Abstrak: pengaruh persepsi siwa atas lingkungan sekolah dan pola asuh orang tua terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini  bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh persepsi lingkungan sekolah dan pola asuh orang tua terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian mengunakan metode survey, dengan populasi siswa SMP Negeri di Citeureup kabupaten Bogor Jawa Barat. Dengan teknik sampling acak proporsional dipreroleh sampel sebesar 90 orang. Teknik anallisis regresi dengan mengunakan program aplikasi SPSS 22.0. hasil penelitian membuktikan bahawa lingkungan sekolah dan pola asuh berpengaruh terhadap presatasi belajar bahasa Inggris. Kata Kunci: Prestasi  belajar bahasa Inggris, lingkungan sekolah, pola asuh
