Abstract

This study aims at finding the use of life metaphors in tetralogy Laskar Pelangi (hereinafter TLP). Data were analyzed in the framework of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) by using a descriptive qualitative approach. We found 21 life metaphors in TLP and the finding shows that the conceptual metaphor of life as a target domain is mapped into several diverse source domains, and they are: life is a fluid in a container, life is a journey, life is a living organism, life is a precious possession, life is dedication to others, life is a struggle, life is guidance, life is war, and life is hard work. It can be concluded that TLP is rich with the use of metaphors in describing the cultural events of the Malays in detail. The way how the Malay master the problems in their lives, how they see and understand the world, is made clear by their language, which is reflected in conceptual metaphors. The results of this research support the idea that metaphors are not just rhetorical devices to say something more stylistically but they are conceptual in nature and its existence can be different in each culture.

Abstract

Utilization of digital library resources in supporting the writing of scientific papers among teachers of SMK 10 Tangerang is still not practiced. Based on the results of the initial questionnaire, it was found out that the vocational high school teachers did not know much about how to find or utilize electronic library resources to support writing scientific papers. Therefore, this community service activity by UNINDRA aims to improve the knowledge and abilities of teachers in searching, utilizing, and compiling library resources in online databases systematically so that they are able to apply this knowledge in writing scientific papers for publication in journals. The method used is the lecture and question and answer method. It can be concluded that the PKM activities in SMKN 10 Tangerang in providing guidance on writing scientific papers, especially regarding the use of library resources, can be well received and followed by the teachers. For further activities, further complete trainings are needed in the form of writing scientific articles so that teachers are able to write papers for national journals independently with maximum utilization of library resources.

Abstract

Abstract

The present study attempts to analyze the word-formation of nonce words usually used by the youth and the function of its usage in online newspapers in Indonesia. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. Research objects were nonce words in the form of basic words and phrases in various texts in online newspapers between March to September 2020 as many as 15 samples. The result of the study shows that the usage of nonce words in online newspapers in Indonesia can still be said to be marginal and nonce words appear mostly in headlines and less in body text because the language of the newspaper has its characteristics and is tied to the rules of the language of the mass media. The function of nonce words in online newspapers corresponds to the criteria of Heyne and Vollmer (2016) which are textual, stylistic, and reference. Nonce words in the form, and meaning, or both with novel values, are created from different needs and are used in various areas of communication. The formation of nonce words reflects the social conditions that are determined by developments in a country. Keywords: Nonce words; language of newspapers; word-formation; Indonesian
