Abstract

The present study was conducted to respond to the students’ low ability to comprehend narrative text. This was likely due to their lack of reading interest and vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the study was aimed to find out the effect of reading interest and vocabulary mastery collectively on the ability of comprehending narrative text. The research question, then, formulated as: How can the students’ lack of reading interest and vocabulary mastery affect their ability to comprehend narrative text? Students’ reading interest in Indonesia is very low. This is because students today still ignore the importance of reading. The low reading interest in Indonesia are caused by various factors, such as environment, online game, and social media. Students’ vocabulary mastery in reading will affect their ability in comprehending and understanding the writer’s message through the writer’s writing. The research design used was classroom action. The subjects were first-year level students from state senior high school of 2, 3 and 4 Cirebon. The research method used was multiple regression technique. Questionnaires were administered to 60 participants. As a sample, the research used proportional random sampling technique. The data were collected using a questionnaire and a quiz then analyzed statistically using descriptive statistics such as mean, median, standard deviation, and standard inferential. It was aimed to find correlation coefficient with t testing using SPSS 20. The result of the implementation showed that: (1) there was a significant effect of both reading interest and vocabulary mastery on students’ ability to comprehend narrative text at state senior high schools in Cirebon. It was showed by the point of Sig = 0.000 < 0.05 and Fcount = 14.928. (2). There was a significant effect of reading interest on students’ ability to comprehend narrative text at state senior high schools in Cirebon. It was showed by the point of Sig = 0.005 < 0.05 and tcount = 2.932. (3). There was a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students’ ability to comprehend narrative text at senior high schools in Cirebon. It was showed by the point of Sig = 0.033 < 0.05 and tcount = 2.181. Keywords: reading interest; vocabulary mastery; narrative text

Abstract

The study examined the English text book “Stop Bullying Now” Published By Kemendikbud RI based on the Cunningsworth criteria. The study found out the quality of the English textbook “Stop Bullying Now” for class XI. The method employed in this study is qualitative descriptive. The study focuses the textbooks to fit the criteria based on Cunningsworth theory. In data-mining researcher using documentary analysis. Researcher analyzed 3 chapters of the 5 chapters of the textbook Published By Curriculum and Book Center, Balitbang, Kemendikbud. Studies show that the textbooks “Stop Bullying Now” are as good as the Cunningsworth criteria. It meets the criteria of the Cunningsworth and includes a good English textbook because it contains language content, skills, and topics. The study examined the English text book “Stop Bullying Now” Published By Kemendikbud RI based on the Cunningsworth criteria. The study found out the quality of the English textbook “Stop Bullying Now” for class XI. This study can be used by teachers as a guide in teaching so that teachers can use this textbook for school teaching activities. Abstract

Pronunciation is one of language micro-skill that should be mastered in order to create a clear and effective communication. This article aims to provide a brief review of some common mistakes in pronunciation at various L2 speakers by focusing into researches on related topic. By noticing the problem that occurred, English teachers may develop a better plan for future to avoid the same mistakes. The similarity between non-native learners, such as Chinese, Indonesian, Palestinian, Turkish and Vietnamese, is they tend to make mistakes in sound that do not exist in their first language.

Abstract

In general, literature is a phenomenon that is expressed through words, which in particular can be presented in the form of works in the form of movie. This study aims to determine, analyze, and describe the character and personality of the main character in the movie entitled “wonder woman” by focusing on the structure of the personality of the id, ego and super ego. This research analyzes the personality of Diana Prince as a main character of the Wonder Woman movie using Sigmund Freud's theory. This research uses a qualitative descriptive research method because the data taken come from movie scripts and movie video. The results of this study are the main character named Diana Prince has an id personality which is based on innate instincts from birth, the ego structure of Diana Prince's personality in carrying out actions according to the norms applied in society. Furthermore, the super ego shown in Diana Prince with her concern for the people around her. The personality that often appears in Diana Prince is the superego that makes her a woman by making many good contributions to be a hero in saving the world.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students about learning using the e-learning platform and measure students' perceptions about learning using the e-learning platform. At one of the private University in Cirebon. This research uses qualitative research with case study design. The data source of this research is a data source in the form of primary or main data sources where data collection is obtained through questionnaire and interview. To analyze the data is done through three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and verification or conclusion. Then the triangulation of data and sources is used as a means of checking the validity of a data. The results of the study illustrate that first, the positive perception that students have of learning through the E-Learning platform during the Covid-19 pandemic, that learning using the E-Learning platform is effective, the ELearning platform can assist students in carrying out online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. Second, the E-Learning platform in online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic is very useful for continuing to learn where students want to learn the media provided by lecturers such as the e-Learning platform, the use of the E-Learning platform is useful for online learning for now learning is done online. by using the E-Learning platform so that students can continue to learn.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate English students’ learning motivation in participating online learning through e-learning class at one senior high school in Cirebon and to know the affecting factor of students’ motivation. Qualitative research was used in this research which descriptive qualitative as research design. The source of data was the main data which in the collecting of data was obtained through observation, interview and documentation process. To analysis the data was done through there steps namely data reduction, data display and verification, then the data triangulation and source were used as a means to checking the validity of the data. The results of the research described that the students have a decrease in their motivation for learning because during Covid-19 Pandemic students are more comfortable and enthusiastic in learning by face to face learning rather than online learning through e-learning class, the students have difficulty in understanding the material, learning become less interactive, the delivery of material become less varied and the lack of the teacher in response the students was considered the dominant factors affects English students’ motivation during Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the application of mind mapping techniques in teaching speaking at 7th grade IN EFL CLASSROOM IN ONE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN PABEDILAN. The object of research is only focused on the learning process, while the subject of this research is the English teacher at the school. During the learning activities carried out in 2 observations and 4 meetings. The first meeting only observed the teacher applying mind mapping in the speaking class. After the second meeting, the researcher prepared an observation checklist to find out how the teacher applied the mind mapping. The third meeting was an interview with the teacher concerned and the last meeting confirmed the results of data processing in several previous meetings while saying goodbye. This study used qualitative research methods. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews and documentation. In the introduction, the researcher observed the teacher teaching process and then proceeded to the next meeting. Based on the data obtained from observations, it can be seen that the application of mind mapping techniques applied by English teacher so far is quite good, because the techniques used by the teacher are in accordance with the theory proposed by Buzan (2004). The results of the interviews showed that the obstacles in the learning process using mind mapping techniques were on the students themselves. Not all students have the same learning style, some are fast, medium and slow. Therefore, they often have to take different ways to understand the same information or course.

Abstract

An instructional material becomes one of the most crucial factors in determining the success of learning process. Textbook as one of the kind of instructional materials poses its vital role in assisting teachers in the learning process. Acting as a cohesive device in discourse analysis, thematic structure and progression pattern analysis have been popularly used in analyzing texts’ theme-rheme structure and its deployment pattern. This study centered on analyzing the theme rheme structure and progression patterns on some specific reading texts. A grade X english textbook endorsed by Ministry of Education and Culture has been chosen to be the object of analysis. Out of 17 existing passages within the textbook, author has purposively selected three reading texts with different genre to be the data of the research. To begin the investigation, each of the selected text was broke down into clauses and then analyzed the theme and rheme within each clause. Progression patterns analysis was done by analyzing the deployment pattern of themes and rhemes within the texts. The investigation uncovered unmarked themes on single clause level became the most dominating theme among others. The themes showed up 61 times and occupied 44.53% of all themes occurrences. At the bottom two rarest theme occurrences are marked and interpersonal themes with a percentage of 2.94% and 0.74%. Ultimately, concerning the cohesiveness of the text, all four progression patterns occurred within the text and 166 items of cohesive devices indicating reference & repetition were found well-distributed in all three texts.

Abstract

This paper aims to find out the level of reading anxieties experienced by senior high school students andto identify the major factors that influence anxieties experienced by the students. Mix method research design was applied in this research. There are 36 students employed in this research. The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The data were analyzed within two phases, the first is quantitatively in order to find out the level of reading anxiety experienced by senior high school student and the second is qualitatively in order to identify the major factor triggering the reading anxiety. The results of the research reveals that level reading anxiety is in high level with score 68.08. The result also shows that students experienced high level of anxiety in all category, namely worry about effect (71.85), fear of making error (60.69), unfamiliar culture (70.42), unfamiliar topic (62.5), unknown vocabulary (70.28) which all category is in the high level. Thus, the major factor triggering reading anxiety experienced by senior high school students is worry about effect.

Abstract

In writing descriptive composition students still experience deficiencies, where some students still find it difficult to write. The purpose of study is to find out the students' abilities in writing descriptive composition and what that difficulties students face in writing descriptive composition in Vocational High School. This research was conducted by qualitative research using descriptive method. The subject of this research are students of class X OTKP in one of private school in Cirebon. There are 19 students in the class and researcher choses 14 students with a random technique. Furthermore, the researcher used student writing and interviews as instruments. The researcher analyzed the data, and the researcher found some finding in the field. First, it was found that the students' ability in writing descriptive compositions was at a low level. This is supported by the second finding, the results of interviews with students, namely that students' difficulties are the generic structure of descriptive composition which consists of describing objects in detail and grammar. In addition, most students have difficulty in arranging words into sentences and writing the correct spelling of words. In addition, the lack of vocabulary makes them write many repetitions of words in their writing.
