Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to undertake a comprehensive and in-depth examination and analysis of the discourse surrounding Islam Nusantara, considering the evolutionary trajectory of ideas introduced by Gus Dur concerning the indigenization of Islam, spanning from the 1980s to the present-day concept of Islam Nusantara promoted by PBNU. As a result, the study endeavors to achieve a profound understanding and knowledge of the Nusantara Islamic civilization, which places utmost value on pluralism, tolerance, and the principle of rahmatan lil alamin, embodying compassion for all of creation. The research methodology employed in this study entails a rigorous review of relevant literature, drawing on diverse scholarly works exploring Islam Nusantara and tracing the origins of these ideas. Particular emphasis is placed on analyzing Gus Dur’s perspectives regarding the indigenization of Islam. The study’s findings reveal a significant correlation between the ideas espoused by Gus Dur and several noteworthy phenomena observed in contemporary Indonesian Islam. Firstly, a prevalent misinterpretation of jihad exists within specific segments of the Muslim community, leading to the emergence of explicit terrorist movements, such as ISIS and its sympathizers in Indonesia. Secondly, ongoing violations of religious freedom and beliefs continue to persist within the country. Thirdly, there is an expanding range of religious narratives and discourses prevalent in society that tend to lean towards radicalism and exhibit an aversion to diversity. Consequently, this study substantiates the notion that Islam Nusantara holds the potential to serve as a solid foundation for constructing a framework of religious moderation, serving as a crucial response to the progressively pervasive discourse and practice of religious radicalism within society

Abstract

Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism is unjustified. In fact, the political change after 1998 and the increasing influence of religion combined with an intensified process of globalization have led to socio-cultural vicissitudes inIndonesia beyond which we can only estimate what future patterns of orientation the population will have. Based on data from informal conversations, interviews and participant observation, it will be argued that, notwithstanding considerable variations, Muslim Indonesians uphold not solely negative but ambivalent images of the West and that in comparison with and opposition to the „Self‟ or „Own‟ the West is examined as one of many frames of reference by which modernity is negotiated and can be put into practice. Many interlocutors overcame the binary of East and West by envisioning that Indonesia could combine the advantages of both, the Own and the Foreign in order to step into a desirable future.

Abstract

One of the human potentials that is very valuable as well as distinguishes it from other creatures is reason. The messages of Allah, both expressed through the redaction of His revelation in the Koran and implied in His creation, can be revealed by reason, so that the purpose of law (Maqashid al-Sharia) contained in it can be known and manifested in life real. The use of reason in the area of legal work, let alone to determine or stipulate a law, became a long debate for Islamic thinkers after the Prophet Muhammad died. Even though they agree that the third source of Islamic law is reason (al-Ra'yu) but in their ijtihad the mujtahids use reason in different portions and methods. Some use it very large, and some are very small portions. In general, the jurisdiction can be distinguished in the form of at-Ta'abbud, namely the legal area which is the right of Allah (haqqullah) and at-Ta'aqqul, namely the legal area which is the right of Insan (haqqul Ibad / insan /) to think about it. In the latter area it is the authority of reason.

Abstract

One of the social problems that is now emerging in Indonesia is the decline of Muslim social integration. This article wants to discuss the Muslim social integration within different social groups in Indonesia in the pre-independence period in order to become an example for Muslim integration today. The method used in writing is a literature-based qualitative research method, with a theoretical approach to Muslim social integration with non-Muslim communities. This article finds that, in the perspective of horizontal integration, Indonesian Muslim societies generally integrate with different communities, varying ethnicity, race, socio-political and economic interests, especially with different religions. And this is the reality of mainstream social in Indonesia at the pre-colonial period and the colonial period. However, the Muslim social integrity, can not be called an absolute social reality. The Muslim horizontal social integration in Indonesia is dynamic. The social integration of Muslims in Indonesia with different societies is also not an independent entity.
