Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of UN peacekeeping operations on the political and social stability of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Since the 1960s, the UN has intervened through missions like ONUC, MONUC, and MONUSCO to stabilize the country. However, the DRC continues to face significant challenges, particularly in the eastern regions. The study addresses a critical gap in understanding how these interventions have affected economic development, diplomatic relations, and public perception of sovereignty consolidation. The primary aim of this study is to examine the economic consequences of UN peacekeeping operations, analyze how these missions have influenced the DRC's bi/multilateral diplomatic relations, and explore public opinion regarding the UN’s role in reinforcing national sovereignty. The study seeks to provide insights into the long-term effects of peacekeeping on the DRC’s stability. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data. A sample of 300 respondents, including local populations, government officials, and international actors, was surveyed. Data collection involved interviews, surveys, and document analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS to examine patterns and relationships. The findings reveal that UN peacekeeping missions have had mixed outcomes. While they have contributed to reducing direct conflict, they have not significantly boosted economic development. Diplomatic relations remain complicated due to varying perceptions of the UN’s extended presence. Public opinion is divided, with many questioning the overall effectiveness of the UN in restoring sovereignty. The study concludes that while UN interventions have been essential in mitigating conflict, their long-term economic and diplomatic impacts require further attention. Strengthening local governance and fostering economic development in collaboration with the UN are recommended. Future research should focus on the sustainability of peacekeeping missions and their potential role in driving economic growth in conflict-prone areas.

Abstract

In line with National Centre for Women Development, Nigerian women constituted nearly half of the population of the country (49.31%). Nigeria had recorded low participation of women in politics, both in elective and appointive positions. In the history of Africa, particularly in Nigerian political trend, it was obvious that, the major roles performed by women in the society were domestic and supernatural affairs. The under representation of women in political participation in Nigeria had gained prominence from pre-colonial era till date. Recently, according to “National Centre for Women Development” on women’s participation in Nigerian politics, women’s involvement in active politics started gaining prominence from fourth republic. Over two decades, Nigeria had enjoyed uninterrupted democratic governance, which involved 6.7% of women participated in politics, which was below the global average of 22.5%. In the immediate past administration of President Muhammad Buhari, only seven (7) out of forty three (43) ministers in his executive cabinet were women representing 16.7%. In the ninth National Assembly, women have nineteen seats out of 469 members representing 10.9% in National Assembly (2019-2023). This paper was designed to critically assess the rate of women in political participation in Nigeria. The researcher recommended that, women should be encouraged to actively involve in political participation in their various societies by the people of their constituency. Federal Government through the National Assembly should continue to review the electoral act to give waivers to women candidacy by encouraging them to show more interest in politics through advocacy on gender equality.

Abstract

The Aboakyir festival costumes present a colourful ambience and a panoply of varied colour schemes. The different colour ways and schemes presented by the parade of costumes are always a source of colour inspiration and creative visual sensibilities. The paper attempts to analyze the colours of Effutu festival costumes and their application in contemporary textile design. The study presents inspirational colour palettes on the basis of inspiration from the varied colour schemes presented and applied to contemporary textile designs. Ten (10) colour palettes are generated from different locations, scenes, and activities of the Effutu Aboakyir festival. With the help of the CorelDRAW software, each selected scenery generates a unique colour palette worth applying in contemporary textile designing activities. Each colour palette is applied to textile designs and checked for suitability. Findings revealed that the unique sceneries produce unadulterated colour palettes that could not be easily achieved by other sources of colour inspiration. It was also noted the colours presented on the colour palettes created successful harmonious colour combinations when applied to suitable contemporary textile designs fit for varied applications.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the difficulties Japanese language learners face in understanding and mastering the meanings of kanji characters, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the image-based visual method in helping learners comprehend and master kanji. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method was employed in this study. The data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests administered to 12 Japanese language learners at Universitas Harapan Medan. The results indicate that prior to the image-based visual learning method, students encountered difficulties in mastering the meanings of kanji characters. The pre-test scores revealed challenges in recalling the meanings of kanji, the correct order of strokes, and the pronunciation associated with kanji. However, after the implementation of the image-based visual learning method, there was a significant improvement in the post-test scores. The average score increased from 37.92 in the pre-test to 80.42 in the post-test. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Japanese language learners struggle to master kanji meanings. However, the image-based visual learning method proved effective in helping them understand and master kanji, with significant improvements observed. This learning method helped learners recall and understand kanji characters and overcome the difficulties they faced previously.

Abstract

This systematic literature review (SLR) examines the limitations of Artificial Intelligence (AI) writing assistant tools and their implications for education. The study identifies six critical shortcomings: (1) lack of academic rigor, (2) insufficient knowledge base, (3) inability to synthesize complex ideas, (4) absence of human cognitive abilities, (5) limited adaptability, and (6) questionable originality. The review highlights the challenges of engaging students with diverse emotional and cognitive characteristics, supported by statistical insights into emotional and cognitive engagement. It explores the ethical considerations and potential impacts of AI technologies on academic integrity and credibility. The findings also encompass a comparative analysis of AI models like Gemini and ChatGPT, their applications in various educational contexts, and their effectiveness in tasks such as feedback mechanisms and assessment techniques. Findings underscore the tools' potential to enhance engagement and comprehension while emphasizing the need for balanced integration with human input to preserve academic credibility. This research highlights AI's transformative yet limited role in education, advocating for responsible use and continuous evaluation.

Abstract

The study aims at explaining the multimodal analysis in children’s nutrition advertisement. It is about what meaning can be conveyed through the advertisement’s signs as the combination of video, text, sounds, and others. The research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method, in which the writer only explains all phenomena without using any number. In doing the analysis, the writer uses the theories of Systemic Functional Linguistics by (Halliday, 1994), theory by Anstey & Bull (2010) that focussed on modes in the video advertisement, and Multimodal theory by Kress & van Leeuwen’s (2001). The results have found that the new Nutrilon Royal advertisement has shown a good purpose of persuade its customers to think about giving good nutrition to their kids in early time. The use of the narrative with soft voice has caused the viewers to pay their attention to the advertisement. The use of video of children can be the evidence of how good the product is. The narrator speaks in a warm, encouraging tone, fostering trust, and emotional connection. The use of the certain words engages parents personally, implying that the new Nutrilon Royal plays a vital role in every child's development. The advertisement is structured to move smoothly from one scene to another, reflecting the continuity of a child’s growth journey. The combination of spoken narration, music, and visuals ensures cohesion, with each mode supporting the overarching message of healthy development starting with good nutrition.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of expressive speech acts, analyze their functions, and interpret their meanings in the Indonesian web series '17 Forever'. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes dialogue fragments collected through the listening method and categorized based on type, function, and meaning. The findings reveal eight types of expressive speech acts, including direct, indirect, literal, and non-literal variations. Ten functions were identified, such as praising, complimenting, complaining, congratulating, saying thank you, blaming, apologizing, expressing anger, expressing sadness, showing sympathy, and mocking. Additionally, the analysis uncovered ten meanings, including insulting, praising, complaining, congratulating, saying thank you, blaming, apologizing, expressing anger, expressing sadness, showing sympathy, and mocking. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of expressive speech acts in Indonesian web series and provides a foundation for future studies in similar contexts.

Abstract

Divorce can only be carried out based on a judge's decision in an Islamic Court session (Article 115 of the Compilation of Islamic Law). However, in practice, many divorces occur outside of court, creating confusion in society. This is particularly challenging for the Acehnese community, which follows the Shafi’i school of thought, as they are required to abide by laws that do not always align with religious edicts. The fatwas issued by the Aceh Consultative Assembly (MPU), for instance, often conflict with rulings from the Mahkamah Syar'iyah on matters such as the validity of triple talaq pronounced in a single instance. The research questions in this study are: 1) What is the opinion of MPU Aceh Tamiang on the implementation of MPU Aceh Fatwa Number 02 of 2015 on Talaq? 2) What is the perspective of judges at the Mahkamah Syar’iyah Kuala Simpang on the implementation of MPU Aceh Fatwa Number 02 of 2015 on Talaq in court rulings? This research is a Comparative Law Study using both comparative and sociological or philosophical approaches. The research findings indicate that: 1) MPU Aceh Tamiang supports the implementation of the MPU Aceh Fatwa by referring to Qanun Aceh Number 2 of 2009 concerning MPU, which mandates that district/city MPUs are responsible for upholding MPU Aceh’s fatwas. 2) Judges at the Mahkamah Syar’iyah Kuala Simpang acknowledge MPU’s authority to issue fatwas based on legal mandate. However, the implementation of MPU Aceh Fatwa Number 02 of 2015 on Talaq cannot serve as a legal basis for judges in Mahkamah Syar’iyah decisions, as fatwas are not part of the legal hierarchy. For a fatwa to be considered as a source of legal reasoning, it must be codified as a Qanun (regional regulation) in Aceh.

Abstract

English is an international language, which has been used by many countries as a second language. To be able to speak English, everyone needs a lot of vocabulary. Vocabulary can be acquired using online games. Online games are widely used by students. The aim of this research is to find out whether there is an influence of the use of online games on the acquisition of English vocabulary for AL-ULUM SMA students, who are members of the extracurricular the flag-raising troop (Pasukan Pengibar Bendera or Paskibra). Researchers chose this topic because researchers saw that many students played online games in a free time. This research uses Psycholinguistic theory by Levelt. And behaviorism theory of language acquisition according to Skinner. The method in this research is a survey method with a quantitative approach. Researchers used a questionnaire as a research instrument. And some of these questions use a Likert scale. The results of this research show that it is true that online games have an influence on the acquisition of English vocabulary for AL-ULUM High School students. This can be seen from the answer data given by respondents, which has been explained briefly by the researcher. And with that result, it can be proven that the hypothesis “The use of online games has influenced the acquisition of English vocabulary for AL-ULUM High School students" is correct and accepted.

Abstract

This study investigates the morphological complexity of the ML, focusing specifically on its system of infixation spoken primarily in Timor-Leste. The ML features are unique use of affixes, such as ‘tuli,’ ‘geri,’ ‘ta,’ and ‘tau,’ which significantly alter the meaning and grammatical structure of verbs. These infixes mark causality, reciprocity, aspect, and action completion. The research adopted a qualitative approach, utilizing elicitation and semi-structured interviews with two to four native speakers as the primary data collection methods. The study reveals systematic patterns in infix placement and its impact on verb meaning, such as transforming verbs into fatal actions, signaling attempted actions, or indicating mutual actions. The findings highlight ML's sophisticated verbal morphology and its potential contribution to Papuan linguistic typology. The study suggests further research into dialectal variations, as well as the development of resources for language preservation and teaching.
