Abstract

Abstract

The urgency of this study lies in its critical examination of how gendered language functions as a tool of patriarchal control in Jamaica Kincaid’s Girl (1978), revealing how linguistic practices shape female identity, social expectations, and power relations within a cultural context. This study examines gendered language in Jamaica Kincaid’s short story Girl (1978) by focusing on how linguistic forms function as mechanisms of social control over women. Rather than treating gendered language as a general phenomenon, this research specifically analyzes the dominance of imperative sentences, repetition, and normative diction used by the mother figure to construct female identity within a patriarchal cultural framework. Using a qualitative descriptive method and feminist discourse analysis, the study identifies how directives and prohibitions directed at the female subject reflect expectations of obedience, domestic responsibility, and moral discipline. The findings reveal that language in Girl does not merely mirror gender norms but actively reproduces them by normalizing patriarchal values through everyday maternal discourse. The study concludes that Kincaid’s Girl demonstrates how language operates as an ideological tool that shapes and limits women’s identities, highlighting the importance of feminist linguistic analysis in literary studies.

Abstract

The urgency of this research lies in examining language and gender representation in The Story of an Hour to uncover how Kate Chopin challenges patriarchal ideology and constructs female autonomy through narrative discourse. This study examines how linguistic features construct gender representation in Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour. While previous studies have largely focused on feminist themes and ideological interpretations, limited attention has been paid to the linguistic mechanisms through which gender ideology is articulated. Addressing this gap, this study applies feminist linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis to explore how language reflects women’s emotional experience and social position within a nineteenth-century patriarchal context. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through documentation of the short story text and analyzed through close reading. Linguistic features such as lexical choices, figurative language, imagery, narrative voice, and discourse structure were examined. The findings reveal that female experience is represented through indirect and emotive language, with freedom portrayed as an internal and temporary realization. Narrative voice confines women’s expression to private consciousness, while authoritative discourse reinforces patriarchal interpretations. Nevertheless, narrative irony enables subtle resistance. Overall, this study concludes that gender ideology in The Story of an Hour is not simply conveyed through thematic content but is fundamentally constructed through linguistic choices, narrative voice, and discourse structures. By foregrounding language as a site of power and resistance, the study highlights the crucial role of linguistic analysis in uncovering how gendered meanings are produced, sustained, and subtly challenged in literary texts.

Abstract

In contemporary Indonesian media, code-mixing has become an increasingly prominent linguistic practice, particularly in entertainment programs where language is creatively manipulated to engage audiences. This study aims to analyze the forms and social functions of Indonesian–English code-mixing used by comedians in the television program Lapor Pak!, as well as to examine how these linguistic structures are strategically employed as instruments for creating humor. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data sourced from three selected videos on the @7comedy YouTube channel through observation and note-taking techniques. The analysis is grounded in Pieter Muysken’s typology of code-mixing, Hoffman’s and Wardhaugh’s sociolinguistic theories, and Salvatore Attardo’s Incongruity Theory. The findings reveal that code-mixing in the program is dominated by the insertion type, followed by alternation and congruent lexicalization. These linguistic choices serve various sociolinguistic functions, including affective functions to express emotion, phatic functions to maintain social interaction, and the use of technical terms to build specific character personas. Comedians strategically use English not only as a communication tool but also as a comedic instrument. Humor arises from the incongruity between the formal or serious nature of the English terms and the absurd or trivial context of the comedic sketches. Overall, this study demonstrates that Indonesian English code-mixing in Lapor Pak! is not a random linguistic practice but a deliberate comedic strategy that simultaneously constructs humor, negotiates social identity, and reflects contemporary sociolinguistic dynamics.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between lifestyle patterns and language change among young adults using a sociolinguistic approach. Language change is viewed as a socially driven process influenced by everyday interaction, media exposure, and engagement with contemporary trends. The objectives of the study include describing the lifestyle characteristics of young adults, identifying patterns of language use in daily interaction, and analyzing the contribution of lifestyle to linguistic variation and evolution. A descriptive quantitative method was employed, using a structured online questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument. Data were collected over a three-week period from 31 participants aged 18–26 from diverse social backgrounds. The findings indicate that participants with more dynamic and modern lifestyles tend to exhibit higher levels of linguistic variation, including frequent use of informal language, code-mixing, and the adjustment of speaking styles according to interlocutors and social situations. The results also indicate variation in language use across domains, particularly in family and social contexts, reflecting the respondents’ sociolinguistic awareness. These findings demonstrate that language change among young adults does not occur randomly but is closely linked to lifestyle, patterns of social interaction, and exposure to digital media. This study contributes to the field of sociolinguistics by providing empirical evidence of the role of lifestyle as a key social factor influencing language change and by emphasizing the importance of everyday social practices in shaping contemporary language use.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of expressive code-mixing in Maudy Ayunda’s YouTube discourse, focusing on how bilingual language practices function as a medium for emotional expression and reflective storytelling in digital communication. Grounded in sociolinguistic theory, this research employs a qualitative descriptive method and adopts typology of code-mixing, which categorizes code-mixing into Insertion, Alternation, and Congruent Lexicalization. The data were collected from selected reflective videos on Maudy Ayunda’s YouTube channel and analyzed through transcription, identification, and contextual interpretation of code-mixed utterances. The findings reveal that Insertion is the most dominant type of code-mixing, accounting for 56.25% of the data, followed by Alternation at 43.75%, while Congruent Lexicalization was not found. These results indicate that Indonesian functions as the matrix language, with English serving as a complementary linguistic resource. Beyond structural patterns, the study demonstrates that code-mixing performs a significant expressive function. English elements are frequently employed to articulate emotions such as stress, relief, self-awareness, motivation, and emotional reassurance. Insertion is commonly used to intensify emotional states and describe complex psychological experiences, whereas Alternation allows the speaker to deliver reflections, evaluations, and conclusions more emphatically. The study concludes that code-mixing in Maudy Ayunda’s YouTube discourse extends beyond linguistic variation and operates as a strategic expressive tool that fosters emotional engagement and audience connection. This research contributes to sociolinguistic studies by highlighting the expressive and pragmatic roles of code-mixing in digital bilingual communication.

Abstract

This study is urgent because it reveals how linguistic variation in Sherlock Holmes constructs and represents character identity through a Third Wave sociolinguistic perspective, thereby enriching our understanding of the relationship between language, identity, and social meaning in literary works. This study explores how Sherlock Holmes’ character identity is intricately formed through linguistic variation, using the Third Wave sociolinguistic framework as the primary analytical tool. This research bridges classical literary studies with modern sociolinguistic perspectives, which view identity as a performative and strategic social practice rather than a fixed psychological trait. The objective of this research is to examine how identity is constructed and performed as a strategic social practice by integrating classical literary analysis with contemporary sociolinguistic perspectives, rather than treating identity as a fixed psychological attribute. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this study analyzes 45 selected excerpts from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” with specific attention to technical registers, formal stance, and stylistic variation. The findings reveal a consistent pattern of “stylistic practice” where Holmes utilizes specific scientific terminology, such as chemistry and forensics, to demonstrate intellectual prowess and epistemic authority over his interlocutors. Furthermore, this analysis highlights Holmes’ capacity for “style-shifting,” where he adeptly alternates between high-formal Victorian registers and colloquial language to navigate and manipulate the rigid 19th-century social structures. Unlike previous studies analyzing social class through First Wave reflections, this research demonstrates that Holmes is a dynamic project, actively “constructed” through language to manage social distance and control interactional space. These findings reinforce the argument that linguistic variation is essential in creating social meaning within fictional narratives, offering significant interdisciplinary implications for English literature and sociolinguistics. This study serves as a profound theoretical resource for understanding how professional identities are indexed and maintained linguistically across various media and historical contexts, while affirming the relevance of Third Wave theory in literary studies.

Abstract

This study is important to understand how public figure Syahrini’s jargon influences digital slang innovation and contributes to the dynamics and evolution of the national language on social media. This study aims to identify and analyze unique language variations, or idiolects, that appear on YouTube channels, with a particular focus on The Princess Syahrini channel, and to explore their impact on digital linguistic trends. In today’s digital era, social media has significantly transformed patterns of verbal interaction, providing spaces where spontaneous speech by public figures serves as a medium of authentic self-expression and a strategic tool for reinforcing personal branding. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with the research subject consisting of naturally occurring spoken interactions captured in video recordings, while the unit of analysis is spontaneous speech units produced by participants during social interaction. Data were collected through systematic video observation, followed by manual transcription and analyzed using detailed coding techniques to identify linguistic and interactional patterns. Data validity was ensured through repeated review of the video recordings, careful verification of transcriptions against the audiovisual data, and consistent application of analytical categories to maintain accuracy and reliability of the findings. The analysis revealed twelve consistently used idiolectal jargons, including expressions such as “Cetar membahana” and “Maju kembali cantik”, which function not only as communicative tools but also as effective strategies for projecting a distinctive public persona. These findings demonstrate that celebrity idiolects act as a primary driver of digital slang innovation, influencing how young audiences communicate online and contributing to the development of hybrid language practices. Furthermore, the study highlights that such idiolects play a role in shaping the evolution of the national language in digital contexts, illustrating how individual linguistic creativity in media environments can extend its impact to broader sociolinguistic trends and contemporary communication norms.

Abstract

This study examines gender differences in the use of question tags and performative utterances in the film Enola Holmes (2020). Using Jennifer Coates’ theory of gender and language and speech act theory, the research examines how these linguistic features function in relation to power, politeness, and identity construction within a patriarchal Victorian context. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data taken from the film script and analyzed through pragmatic and textual approaches. The findings show that female characters, particularly Enola Holmes, use question tags more frequently and for diverse pragmatic functions, such as emotional confirmation, rhetorical questioning, and negotiation of meaning. These uses are not signs of uncertainty but serve as strategic interactional resources to assert agency and challenge male authority. Male characters tend to use more performative utterances in the form of commands, reflecting their institutional power. Overall, the study supports the view that gendered language differences are socially constructed.
