Abstract

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has become a reliable tool in Indonesia for predicting, identifying, and evaluating the potential impacts of an activity. However, despite strong regulations, the implementation of EIA in practice still faces various challenges. The quality of EIA documents is often uneven, influenced by the capacity of the drafters, limitations in baseline data, and limitations in analyzing impacts holistically. In many cases, EIAs tend to use a partial approach in which each impact component is analyzed separately without adequate integration. This prevents EIAs from providing a comprehensive picture of the interactions between environmental components and changes in overall environmental quality. To overcome these shortcomings, a more comprehensive, structured, and quantitative evaluation method is needed. Environmental Quality Assessment Management (EQAM) is one method that offers a more objective evaluation approach through the quantitative indicators and scoring based on the level of importance. In the context of environmental decision-making, the use of EQAM is expected to improve the effectiveness of EIA by producing more in-depth and data-based impact analyses. Based on the results of a case study taken from the EIA of palm oil plantation and crude oil industry activities, it can be seen from the EQAM method that the impact of changes in community perceptions and attitudes is the most affected component, while land acquisition, land preparation and maturation, and industrial operations are the most significant sources of impact. Through this study, it is also possible to conclude the impacts that occur in the same time in order to formulate the areas of concern which can be used as a basis for more effective and comprehensive management and monitoring.

Abstract

Hazardous Waste Management at PT. X is focused on the design of a Temporary Storage Facility (TSF) that complies with technical standards and regulatory requirements. The types of hazardous waste identified include used oil, used rags, grease, and hazardous waste packaging, all of which require special handling to prevent adverse impacts on human health and the environment. The objective of this study is to design a hazardous waste TPS at PT. X. The planning method refers to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry (Permen LHK) No. 6 of 2021. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and logbook analysis to determine the characteristics, quantities, and sources of hazardous waste generation. Based on these data, a TPS design was developed with supporting facilities such as ventilation, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and specific labeling according to waste characteristics. Hazardous waste is stored for a maximum of 90 days before being transported by an authorized third party, ensuring structured and environmentally sound management. The proposed TPS design measures 3 × 2 × 3 meters and is equipped with safety facilities, including ventilation, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and labeling in accordance with waste characteristics. This design complies with regulations on maximum storage duration before transfer to a licensed third party. Therefore, the results of this study provide a TPS design that is not only spatially efficient but also ensures regulatory compliance, enhances occupational safety, and minimizes the potential risk of environmental pollution.

Abstract

The tofu industry produces high-strength wastewater that contains large amounts of organic pollutants such as BOD and COD. Direct disposal of untreated wastewater leads to environmental degradation, especially in water bodies. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a filtration system using activated carbon media compared to a system without activated carbon in reducing BOD, COD, and pH levels in tofu wastewater in Penedagandor Village. The experiment used two filtration units with different media compositions. Parameters analyzed were BOD, COD, and pH. The results indicated that the filtration system with activated carbon was more effective in reducing organic pollutants. The BOD reduction ranged from 47.57–83.71% with activated carbon and 43.47–77.46% without activated carbon. COD reduction ranged from 14.24–51.59% with activated carbon and 10.05–46.23% without activated carbon. pH remained within acceptable limits of 6–9. ANOVA analysis revealed significant differences in BOD and COD between treatment methods, while pH differences were not significant

Abstract

Domestic wastewater pollution containing oil and grease is an environmental issue that requires serious attention. Oil and grease can disrupt water quality and affect the life of aquatic biota in it. This study aims to analyze the oil and grease content in domestic wastewater in Lampung Province. This study used an experimental method on 25 domestic wastewater samples to determine the oil and grease content using the gravimetric method according to JIS No. 24 K-0102, 1998. The results of this study obtained oil and grease content values ranging from 0.2 - 3.8 mg / l, which indicates that the value is below the quality standard stipulated in the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia No. 68 of 2016, which is 5 mg/l. The values obtained indicate that the oil and water content in the analyzed wastewater is still relatively low. However, management, supervision, and education to the public are needed to prevent an increase in oil and grease content in domestic wastewater so that it remains within safe limits for the environment.

Abstract

This study examined the potential of water jasmine (Echinodorus palaefolius) in reducing manganese levels in Coal Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using an artificial wetland system. The study was conducted experimentally with time variations of 0, 3, 6, and 9 days, where the manganese concentration was analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The results showed that the initial manganese concentration of 9.75 mg/L, which exceeded the quality standard of the Minister of Environment Decree No. 113 of 2003 (4 mg/L), decreased significantly to 3.94 mg/L on the 3rd day and reached 1.002 mg/L on the 9th day with an effectiveness of 89.73%. An independent t-test showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between with and without plants. The BCF value of 7.028 classifies E. palaefolius as a highly effective accumulator, while the TF value of 0.6 indicates the presence of a phytostabilization mechanism. Research has proven that water jasmine is effective as an environmentally friendly solution for coal-fired wastewater management with the ability to neutralize pH from 4.28 to 6.53 and reduce manganese concentrations below quality standards in a short time.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of varying compositions of sugarcane bagasse and HDPE plastic waste on the calorific value and moisture content of briquettes as an alternative fuel. The research employed pyrolysis of sugarcane bagasse and melting of HDPE plastic, followed by the production of briquettes with different bagasse and HDPE ratios. Moisture content was tested using the oven method, while calorific value was measured with a bomb calorimeter according to applicable standards. The results showed that briquettes composed of 50% bagasse and 50% HDPE had the highest calorific value of 8172 cal/g and the lowest moisture content of 1.57%, meeting the quality standards for wood charcoal briquettes. The addition of HDPE plastic significantly contributed to increasing the energy value and reducing the moisture content of the briquettes. The study concludes that sugarcane bagasse waste and HDPE plastic can be optimally utilized as environmentally friendly and economical alternative energy sources
