Abstract

Background: According to the World Health Organization, annually there are around 50.0-100.0 million cases of dengue fever worldwide, with 0.25-0.50 million of them being cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) which causes around 24,000 death. Objective: The study was directed at evaluating the knowledge and attitudes of mothers regarding dengue prevention in Punge Blang Cut, Jaya Baru. Method: A cross-sectional design was used in the study conducted in April 2019. Around 176 heads of families in the village were sampled. Data was collected through a questionnaire with the Chi-Square test at a significance of 0.05. Results: The majority of respondents had sufficient knowledge (46.6%), their mothers had a positive attitude towards dengue prevention (73.3%), and 52.3% of respondents took sufficient preventive measures. Conclusion: The majority of mothers have sufficient knowledge and have a positive attitude towards preventing dengue fever. It is recommended to increase public knowledge and awareness regarding the handling and prevention of dengue fever through appropriate medical and traditional methods.

Abstract

Background: Lemongrass and turmeric are medicinal plants known for their antibacterial properties due to the presence of compounds such as alkaloids and flavonoids in lemongrass oil, and saponins and flavonoids in turmeric. Typically, lemongrass oil is used for massage oil, and turmeric is commonly used as a spice and traditional medicine. However, there is limited scientific information on the combination of both. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial potential of a formulation combining lemongrass oil and turmeric extract against Escherichia coli bacteria, both in extract form. Method: The research steps include the preparation of the plant materials, extraction, granulation process, and antibacterial testing. Extraction is performed using boiling with distilled water as the solvent. The antibacterial activity testing method employed is the good diffusion method. Results: The formulation of lemongrass oil (Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf) and turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.) has demonstrated antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli in both extract and granule forms across five different formulations. Conclusion: The highest inhibition diameter was observed with the combination of lemongrass oil and turmeric extract at 19.05 mm, and lemongrass oil and turmeric granules at 18.71 mm, in Formula 3 (0.25 lemongrass oil: 0.75 turmeric).

Abstract

Background: Kolang-Kaling (Arenga pinnata Merr.) belongs to the Arecaceae family as a source of natural polysaccharides in the form of galactomannan which is usually used as an additional ingredient. Objective: The study was aimed at determining whether galactose-mannose from Kolang-Kaling (GKK) could be separated using chromatography and its levels using the iodometry method. Method: Extraction of galactomannan using distilled water as a solvent. Purification by Paper Chromatography using WEB [Water: Ethanol: Butanol] mobile phase; WAB [Water: Acetate: Butanol]; CH3COOH 10.0% and 50.0%; CA 10.0% and 20.0%. Purification by TLC uses a variation of the EA: H mobile phase. Results: The GKK extraction yield was 18,5 g (3.7%). The levels before and after inversion were 85.53% and 90.23% with a galactose-mannose standard of 94.52%. Conclusion: Galactomannan can be obtained from Kolang-Kaling extraction and its levels are determined using the iodometry method

Abstract

Background: Body scrub is a skincare preparation that effectively removes dead skin cells caused by free radicals. Kedondong leaves are a plant with extraordinary wealth, especially its vitamins, namely A, B1, and C, and have a high antioxidant content, so they can be used as a natural moisturizer for the skin. Objective: This research aims to formulate a body scrub containing Kedondong leaf extract. Method: Kedondong leaf extract was formulated with a concentration of 10.0; 15.0; and 20.0%. Evaluation of the body scrub formulation includes organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, irritation and moisture using a skin analysis tool. Results: Research shows that the body scrub formulation with Kedondong leaf extract is homogeneous and has a shape, colour and pH value corresponding to skin pH standards. This formulation also does not irritate and provides adequate moisture for the skin. The formulation with a concentration of 20% (F4) shows the best effectiveness, being able to moisturize the skin up to 47.8%. Conclusion: Kedondong leaves can be formulated into an effective body scrub to improve the condition of dull skin to make it brighter, cleaner and smoother.

Abstract

Kopasanda leaf plants (Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M.King & H.Rob) are plants commonly used as medicinal ingredients empirically. The people of East Aceh use it as a wound medicine. Preliminary tests show that the extract and its partitions have a toxic effect on shrimp larvae. In this study, the soluble extract of n-hexane was fractionated using column chromatography with isocratic mobile phase n-hexane: ethyl acetate (7: 3) and silica gel stationary phase. Analysis of the chemical content profile using thin-layer chromatography showed that there were polyphenol organic compounds. The fraction 7 obtained shows that it is toxic to shrimp larvae of Artemia salina Leach.

Abstract

Background: Jamu, a traditional health service deeply ingrained in Indonesian culture, has been utilized for generations. Among the herbal remedies sought after by the public, herbal medicine aimed at enhancing appetite stands out. Unfortunately, the robust demand for these products is often exploited by manufacturers who incorporate pharmaceutical additives. Dexamethasone, a synthetic glucocorticoid renowned for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant attributes, is frequently amalgamated with herbs to stimulate appetite. Its inclusion is prompted by its known side effect of moon face and its potential to enhance appetite with prolonged use. Objective: This research endeavors to ascertain the presence of dexamethasone in the herbal appetite stimulants available in the market within Lubuk Pakam District, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. Method: Qualitative analysis of dexamethasone was conducted utilizing Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectrophotometry. Results: The investigation revealed that several samples of appetite-enhancing herbal medicine suspected to contain dexamethasone indeed exhibited spectra akin to the standard comparison of dexamethasone. Conclusion: Among the ten samples of herbal appetite stimulants scrutinized, eight were found to contain dexamethasone, as evidenced by the congruence of their spectra and functional groups with the comparison standard for dexamethasone.

Abstract

Background: Pomelo (Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck) contains limonoids, flavonoids, naringin, and lycopene, which enhance the effects of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the body. Objective: This study aims to determine whether the extracts from red and white varieties of pomelo possess antioxidant properties and can be formulated into transparent solid soap that meets the quality standards set by SNI 3235-2016. Method: This experimental research utilized extracts from red and white varieties of pomelo. The research stages included sample preparation, processing of test materials, formulation of transparent solid soap with the addition of the extracts, and evaluation tests including organoleptic tests, pH tests, foam height tests, moisture content tests, and antioxidant activity tests using the DPPH method measured with UV-VIS spectrophotometry at concentrations of 60 μg/ml, 50 μg/ml, 40 μg/ml, 30 μg/ml, and 20 μg/ml. The results showed that both red and white pomelo extracts contain the same groups of compounds, including alkaloids, tannins, steroids, triterpenoids, and ascorbic acid. Results: Antioxidant tests indicated that the red pomelo extract has "moderate" antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 185.086 μg/ml, while the white pomelo extract is "inactive" with an IC50 value of 564.309 μg/ml. The transparent solid soap exhibited "moderate" antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 206.592 μg/ml. Conclusion: The transparent solid soap with red pomelo extract showed "weak" antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 295.531 μg/ml, and the soap with white pomelo extract was "inactive" with an IC50 value of 130.207 μg/ml. The evaluation results for the transparent solid soap, including organoleptic properties, pH, foam height, and moisture content, conformed to the standards set by SNI 3235-2016

Abstract

Background: Liquid smoke acts as an antimicrobial and antioxidant, this is related to the concentration of compounds namely phenol, carbonyl and acid. Bacteria Staphylococcus aureus is classified as a gram-positive bacteria and bacteria which is commonly found on the skin, nasal passages and respiratory tract. Hands sanitizer is an antiseptic in gel form that is often used for washing hands without water. One of the natural polymers used is galactomannan. Galactomannan is a natural polymer, namely a polysaccharide isolated from seeds. The endosperm is mainly from the Arecaceae family which consists of the main chain of mannan and galactose in the side chain. Objective: Study of activity test of Hand Sanitizer Gel from coconut shell liquid smoke with a combination of galactomannan and carbopol 940 base against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Method: the aim of this research formulating a hand sanitizer with the active ingredient liquid shell smoke coconut can kill Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The research was experimental with work stages including: collecting coconut shell liquid smoke, making galactomannan from palm fruit determining the concentration of coconut shell liquid smoke hand sanitizer gel, namely 0.1%, 1%, 1.5%, determining the diameter of the inhibition zone of coconut shell liquid smoke using the well method, organoleptic test, homogeneity test, pH test, spreadability test, viscosity test, preparation stability test, irritation test on volunteers and testing antibacterial activity of hand sanitizer gel preparations with liquid smoke as the active ingredient coconut shell against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Results: Coconut shell liquid smoke can inhibit bacterial growth Staphylococcus aureus is greatest at a concentration of 1.5%, which is equal to 12.1 mm and the coconut shell liquid smoke hand sanitizer gel preparation meets the test evaluation. Then a basic combination of galactomannan and carbopol 940 can be obtained used as a base for hand sanitizer gel because it can make hand sanitizer gel becomes thick. Conclusion: coconut shell liquid smoke can be formulated into hand sanitizer gel preparations, galactomannan can be used as a base for hand sanitizer gel

Abstract

Background: The primary reason for the immiscibility of polyethylene (PE) and polyamide (PA) lies in their differing polarities and surface tension energies. Objective: This study aims to investigate the impact of LDPE-g-AO compatibilizer on PE/PA blends. Method: The method employed involves blending using an internal mixer. Results: SEM analysis reveals that the morphology of PE/PA blends without LDPE-g-AO compatibilizer is non-homogeneous and incompatible. However, the addition of 2% LDPE-g-AO compatibilizer results in improved compatibility of the PE/PA blend, characterized by homogeneous and compatible surface adhesion properties, with no visible voids. Conclusion: In conclusion, this research underscores the effectiveness of LDPE-g-AO compatibilizer in bridging two previously immiscible polymers, PE and PA, thereby enhancing their overall compatibility

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Iklim tropis negara Indonesia karena terletak di daerah khatulistiwa yang memberi peluang berbagai tanaman tumbuh dengan subur, termasuk buah-buahan. Umumnya, vitamin C merupakan salah satu kandungan yang terdapat pada buah-buahan, yang berperan sebagai antioksidan. Sekian banyaknya buah-buahan, slah satunya buah semangka (Citrullus vulgaris Schard). Buah semangka juga dimanfaatkan untuk menurunkan tekanan darah bagi penderita hipertensi, karena kandungan air dan kaliumnya yang tinggi sehingga mampu menstabilisasikan tekanan darah. Tujuan: Tujuannya untuk mendeteksi keberadaan dan kuantitas vitamin C pada daging dan kulit buah semangka merah dan kuning. Metode: Metode yang digunakan meliputi uji kualitas dan kuantitas masing-masing dengan pereaksi warna dan spektrofotometri UV. Hasil: Penelitian memberi informasi pada daging dan kulit buah semangka terdapat vitamin C dengan tanda ada perubahan warna maupun pengendapan kuning-merah bata dan coklat. Vitamin C dari daging dan kulit buah semangka merah dan kuning masing-masing adalah 50,688; 42.482; 34.764; dan 42,152 gr/L. Kesimpulan: Daging maupun kulit buah semangka merah dan kuning ditemukan vitamin C.
