Abstract

Background: Stroke leads to cerebral infarct, and time increases risk of infarct progression to healthy tissue. Further insult and secondary neuronal injury (such as hypoxia) can accelerate the progression of the infarct. The only definitive management strategies for ischaemic stroke are reperfusion and endovascular thrombectomy. Methods: This systematic review focused on full-text English literature published between 2014 and 2024 using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Editorials and review pieces published in the same journal as the submission without a DOI were not accepted. The literature was compiled using Medline, Science Direct, Scopus and Embase, among other online venues. Result: Five publications were found to be directly related to our ongoing systematic examination after a rigorous three-level screening approach. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of the complete text was conducted, and additional scrutiny was given to these articles. Conclusion: FAST is a useful screening tool for identifying stroke at call-taker level. FAST has acceptable sensitivity when used as a screening tool; however, specificity and diagnostic effectiveness are lacking.

Abstract

Background: Cerebral palsy (CP), a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by abnormalities in muscle tone, movement, and motor skills, is a common name attributed to developing brain damage. Although its clinical features are evident in the first years of life, the diagnosis of specific CP can be made after the period of 3 to 5 ages. Conclusion: The high prevalence of CP, the low level of education among women, the inequalities in the distribution of income levels between regions, and the high level of consanguineous marriages in our country, especially in some regions.

Abstract

Background: Depression is a prevalent condition affecting over 320 million people worldwide and is a leading cause of disability. Although second-generation antidepressants are commonly prescribed, their effectiveness, particularly for non-severe depression, is controversial. Alternative treatments, such as exercise, have gained attention for their potential benefits. Objectives: This systematic review aims to compare the effectiveness of exercise and antidepressants on depressive symptoms in adults with non-severe depression. Additionally, it explores the effects of combination treatment versus monotherapy and examines drop-out rates to gauge treatment acceptance. Methods: Adhering to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, studies published in English between 2014 and 2024 were reviewed. Databases searched included PubMed, Science Direct, and SagePub. Eligible studies focused on the comparative effectiveness of exercise and antidepressants for non-severe depression. Results: The review included five relevant studies. Findings suggest that exercise can be a beneficial adjunctive treatment for depression, improving both mental health and physical fitness. Conclusion: Exercise is a promising non-pharmacological treatment for non-severe depression, with evidence supporting its efficacy. Further comprehensive trials are needed to establish definitive guidelines and long-term benefits.

Abstract

Background: Low cardiovascular fitness is common in Down syndrome (DS) patients, with VO2peak values consistently lower compared to peers without disabilities and those with intellectual disabilities. Regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining general health and preventing chronic diseases. Strategies for improving cardiorespiratory fitness in DS include aquatic training, water-based exercises, aerobic training, and plyometric training. Methods: The author followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines for a systematic review of randomized controlled trials aimed at improving cardio-vascular parameters through exercise interventions. Result: The study analyzed twelve exercise regimens for Down syndrome individuals, with an average training period of 15 weeks. Results showed consistent and stable results, but did not significantly improve HRpeak, VO2peak, RER, time to exhaustion, or peak minute ventilation. Conclusion: Down syndrome patients often struggle with reduced exercise capacity, leading to reduced survival rates. Cardiovascular exercise programs can increase workload, peak oxygen consumption, and time to exhaustion. However, exercise may not significantly impact heart rate due to less hormonal responses. Designing breathing-friendly exercise programs can improve respiratory function.
