Abstract

Introduction: Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) significantly contributes to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men. When medical treatments are insufficient, surgical options such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) are considered standard. However, TURP has drawbacks, including the need for general or spinal anesthesia, hospitalization, and potential complications like retrograde ejaculation, hematuria, clot retention, and urethral stricture. In response, less invasive treatments have been developed, though their functional outcomes have often been less satisfactory than TURP, leading to their exclusion from recent guidelines. Methods: A thorough search was conducted using keywords related to MITs for LUTS, with inclusion criteria focusing on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in English. Studies were selected based on their relevance and adherence to the inclusion criteria, followed by a rigorous quality assessment and data synthesis. Results: From an initial pool of studies, five key papers were selected for detailed analysis. These studies included comparisons of prostatic artery embolization (PAE) with TURP, aquablation with sham procedures, and various other MITs. Conclusion: This review highlights the potential of MITs as viable alternatives to TURP for treating LUTS associated with BOO. While TURP remains highly effective, MITs, particularly aquablation and PAE, offer comparable functional outcomes with better safety profiles and preservation of sexual function.

Abstract

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prostate condition causing bladder obstruction, kidney damage, and obstructive nephropathy. Treatment options include medication, surgery, and lifestyle changes. Holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) is a desirable substitute. Methods: Holmium and BPH are related terms in the study of holmium laser enucleation, with the search conducted using MeSH terms. The results were screened by two reviewers, with a third reviewer consulted if consensus was not reached. The study aimed to understand the relationship between holmium and BPH, focusing on the use of holmium in prostate cancer treatment. Result: BPH patients undergoing HoLEP and TURP prostate treatment showed similar outcomes, including shorter hospital stay, reduced operative time, and improved postoperative IPSS, but no significant difference was observed. Conclusion: HoLEP is a surgical technique that has demonstrated potential benefits over Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP). It may be better for incidental prostate cancer detection due to better hemostatic control and fewer side effects, and it may also shorten hospital stays and operating times. Additionally, it may improve the International Prostate Symptom Score and postoperative post-residual volume.

Abstract

Background : Stunting has been a chronic worldwide problem which affects children growth and development, finally their productivity and future. Maternal age was one of determining factors, yet still uncertain and somewhat neglected. Method : Systematic review based on PRISMA statement was conducted. Critical appraisal was done with The Joanna-Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Studies’ characteristics and results were extracted for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Quantitative analysis was done with random- of fixed-effect model based on heterogeneity. Results: A total of 18 good quality studies involving 422,750 mothers and their respective children were included. Qualitative analysis showed that younger and older maternal age were linked with stunting risk increment. However, quantitative analysis found that only younger age (< 20 years old) was related to increase of stunting risk (OR = 1.31; 95% CI = 1.05 – 1.63). Conclusion: Younger maternal age (< 20 years old) was related to development of stunting in children.  More studies should be conducted to provide more evidence in other age groups.
