Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to investigate the implementation of character education based on local wisdom at SMA Negeri 1 Teladan Yogyakarta and assess its impact on students' character development and academic performance in the context of contemporary challenges in the digital era. Design/methods– Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, the study focuses on an in-depth exploration of character education at SMA Negeri 1 Teladan Yogyakarta. Data collection methods include interviews, observation, and documentation, with a particular emphasis on how local wisdom is integrated into character education. Comparative analysis of the findings with existing literature on character education was conducted to assess the program's effectiveness. Findings – The study reveals a robust character education program at SMA Negeri 1 Teladan Yogyakarta, which includes character habituation during class, outside class, and in collaboration with parents and the community. The program positively influences students' enthusiasm for learning, collaboration, responsibility, and discipline, subsequently improving their academic performance. However, challenges such as student diversity and varying levels of character internalization were identified. Research implications/limitations – The research provides insights into the integration of local wisdom in character education, contributing to the discourse on character education in the digital era. Limitations include the focus on a single institution, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Practical implications – The study offers a model for integrating character education based on local wisdom in educational institutions, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach that includes academic, extracurricular, and community aspects. Originality/value – This study contributes original insights into the field of character education by highlighting the integration of local wisdom at SMA Negeri 1 Teladan Yogyakarta. It presents a unique perspective on addressing contemporary challenges in education, particularly in the digital era, through a well-rounded character education program.

Abstract

Purpose – This study explores the implementation of a public service information system through the PD Pontren Section at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Sleman, focusing on the quality and effectiveness of services provided to the community. Design/methods/approach – Employing a qualitative, descriptive case study approach, the research utilized observations, semi-structured interviews, and a literature review. The data collection and analysis involved a three-step process: data reduction, data display, and data verification, enhancing reliability through triangulation. Findings – The implementation of the Integrated Service Unit (PTSP) by PD Pontren demonstrates an efficient and comprehensive approach to public service. This includes a unified service delivery process, adherence to five critical work cultures, and a focus on Diniyah and Islamic Boarding School education. The study identified significant improvements in service transparency, accessibility, and accountability. Research implications/limitations – While offering insights into effective public service systems, the study's focus on a single district limits its broader applicability. Comparative research across different contexts is recommended. Practical implications – The findings can inform policy formulation and administrative practices in educational settings, highlighting the role of integrated information systems in enhancing service quality. Originality/value – This research contributes to the understanding of the impact of information systems on public service delivery and educational quality, offering a model for other districts and educational institutions.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to explore the implementation of public service delivery by the Madrasah Education Section in Kemenag Sleman, focusing on operational procedures, educator and student development programs, religious moderation, tolerance, and digital transformation initiatives. Design/methods/approach – Adopting a qualitative research design, the study utilized descriptive analysis to understand the intricacies of public service delivery in the context of madrasah education. Key methods included structured face-to-face interviews with the Head of Madrasah Education and an extensive review of relevant documents. This approach enabled a detailed examination of the service offerings and operational dynamics within the Madrasah Education Section. Findings – The study reveals a comprehensive array of services and programs, including operational permits, development of educators and students, and initiatives in religious moderation and digital transformation. It highlights the integration of digital tools in educational management and curriculum development, addressing the dynamic needs of contemporary madrasah education. Research implications/limitations – The findings offer valuable insights into the public service delivery mechanisms within religious educational settings. However, the study's focus on a single district limits its generalizability, suggesting the need for further research in diverse regions for a more comprehensive understanding. Practical implications – This research underscores the importance of adapting educational services to technological advancements and societal changes, emphasizing digital integration in educational management and curriculum development to enhance the quality of education and cater to diverse student needs. Originality/value – The study contributes significantly to the discourse on public service implementation in educational settings, particularly in religious institutions. Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to analyze comprehensively the impact of digital transformation on the data processing system within the Madrasah Education section at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) in Sleman district, Indonesia. It focuses on assessing how digital transformation enhances efficiency, accuracy, and connectivity in managing crucial educational data. Design/methods– The research employed a qualitative methodology, emphasizing descriptive analysis to explore the integration of digital technologies into the management practices of religious education institutions. Data collection combined structured interviews with key educational figures and an extensive review of relevant documents and digital artifacts, including policy documents, implementation reports, and analytics from digital platforms such as EMIS, SIMPATIKA, SIMSARPRAS, and SEDAKEP. Findings – The study uncovered that digital transformation significantly improves the management of educational data, enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and connectivity within the Madrasah Education section of Kemenag Sleman. Through the deployment of digital tools and platforms, the institution has seen substantial advancements in its operational capabilities, reflecting a broader trend towards digitalization in educational management. Research implications/limitations – This research contributes to the understanding of digital transformation in the educational sector, particularly within settings where cultural and religious factors are prominent. However, its focus on a single institution within a specific cultural and administrative context may limit the generalizability of the findings. Future studies are encouraged to explore digital transformation across various educational environments and cultures. Practical implications – The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and administrators in religious education institutions considering or undergoing digital transformation. Strategic planning and stakeholder engagement are emphasized as crucial for the successful implementation of digital tools in educational settings. Originality/value –This study provides a unique contribution to the literature by examining digital transformation in the context of Indonesian religious education, a sector where digital adoption intersects significantly with cultural and religious considerations. It highlights the potential of digital strategies to revolutionize traditional educational management practices, offering a model for similar institutions navigating the digital era.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to explore the effectiveness of the Islamic Education Program Work (PAIS) in enhancing the professionalism of Islamic Education teachers (PAI) and its impact on the development of Islamic education within Sleman District's Ministry of Religious Affairs. By identifying strengths, limitations, and areas for improvement in these programs, the research seeks to provide valuable insights and recommendations that can guide future strategies and initiatives in the field of Islamic education. Design/methods – Adopting a qualitative research methodology with a descriptive case study design, this research was set in the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Sleman District. The study employed a variety of data collection methods including observation, semi-structured interviews, and literature review. The primary participant was the head of the PAIS work unit, Mr. Sangaji, S.H.I. Data analysis involved data reduction, data display, and data verification phases to ensure the validity and accuracy of the findings. Findings – The research revealed that PAIS work programs significantly contribute to the professional development of PAI teachers and the overall quality of Islamic education. These programs support strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and the incorporation of technology in education, thus creating a dynamic and effective educational environment. However, challenges such as limited funding, competency and commitment standardization, and optimal parental support were identified. Research implications/limitations – The implications of this research extend beyond Sleman District, providing insights into the potential of targeted educational programs to enhance Islamic education quality. However, the study is limited by its focus on a single institution and the specific cultural and administrative context of Indonesia, which may influence the generalizability of the findings. Practical implications – This study underscores the importance of strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and technological integration in Islamic education. Addressing the identified challenges can aid in overcoming barriers to effective education and contribute to fostering a knowledgeable and ethical society. Originality/value – This research offers a unique examination of the impact of digital transformation within the context of Islamic education in Indonesia, particularly through the lens of PAIS work programs in the Ministry of Religious Affairs. It contributes to the broader understanding of digital transformation in education, highlighting the intersection of technology, education, and culture in a religious educational setting.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates the role of the Islamic Education Section of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Yogyakarta in improving student academic performance. Design/methods – Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation from key informants, main informants, and supporting informants involved with the Islamic Education Section. Findings – The findings reveal that the Section significantly contributes to academic achievements through comprehensive services, guidance, and activities such as Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ) and the Islamic Education Skills and Arts Week (Pentas PAI). These programs enhance students' interest, talents, and understanding of Islamic principles, fostering balanced development. Research implications/limitations – The study's scope is limited to Yogyakarta, and the primary reliance on qualitative data may limit the generalizability of the findings. Further research could include a broader range of regions and employ mixed-method approaches to validate and expand upon these results. Practical implications – Educational policymakers should consider integrating religious education with mainstream academic curricula to foster holistic student development. The success of the MTQ and Pentas PAI programs underscores the potential of such integrated educational approaches in promoting academic and moral growth. Originality/value – This study highlights the crucial role of religious education in nurturing well-rounded individuals and offers a model that can be adapted and implemented in various educational systems to enhance student outcomes holistically.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates the human resource development (HRD) management practices at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Office in Yogyakarta, which is recognized for its high-quality human resources and numerous achievements. Design/methods – The study employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing observations, interviews, and documentation to collect data. The focus is on the Ministry's innovative HRD programs and their impact on employee performance. Findings – Key findings indicate that the Ministry's initiatives, including the One-Stop Service and Collaborative Service System with Jogja Smart Service, have significantly improved public satisfaction and employee effectiveness. These HRD strategies showcase effective planning and continuous evaluation. Research implications/limitations – The study acknowledges limitations such as its focus on a single office and reliance on qualitative data, which may introduce subjectivity. Future research should include a broader scope and employ quantitative methods to validate and expand upon these findings, enhancing the generalizability of HRD principles. Practical implications – The study provides valuable insights for HRD practitioners and policymakers, emphasizing the importance of structured HRD programs and strategic planning in improving organizational performance and employee outcomes. Originality/value – This research contributes to the broader HRD literature by offering empirical evidence from a governmental context, underscoring the applicability of HRD principles across different sectors and demonstrating the success of innovative HRD practices in a public institution.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aimed to explore the development of student responsibility through the exemplification and habituation practices of teachers at Pondok Pesantren API Asri Tegalrejo Magelang. Design/methods– Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved seventh-grade male students who are also residents of the boarding school. Data were collected through observations, interviews with key informants, and document analysis. The analysis followed Miles and Huberman's framework, focusing on data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Findings – The findings indicate that character formation is significantly influenced by consistent teacher-led initiatives, emphasizing communal practices, ethical discourse, and disciplined routines. These practices contribute to the holistic development of responsibility in students, reinforcing qualities such as ethical adherence, decision-making, initiative, adaptability, and cooperation. Research implications/limitations – The study highlights the importance of structured, habitual practices led by exemplary teachers in fostering student responsibility. Limitations include the unique boarding school environment and the need for adaptation in different educational contexts. Future research should explore the adaptability of these practices across diverse settings and their long-term impacts on student behavior. Practical implications – Educational institutions aiming to foster student responsibility should integrate structured, habitual practices led by exemplary teachers. This approach not only enhances character development but also emphasizes the importance of teacher training and development in ethical and responsible behavior. Originality/value – This study provides insights into the effective methods of character education in an Islamic boarding school context, demonstrating the critical role of teacher behavior and structured routines in developing student responsibility and ethical behavior.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to describe the implementation of educational programs by LAZISMU DIY in improving education in Indonesia, focusing on the effectiveness and efficiency of these philanthropic initiatives in enhancing community welfare in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Design/methods– Employing a qualitative-descriptive research design, data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The tools and technologies used included digital recording devices, notebooks for field notes, and cameras for photographic documentation. Data analysis involved transcription, data reduction, and the identification of key themes and patterns. Findings – The findings reveal that LAZISMU DIY's programs, including scholarships and teacher training, significantly impact educational quality and access. These programs address financial barriers and promote sustainable educational development through a holistic approach combining financial aid and capacity-building activities. Research implications/limitations Despite the qualitative nature of the study limiting generalizability, the results highlight the potential of strategic philanthropic interventions in fostering educational equity. Future research should incorporate quantitative methods to validate these findings and explore long-term impacts Practical implications – The study emphasizes the importance of combining financial support with capacity-building and community engagement for effective educational interventions. This model provides a blueprint for other philanthropic organizations aiming to improve education in similar contexts. Originality/value – This study provides valuable insights into the successful integration of financial aid, capacity-building, and community engagement by LAZISMU DIY, showcasing its significant contributions to improving education in Yogyakarta and offering a replicable model for educational philanthropy.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the efforts of pesantren in reconstructing traditional medicine in line with the vision of al-Tibb al-Nabawi and the management of al-Tibb al-Nabawi learning in pesantren. Design/methods– This research uses a case study at Pesantren Sunan Kalijaga Pakuncen Nganjuk, aligned with the mission of education and the development of traditional medicine through the production of traditional herbal medicine. Utilizing an interactive descriptive analysis with Abed al-Jabiri's postcolonial theory Findings – The researcher concludes that Pesantren Sunan Kalijaga interprets Tibb An-Nabawi by combining the principles of prophetic medicine and traditional Nusantara medicine, resulting in effective and affordable health solutions such as Jamu Al-Qomar. The management of learning in this pesantren involves holistic religious education, practical skills, and structured unit business management, equipping students with life skills and independence. Research implications/limitations – The differences in social and cultural contexts between the community around Pesantren Sunan Kalijaga and communities in other regions of Indonesia could influence the results of this study. Practices and acceptance of traditional medicine and al-Tibb al-Nabawi can vary greatly in different places. Practical implications – This research establishes a foundation for enhancing healthcare services in pesantrens by integrating Al-Tibb An-Nabawi with local traditional medicine, promoting economic self-sufficiency through herbal enterprises like those at Pesantren Sunan Kalijaga. The life skills education methods can be adopted to equip students with practical skills. Originality/value – This research offers a novel perspective on integrating Al-Tibb An-Nabawi with traditional Nusantara medicine in pesantrens, specifically at Pesantren Sunan Kalijaga. It highlights a unique life skills education model combining religious education with practical health and herbal medicine skills, providing an innovative example for healthcare and economic self-sufficiency in other pesantrens
