Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of bi'ah lughawiyyah and its implications for the acquisition of Arabic by participants at the Naatiq International Arabic Language and Literature Course Institute. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical research type. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, with the main informants consisting of the founder and tutor as well as course participants. Data analysis is carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, and its validity is tested through source and technique triangulation. The results of the study show that the linguistic environment in the institution is implemented systematically through the integration of institutional character, learning programs, language rules, periodic evaluations, and the role of tutors as linguistic models. The implementation of an Arabic language environment has proven to have a positive impact on improving participants' Arabic language competence, particularly speaking skills, and contributes to the formation of self-confidence and positive affective attitudes. In addition, language habits and discipline play a role in shaping participants' linguistic habits on an ongoing basis. However, this study also found a number of challenges, such as differences in participants' backgrounds, abilities, and levels of motivation, which require adaptive pedagogical management. This study confirms that bi'ah lughawiyyah is not merely a local institutional tradition, but rather a pedagogical approach with a strong theoretical foundation in the acquisition of Arabic as a second language. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the development of Arabic language learning, particularly in the design of an effective and sustainable language environment.

Abstract

The multilingual environment at Pondok Pesantren Darussalam Parmeraan, where santri and ustaz alternate among Arabic, Indonesian, and Batak Mandailing, creates a natural setting for code-mixing in daily communication. This study aims to identify the forms and directions of code-mixing, examine the motivations for its use, and analyze its sociolinguistic functions in both educational and social interactions. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that the dominant forms of code-mixing are insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization, occurring outwardly (between Arabic and non-Arabic languages) and inwardly (between Indonesian and Batak Mandailing). Code-mixing functions as a communicative strategy, strengthens group solidarity, and reinforces religious identity within the pesantren community. This study contributes to understanding multilingual communication in Islamic educational settings and provides new insights into tri-lingual code-mixing, a rarely examined phenomenon in Indonesian sociolinguistics.

Abstract

Arabic language learning at MI Al Huda Karangnongko Yogyakarta has tended to be monotonous, as it is predominantly conducted through lecture, question-and-answer, and memorization methods, which has resulted in low student learning interest. This study aims to examine the effect of implementing the Total Physical Response (TPR) method on improving Arabic vocabulary mastery among fourth-grade students of class IV B at MI Al Huda. The research employed an experimental approach using a true experimental design, specifically the pretest–posttest control group design. The research sample consisted of two classes selected from the entire student population of MI Al Huda, with class IV B serving as the experimental group that received instruction using the TPR method, and class IV A serving as the control group that was taught using conventional instructional methods. Data analysis was conducted using a parametric statistical test in the form of an Independent Samples t-Test, assisted by SPSS version 25. The results of the analysis revealed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, which is lower than the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method has a significant effect on the Arabic vocabulary mastery of fourth-grade students in class IV B at MI Al Huda Karangnongko Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Reading skills play a crucial role in the learning process, yet many students still struggle to comprehend Arabic texts effectively. This study examines the implementation of the Peer Tutor method supported by the Magic Pocket media to enhance students’ reading abilities at MTs Darussalam. The Peer Tutor method enables collaborative learning, allowing students to assist one another in understanding reading materials, while the Magic Pocket media containing various learning tools related to Arabic texts helps create a more engaging and interactive learning environment. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation to capture the experiences and perceptions of teachers and students. The findings reveal that the Peer Tutor method encourages active knowledge sharing, and the Magic Pocket media significantly increases student interest and participation in the learning process. Together, these components contribute to improved reading skills among students. The study concludes that integrating the Peer Tutor method with Magic Pocket media offers an effective alternative strategy for enhancing Arabic reading proficiency and recommends its broader application in similar educational settings.

Abstract

Initial observations indicate that approximately 68% of students tend to use non-formal language outside of instructional activities, especially when interacting with their peers. This condition is related to the students’ low internal motivation to use foreign languages and the strong influence of a social environment that supports the use of their mother tongue. In this context, the reward and punishment method has become one of the strategies widely applied by educational institutions to enforce discipline, as it has been proven to motivate learners to achieve and behave positively. At Pondok Modern Ar-Risalah Ponorogo, this method is employed to enforce language discipline through various innovative practices. This study aims to investigate these forms of innovation in order to enhance students’ language discipline. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach using observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal several innovations in the implementation of reward and punishment, including rewards in the form of gifts, praise, and entertainment, as well as punishments such as memorizing vocabulary, writing stories in Arabic or English, and wearing a special vest as a reminder of discipline. These innovations have proven effective in improving students’ language discipline, and activities such as muhadorah, muhadasah, drama competitions, and speech contests further strengthen a language-rich environment that supports the continuous development of students’ language skills.

Abstract

The limited of speaking skill among learners of Arabic remains a common issue in many Islamic educational institutions. Although Arabic is formally taught, many students are still unable to use it effectively as a means of communication. This study employed a quantitative descriptive approach to investigate the influence of bi’ah lughawiyyah on maharah kalām among 136 students of MTs Muallimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. A Likert-scale questionnaire was used as the research instrument, developed based on theoretical indicators of language acquisition and speaking skills. Data were analyzed using normality tests, linearity tests, and simple linear regression through SPSS. The findings revealed that students’ bi’ah lughawiyyah was in the high category, while their maharah kalām ranged from moderately good to high. Regression analysis indicated a significant influence between the two variables Sig. 0.000 < 0.05 with a contribution of 13.7%. These results indicate that a stronger language environment corresponds to higher speaking ability, although other factors also play a role. In conclusion, bi’ah lughawiyyah contributes significantly to the improvement of maharah kalām, but it is not the sole determinant of speaking competence.
