Abstract

Da'wah, or Islamic preaching, has expanded into cyber media. This article aims to analyze the use of cyber media for da'wah, focusing on media space, media documentation, and media objects, as exemplified by Ustaz Abi Azkakia's live streaming of Mobile Legends on YouTube. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research incorporates literature studies, video documentation, and analysis of media features. The data findings reveal three key aspects: First, the optimization of YouTube as a media space by Ustaz Abi Azkakia for live streaming and uploading da'wah content, including features such as video uploads, shorts, and live streaming. Second, in terms of media documentation, Abi Azkakia effectively engages players by integrating worship and moral values into content, using visually appealing thumbnails, promoting polite behavior, facilitating live chat discussions, and advocating sincere, non-commercial donations. This approach includes personal narratives, stories of the Prophet and his companions, and references to the Al-Qur'an and Hadith. Third, regarding media objects, this article observes an interactivity trend with a modest increase in likes and comments, while the duration of content shows a fluctuating trend, and overall broadcast frequency tends to decrease.

Abstract

The increasing religious enthusiasm of some Indonesians has become a target for extremist actors to spread their ideas and concepts. In fact, extremism can threaten the integrity of the nation and state. This article aims to discover the strategies Islami.co and Bincangsyariah.com used in conducting counter-narratives of extremism through online media. Islami.co and Bincangsyariah.com are moderate Islamic media involved in the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) program through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This article uses a qualitative approach with content analysis techniques over supported data which are founders of Islami.co and Bincangsyariah.com as informants. Their published articles consist of counter-narrative extremism themes. The article primarily investigates the methods Islami.co and Bincangsyariah.com use to promote moderate Islamic content in the digital realm. The findings reveal that these sites engage in counter-narrative strategies by scrutinizing the arguments and claims of individuals or groups promoting extremism, thereby highlighting their fallacies. Moreover, they craft and disseminate alternative narratives that represent moderate Islam. As a result, Islami.co and Bincangsyariah.com have successfully exposed the flaws in the reasoning of pro-violence groups. However, further research is necessary to gauge the broader societal impact of these counter-narrative efforts.

Abstract

The development of the hijra community in Soloraya has significantly influenced all societal levels, particularly the millennial generation. This research aims to identify the model of religious moderation within the millennial generation in Soloraya, focusing on the hijra community, especially the Legawa and Bi-Adzab communities. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the analysis utilizes an interactive model encompassing data reduction, delivery, and conclusion drawing. The Legawa and Bi-Adzab hijra communities leverage public spaces for discourse, promoting a moderate, friendly, and welcoming interpretation of religion. Legawa and Bi-Adzab encourage Islam to enter deep into the public sphere so that it can access facilities properly so as not to threaten democracy and pluralism. These communities advocate for a deeper integration of Islam into the public sphere, ensuring proper access to facilities without compromising democracy and pluralism. Legawa and Bi-Adzab have become symbols of cultural resistance against Islamic movements advocating takfiri ideology and the Islamic caliphate, which are less accommodating of local traditions deemed laisa minal Islam. These communities prioritize local religious traditions in their activities, aiming to shape identity and enhance moral values. They serve as spiritual spaces that strengthen faith and promote a universal respect for local customs. The ultimate goal of Legawa and Bi-Adzab is to elevate the spirituality and religious devotion of the millennial generation.

Abstract

Mosques play a crucial role in religious development, prompting several to enhance their management systems and religious activities through digital transformation. This study critically examines the digital transformation in da'wah at Masjid Al Irsyad, integrating organizational learning theory and contemporary digital innovation. Employing a case study methodology, the research identifies five key dimensions of transformation: the development of innovative online da'wah initiatives, strategic modifications in da'wah methodologies, increased participant engagement, comprehensive training in multimedia, and the establishment of sustainable financial frameworks. Theoretically, the study enriches our understanding of integrating traditional religious practices with modern technology. Practically, it highlights the strategic use of social media for broader da'wah dissemination, the creation of responsive educational programs, and the implementation of sustainable financial models. These insights are crucial for religious organizations aiming to harmonize traditional values with the digital age's demands.

Abstract

Religious hybridity warrants complex study due to its profound impact in engaging young Muslims with dynamic religious perspectives. Teras Da'wah in Yogyakarta has become a notable contemporary religious community, merging cultural and religious elements in its da'wah practices. This research delves into the hybridization process within the Teras Dakwah community, aiming to bolster the enthusiasm of young Muslims. Employing ethnographic and netnographic approaches, the study investigates the specific type of hybridization that Teras Dakwah utilizes to captivate worshippers from diverse backgrounds. The findings in this research show that the hybridization carried out by the Yogyakarta Teras Dakwah community combines religious and cultural elements in the process of preaching. A hybrid identity can also be seen in the ustaz, which gives lectures from various groups. Additionally, a hybrid identity is evident among the ustaz who deliver lectures from multiple perspectives. Notably, the Teras Dakwah's 'Fun Koran' program is particularly popular among millennials, as it adeptly addresses, understands, and incorporates the turmoil and diverse inputs from congregants. This research suggests a significant shift in the da'wah activities of young Muslims in contemporary times, moving from traditional to more hybrid methods.

Abstract

The teaching tradition of Islamic boarding schools has encountered deterritorialization. Islamic boarding schools that used to be distinguished by traditionality have transformed the management, financial, and learning traditions following digital developments. This article aims to examine the substantial shift in Islamic boarding school intellectual traditions from traditional to digital, which will then be called 'online recitation’, through live Facebook streaming content of Kuliah Ihya' Tematik (Ihya' Thematic Lectures) and Ngariksa (Questioning). The data were collected through documentation, surveys, and in-depth interviews involving kyai, production teams, and online santri (student) of two Facebook accounts: Ulil Abshar Abdalla (Ihya' Thematic Lectures) and Oman Fathurahman (Ngariksa). Data was analyzed using netnography through investigation, interaction, immersion, integration, and incarnation stages. The results showed values, rituals, heroes, and symbols in the deterritorialization culture of Islamic boarding schools. Followers of the online recitation get a social experience (becoming more sensitive to social issues) and a ritual experience (calmness in living life) after participating in the Ngaji online through live streaming or recorded playback. Research contributes to the development of Islamic communication science, where Islamic boarding schools, as the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, can communicate with the broader community about learning activities in Islamic boarding schools through social media, which is of great interest to the public.
