Abstract

This article is a critical review of the phenomenon of political contestation in the 2019 presidential election. Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDI P) views the reality that NU is a political attribute of Ma’ruf Amin, as a tool to influence voting. In this context, the political strategy deliberately framed by the Prabowo camp aims to neutralize religious issues. Using a phenomenological approach and descriptive-analytical method, this research will dialogue with two specific problems, specifically: what is the role of Ma’ruf Amin as a voter for PDI P, and what is the role of voters in PDI P's victory? Furthermore, data were obtained through interviews, observations, and literature studies from several sources relevant to the research topic. The research results show that the Ma’ruf Amin entity as Jokowi's representative is seen as an absolute in gaining votes for the PDI P. Muslims as voters are divided into two types. First, the voters are dominated by reactive voters with lower secondary education levels. Second, the rational, responsive and active voters with an upper secondary education level.

Abstract

Education is commonly perceived as the process of having systematic instruction from educators for better living quality, and sometimes, it means higher lifetime earnings. Teachers play an important role in educating the next generation. The Indonesian talk show “Kick Andy” and the news portal “Kumparan” released on Youtube, show a message on education. These programs narrate the story of an early-childhood-education teacher from a remote area in Nusa Tenggara Timur. Both programs illustrate a woman’s struggle to obtain an education opportunity and provide access to education among the children in her village. The data was collected with an interview method. Data were available on television and online media platform. This study employs a framework by Sara Mills’s critical discourse in a combination of the teacher’s professional development theory to rectify how mass media portrays a female teacher who lives in a marginal area. Based on the collected data in Ibusm State, on the one hand, this study finds that the media still depicts women as submissive and oppressed figures who should serve the family and country. On the other hand, it is found that women are empowered to rise from adversity, which is also reinforced by a strong teacher’s professional identity in a teacher’s self.

Abstract

Although many agencies have carried out campaigns for and socialization of religious moderation, cases of intolerance still occur locally. These socialization agents are religious groups and university academics, and the media play a significant role because they produce information and influence people's perceptions to take action. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Stuart Hall's content analysis. Hall believed that meaning is constructed through language. Meanwhile, the primary data source is religious moderation narrative articles published in the Solopos. This paper aims to describe the discourse on religious moderation produced by Solopos, published every Friday through the Khazanah rubric from March 2020 to March 2022. This research focuses on three aspects: firstly, who are the agencies used as references by the Solopos media in producing moderation narratives?; secondly, what are the issues contained in the Khazanah rubric?; and thirdly, how does the editorial policy present the discourse of religious moderation in Khazanah rubric? The conclusions of this study are: Firstly, Solopos uses teachers, lecturers, and religious leaders as references. They come from Islamic organizations such as NU and Muhammadiyah. Secondly, the issue of religious moderation raised by Solopos revolves around fiqh, muamalah, and aqidah. Thirdly, the editor of Solopos is committed to maintaining harmony by continuing to display articles that reflect moderate Islam. We call the journalism practice implemented by Solopos through the Khazanah rubric the wasathiyah journalism.
