Abstract

English has been used as the mother tongue in several countries. Learning English for young learners is especially necessary because we will understand the meaning of English sentences by learning vocabulary. English is also a complex language to learn, therefore the teacher must think of something that can change students' views on learning English. In learning EYL, the teacher must consider engaging learning that keeps students from getting bored, such as learning English vocabulary using media. One example of an application or technology-based learning media is the Duolingo application. Duolingo is a learning medium in the form of a practical application for learning vocabulary. It is an application that can attract students' interest in learning. This study aims at determining how suitable the Duolingo application is for young English learners. This study used Quasi Experimental quantitative research with 22 students in class 5G as the experimental class and 22 students in class 5H as the control class subjects. Researcher choose this Quasi-Experimental because she want to know the difference before and after. Students were given treatment three times using the Duolingo application and provided a pre-test before treatment and a post-test after treatment. The results showed significant differences between the pre-test and post-test of each class. The test results were tested by T-Test: Two-sample assuming equal variances, done with Microsoft Excel. The results of the statistical test showed that the t-value was 0.394, which could be concluded to be less than the t-table, which was 2.080. These results indicate that the Duolingo application is practical for students' vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The lexicon is a fundamental aspect that educators must focus on, as it encompasses all the words understood and used by an individual. The importance of an effective vocabulary program, which includes extensive reading, specific word instruction, independent word learning strategies, and word-play activities. Recent educational innovations, such as Outing Class Based Contextual Learning, aim to enhance students' vocabulary skills by incorporating real-life experiences into the learning process. Nawas (2018) highlights the benefits of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach in empowering students, fostering an interactive learning environment, and promoting collaboration. The primary focus of this study is to explore the implementation of class-based contextual learning strategies in order to enhance the comprehension of English vocabulary among junior high school students. The selection of this particular group is based on their active cognitive development, as outlined by Bujuri (2018). Employing a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, the research involved two experimental groups: one receiving the treatment and the other serving as a comparison. The findings revealed significant improvements in the experimental group, with an average post-test score of 79,39, compared to the control group's score of 72.58. This disparity underscores the effectiveness of class-based contextual learning methods in enhancing the understanding of English vocabulary. From a practical standpoint, the aim of this research is to offer alternative teaching approaches to educators, enabling students to learn beyond the confines of the traditional classroom. This method proves highly effective in the current era, as it introduces a new learning environment, particularly in fostering enthusiasm for English vocabulary acquisition. Outing class-based learning offers the advantage of strengthening the relationship between subject matter and real-world contexts, thereby providing a more meaningful learning experience for students.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of bilingual education programs on English language development among students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Bilingual education programs use both the student's native language and English as mediums of instruction, aiming to develop bilingualism, biliteracy, and academic achievement. Key findings suggest that well-implemented bilingual programs contribute positively to English language development, with students achieving comparable or superior levels of proficiency compared to monolingual English-only programs. Bilingual education enhances metalinguistic awareness, facilitating the transfer of literacy skills from the native language to English, and provides cognitive benefits like improved executive function and problem-solving skills. It also fosters a more inclusive learning environment, enhancing students' self-esteem and motivation. Socio-cultural benefits, such as increased cultural awareness and sensitivity, promote a positive attitude towards learning English and other languages. However, the effectiveness of bilingual education programs depends on factors like program quality, teacher proficiency, and socio-political context. Future studies should explore best practices and address challenges to optimize the benefits of bilingual education.

Abstract

One of the most essential skills is writing. Writing functions as a medium for someone to express their thoughts and points of view, and it is an essential instrument for communication. Writing can not only be done individually but can also be done by more than one person to produce jointly written work, or what can be called collaborative writing. In today's learning, technology-based media is often used. One of the media that can be used for collaborative writing is Padlet. Padlet is an online site that facilitates teachers' and students' learning and is very suitable for collaborative learning, such as collaborative writing. This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method with 33 students in class X-12 as the experimental class and 33 students in class X.10 as the control class at SMAN 1 Puri school, Mojokerto. Researchers used pre-test and post-test as data collection techniques to determine the effectiveness of collaborative writing using Padlet by increasing students' writing skills between before and after the treatment was given. In this study, researchers found an increase in post-test scores in the experimental class that received treatment using Padlet. Calculating the T-test for two sample variants with the same assumptions shows that the T count value of 1.997 is smaller than the T table, namely 2.631. This shows that collaborative writing using the Padlet website is effective for applying in learning writing.
