Abstract

In the context of Indonesia and several regions in Asia, including Africa, the sarung and peci play a significant role as cultural artifacts with both material and non-material value. This research explores the correlation between the sarung and peci with forming individual and collective identities, particularly within religious communities, such as the santri. Through a perennial philosophy approach, we analyze the role of religion in the cultural acculturation process among the santri. The study results indicate that the sarung and peci are symbols of religious expression and shape a collective identity that encompasses both esoteric and exoteric aspects. Additionally, there is a dualism in the symbolic structure built through the cultural acculturation of the santri, where the sarung and peci become symbolic representations of moral transcendence that distinguish them from the general populace

Abstract

In reality, the Muslim population in Western countries is increasing significantly every year. By 2030, it is projected that the world's Muslim population will reach 2.2 billion with a growth rate of 24.9%. Muslims living in Western countries live their lives as a minority group, they are faced with various complex challenges, ranging from worship issues, and muamalah, to marriage issues. This paper aims to examine the development, challenges, and problems faced by Muslim minorities living in Western countries, and how fiqh responds in providing solutions to all issues faced by Muslim minorities living in non-Muslim majority areas. This research method uses normative legal research, namely legal research that focuses on analyzing the text of laws and regulations, legal decisions, or other legal sources. The primary data is taken from classical and contemporary books, books, and reputable journals that discuss the problems of Muslim minorities in non-Muslim majority countries. The results of this study show that the presence of Muslims in Western countries poses a major challenge, namely changing the negative views of Western countries towards Islam which is considered an extreme and terrorist religion. Four serious issues are often faced by Muslim minorities: eating food slaughtered by non-Muslims, receiving inheritance from non-Muslims, marital relations between people of different religions, and wishing non-Muslims happy holidays. Although there is still debate among scholars regarding the issue of 'food from non-Muslim slaughter', they choose not to allow consuming food from non-Muslims based on the rule of shad al-zari'ah (closing opportunities). Apart from this, in the context of citizenship, Muslim minorities have six obligations towards the state, namely preaching, implementing basic religious laws, maintaining Islamic law, assisting the development of the state, establishing good relations between communities, and not rebelling against the state.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the influence of halal products and halal labels on Generation Z's purchasing decisions, considering product quality, brand perception, and price as mediating variables. The trend of increasing awareness of halal products among young consumers, this study focuses on the role of these factors in shaping purchasing decisions. The research method used is quantitative with a survey approach, involving 523 respondents from five districts and cities in East Java (Jombang, Kediri City, Kediri Regency, Tulungagung, and Trenggalek) selected through purposive sampling. The results showed that halal products affect product quality, which in turn affects purchasing decisions through price. Halal labelling, although it has an effect on brand perception, does not show a direct effect on price or purchasing decisions through brand perception and price. This study provides new insights into how halal, quality and price factors are interrelated in influencing Generation Z's purchasing behaviour, as well as the importance of product quality as a key factor in halal value-oriented purchasing decisions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contestation, patterns, and forms of social movements among Gen Z Muslims in the era of digital citizenship. In this era, social movements are shaped by issue-based networks, and the key actors driving this transformation are Gen Z activists—particularly Muslim university students affiliated with Islamic student organizations. This article focuses on two main objectives: (1) to analyze the social contestation of Gen Z Muslim movements in the digital citizenship era and (2) to examine the patterns and forms of these movements in relation to their religious identity. This study employs a qualitative research method, with research subjects drawn from Islamic student organizations in Bandung and Pangkalpinang. Data collection techniques include: first, interviews, which were conducted to explore participants' perspectives on the ideology and activities of their movements; second, participatory observation, used to understand internal dynamics, patterns of interaction, and activism practices among Gen Z Muslims; and third, social media observation, utilized to analyze datasets from online platforms. The findings reveal two main categories of Gen Z Muslim social movements in the digital citizenship era: moderate and non-moderate. Moderate movements primarily focus their digital activism on issues of religious tolerance, inclusivity, interfaith dialogue, social justice, gender equality, and minority rights. In contrast, non-moderate movements center their activism on exclusive and conservative religious discourse, often using hashtags such as #Khilafah and #Hijrah as part of their outreach. These movements also tend to idolize figures advocating for religious purification and hijrah (religious migration). Furthermore, the patterns and forms of Gen Z Muslim social movements in the digital citizenship era are characterized by two key practices: volunteerism and crowdfunding, both of which serve as mechanisms for social engagement and mobilization.

Abstract

This study analyzed the mediamorphosis of Aula Magazine from a postcolonial perspective to examine how an Islam Nusantara media outlet maintained its existence, cultural identity, and epistemic autonomy amid the hegemony of global digital media. Mediamorphosis was conceptualized as a process of negotiating the epistemic position of local Islamic media within a digital landscape dominated by Western media values and knowledge structures. A qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm was employed. Data were collected through interviews with key participants and documentation of Aula Magazine’s transformation and were analyzed inductively to identify the strategic dimensions of mediamorphosis. The findings indicated that Aula implemented three main strategies. First, co-evolution was achieved by expanding its presence across digital platforms and social media to create alternative spaces for Islamic discourse. Second, convergence was realized through the development of the majalahaula.id news portal, which integrated journalism, da’wah, and Islam Nusantara perspectives. Third, complexity was reflected in audience participation, contributor engagement, and content designed to attract younger readers. These strategies demonstrated that Aula’s mediamorphosis not only sustained its institutional existence but also functioned as symbolic resistance to digital colonialism by preserving and disseminating Indonesian Islamic knowledge. The study’s novelty lay in interpreting mediamorphosis as a strategy for both symbolic resistance and epistemic survival.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the thoughts of Ibn Rushd, particularly regarding the concept of the relationship between Sharia (religion) and Hikmah (philosophy) through the principle of double truth, and to explore its potential as a philosophical foundation for the development of integrative knowledge in Islamic Religious Higher Education (PTKI). This study also seeks to address the stigma that views Ibn Rushd as being in opposition to Islamic orthodoxy as upheld by al-Ghazali. By employing a qualitative approach through content analysis of Ibn Rushd’s major works on demonstrative philosophy (burhani reasoning), this research explores the relevance of his thought in integrating religious and general sciences within PTKI. A contextual analysis is conducted to understand the challenges and opportunities for applying his philosophy in Indonesia, where it has received relatively little attention compared to the Western world. The findings indicate that Ibn Rushd’s demonstrative philosophy, which emphasizes demonstrative logic and empirical observation, offers a robust methodological framework to support the integration of knowledge within PTKI. The burhani approach can serve as an epistemological foundation that bridges the dichotomy between religious and general sciences while contributing to the development of a holistic curriculum. This study provides a theoretical contribution by reaffirming the relevance of Ibn Rushd’s thought in shaping a rational and empirical paradigm of Islamic higher education. Additionally, it opens a space for discussion on the role of Islamic philosophy in addressing the challenges of religious education in the modern era.

Abstract

This research aims to examine Islamic economics as a driver of creativity among farming groups in response to the green economy era. This is because the link between the agricultural sector and the green economy is relevant to achieving the balance of nature and the environment, which are fundamental values of Islamic economics. Islamic economics is intended to guide every policy and activity in the economic sector. Furthermore, the relationship between the economic sector and agriculture is inextricable when the agricultural sector's primary objective is to generate profit. This research uses a qualitative approach, drawing on primary and secondary data collected from farmer groups in the districts of Tulungagung, Trenggalek and Blitar, to examine their efforts to be creative. The collected data is presented descriptively and analysed using the concept of content analysis through the lens of Islamic economics. The findings of this study indicate that: (1) Strategies to increase the creativity of farmer groups in the Tulungagung, Trenggalek and Blitar regencies when facing green economy policies include implementing various innovative sustainable agricultural practices. (2) Implementing Islamic economic concepts to strengthen the creativity of farmer groups in these districts in the face of green economy policies has led to a significant transformation in agricultural practices. This research suggests the potential integration of Islamic economic principles as a normative basis for formulating sustainable agricultural policies, particularly in enhancing the creative capacity of farming communities to adapt to the challenges of the green economy era.

Abstract

The phenomenon of bullying in schools destroys the learning atmosphere and harms students' mental and emotional development. Even though Islamic character education has been implemented as part of the curriculum, cases of bullying still arise. This research aims to explore the implementation of Islamic character education in overcoming bullying behavior at SDIT Lampu Iman. Using qualitative methods and a case study approach, this research reveals that Islamic character education integrated into the curriculum and daily activities effectively reduces bullying incidents. This program involves important elements such as special training for teachers to recognize and handle bullying behavior and parental involvement in supporting Islamic character values at home. In addition, the school implements a safe and confidential reporting system for students who are victims or witnesses of bullying, so that they feel comfortable reporting incidents that occur. The research results showed a significant reduction in bullying incidents and positive changes in student behavior, such as increased empathy, solidarity, and cooperation. Hopefully, this research can significantly contribute to the development of Islamic character education programs in Integrated Islamic schools, creating a safe, supportive, and conducive learning environment for students' optimal development.

Abstract

This paper aims to explain the formation of piety among the urban Muslim middle class, which seeks to achieve a non-secular social life. The practice of providing free lunch on Fridays is widespread among the middle class, especially in residential mosques. This phenomenon appears as a new form of piety that not only shapes religious class formations but also serves as an effort to achieve social class ethics. To achieve this objective, this study relies on qualitative data collected through observations at Bunda Mosque in Yogyakarta, a mosque located in a middle-class residential area. This research finds; First, the Muslim middle class constructs collective piety through rituals, wealth distribution and charity for those performing Friday rituals. The Friday free lunch practice is a direct interpretation of the Sunnah and an act of benefiting others. Second, this practice has an orientation toward achieving a non-secular life, which is not merely about the circulation of economic commodities but also involves the purification of wealth and religio-sociological ethics within the Muslim middle class. This study holds significance for the formation of class-based piety through the redistribution of welfare and offers a religious-sociological ethic that critically challenges the dominance of secular norms in urban space.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd employs language as a site of power and resistance in the reinterpretation of Islamic texts and the promotion of religious pluralism. It focuses on how his linguistic-hermeneutical approach challenges dominant literalist paradigms and contributes to the development of inclusive Islamic theology. The research adopts a qualitative methodology through textual analysis of Abu Zayd’s major works, complemented by a critical discourse analysis (CDA) framework. Key concepts such as language, power, and authority in interpretation are examined to understand how Abu Zayd reconstructs religious meaning within the context of sociopolitical realities. The findings reveal that Abu Zayd’s philosophy of language subverts literalist and hegemonic interpretations by promoting a dynamic, context-sensitive, and pluralistic reading of Islamic texts rooted in lived human experience. His hermeneutics exposes the embedded power relations in religious discourse and offers a critical lens for deconstructing interpretative authority. By foregrounding the role of language in shaping theological narratives, this study contributes to the decolonization of Islamic discourse and highlights Abu Zayd’s hermeneutics as a foundation for developing an emancipatory and pluralist Islamic theology, particularly relevant for Muslim communities beyond the dominant Arab-Western paradigms. This research contributes to the decolonization of Islamic studies by demonstrating how linguistic awareness and interpretive plurality can challenge hegemonic discourses, reclaim interpretative agency, and open new spaces for contextual and inclusive Islamic thought, especially within postcolonial Muslim societies.
