Abstract

This study analyzes language errors within the surface strategy taxonomy found in observation report texts written by tenth-grade students of class X.2 at SMAN 6 Tambun Selatan. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the data were collected from writing assignments completed by 32 students as representative samples. The focus of this study is to identify four types of errors based on Tarigan’s theory (2021): omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The results of the analysis reveal a total of 26 identified errors. These findings consist of 8 omission errors, 12 addition errors, 3 misformation errors, and 3 misordering errors. The most dominant type of error is addition, with 12 instances. This indicates that students tend to use words excessively or redundantly, which results in sentences that are less coherent and less efficient. Overall, this study describes how students’ limited understanding of linguistic rules affects the quality of their factual writing in composing observation reports.

Abstract

Novel The Miracle of Namiya Grocery Store is a literary work that depicts magical realism through its characters and narrative events. The story presents unique characters and magical phenomena that involve the disruption of time, space, and identity, creating a blend of reality and fantasy. This research focuses on the interactions between the characters and the magical events they experience in the grocery store, which serves as a medium for communication across time. This study applies to a sociological approach to literature, using the theory of magical realism. Data were collected through heuristic semiotic reading and analyzed using hermeneutic semiotic reading. The results reveal six main characteristics of magical realism: irreducible elements, a phenomenal world, disturbing doubts, the fusion of realism and magic, the disruption of time and space, and a moral message conveyed through magical events. Magical elements—such as the letter from the past—serve as a subtle yet powerful way to convey moral values such as empathy, hope, forgiveness, and solidarity. This research concludes that magical realism not only enriches the story aesthetically but also deepens its moral impact. This study is expected to support literary learning, inspire further research on local magical traditions, and assist educators in developing materials that enhance students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Short stories often present an in-depth portrait of life through the thoughts, feelings, and behavior of the characters. The short story Ihwal Nama Majid Pucuk presents a story related to the psychological problems of its characters. The main character of the short story experiences both physical and mental conflicts. This study aims to reveal the psychology of the characters in the short story Ihwal Nama Majid Pucuk by Agus Khaidir which is analyzed from the aspects of id, ego, and superego. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis method with a literary psychology approach of Sigmund Freud's theory. The data for this study are in the form of quotations of sentences that represent the psychology of the short story characters. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was carried out by recording/recording data and the analysis process. The results of the study show that elements of id, ego, and superego exist in the short story Ihwal Nama Majid Pucuk by Agus Khaidir. The character Abdul Majid shows a strong balance between emotional drives (id), self-control processes (ego), and moral values he holds (superego). Abdul Majid's id aspect appears in the form of the urge to satisfy feelings of anger, revenge, maintain self-esteem, and the desire to avenge his suffering. The ego aspect is evident through his ability to control his actions, adapt to his social environment, and display rational reactions to various pressures and conflicts. The superego, meanwhile, encourages Abdul Majid to demand a just and moral resolution, rather than resorting to violence. This research is expected to increase readers' interest and motivation in understanding the psychology of characters in literary works, allowing them to learn lessons for real life.

Abstract

The Process-Based Differentiated Short Story Writing Instruction Model (PDSSW) was developed to address students’ learning difficulties in learning to write short stories. The development of the model considered students’ individual characteristics as well as the stages of the writing process. This study aimed to develop and examine the effectiveness of the PDSSW model in improving students’ writing skills. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method based on the Borg and Gall model and was conducted at the senior high school level. Data was collected through observations, questionnaires, and assessments using pre-tests and post-tests. The PDSSW model consists of eight instructional syntax stages. The effectiveness of the model was tested using a paired-samples t-test and the N-Gain score. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ writing skills, with the average post-test score increasing from 73,42 to 89,16. These findings indicate that the PDSSW model is an effective instructional model that not only enhances writing skills but also promotes creative thinking. This model contributes to the development of knowledge in the field of writing instruction through the integration of a process-based approach and differentiated learning, while also providing practical benefits for teachers, curriculum developers, and educational stakeholders in improving the quality of literacy instruction. More broadly, this model contributes to the strengthening of literacy culture, the development of students’ creativity, and the enhancement of language competencies that are relevant to societal needs and educational challenges.

Abstract

The Lambitu community is a speech community that respects the norms and language rules practiced within society. This research aims to analyze Awareness of Language Norms as A Factor in the Maintenance of the Inge Ndai Language Within the Kinship Domain of the Lambitu Community. This research is qualitative. The data in this research consists of utterances that reflect the awareness of the norm. The data source consisted of the utterances of Inge Ndai speakers in the kinship domain. The data were collected using non-participant observation with recording and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using the identity method. The research findings indicate the awareness of norms factors as a form of Inge Ndai language maintenance in the kinship domain. Awareness of language norms is evident in the utterances spoken by close relatives: fathers, mothers, aunts, and sisters-in-law. Awareness of the language norm is also reflected in specific forms of Inge Ndai utterances, such as: (1) response particles (e.g., ’uu’ and ’ae’), (2) kinship terms of address (e.g., ’aa’, ’ama’, ’ipe’, ’ela’, ’dua’, and ’baba’), and (3) personal pronominal terms of address (e.g., ’rae’, ’eme’, and ’emera’). The benefits of this research: (1) to serve as a reference for future researchers in the field of sociolinguistics that investigates minority languages, (2) to enrich knowledge regarding regional language and the importance of maintenance, specifically the minority language with limited speakers.

Abstract

The use of abbreviations and acronyms is a common phenomenon in the Indonesian language that has developed since the 1960s, particularly in military contexts. This usage has spread to various fields such as social, political, economic, cultural, and religious areas, making it an essential part of everyday communication in Indonesia. However, excessive and inconsistent abbreviation often leads to confusion. The Arabic language also has abbreviations and acronyms, but their number is far from fewer compared to Indonesian. The main challenge in translating abbreviations from Indonesian to Arabic lies in the differing characteristics of abbreviation formation between the two languages. Abbreviations in Arabic are generally based on root words or specific prefixes, which makes them different from the more flexible abbreviations in Indonesian. This study examines the challenges of translating abbreviations and acronyms in the official speeches of Indonesian President Joko Widodo from Indonesian to Arabic. Data shows that around 40% of translation errors in official speeches are due to incorrect translation of abbreviations and acronyms. A survey of specialized translators reveals that approximately 78% of them face difficulties in translating abbreviations and acronyms from Indonesian to Arabic. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to understand and address the challenges in translating abbreviations and acronyms from Indonesian to Arabic.

Abstract

Contemporary language learning requires a learner-centered approach that is responsive to cognitive diversity and learners’ cultural backgrounds. This study aims to analyze the needs of students and lecturers regarding the development of a Multiple Intelligences (MI)-based language learning model integrated with Maluku culture. A descriptive-exploratory survey design was employed, involving 108 students and 21 lecturers from the Department of Language and Arts at Pattimura University. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire assessing awareness, preferences, readiness, and the need for institutional support, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that students demonstrate a high level of awareness of multiple intelligence, a strong preference for creative, multimodal, and project-based learning, and a positive attitude toward the integration of local culture in language learning. Meanwhile, lecturers exhibit strong support for the implementation of MI-based pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching; however, they still face constraints related to the availability of learning resources and institutional support. These findings underscore the importance of developing a language learning model that contextually integrates multiple intelligences and local culture. Theoretically, this study contributes by integrating the MI approach and culture-based pedagogy within a needs analysis framework, which have often been examined separately. Practically, the findings provide a foundation for the development of more inclusive, contextual, and learner-responsive language curricula and instructional designs.

Abstract

In interpersonal communication, language skills are important to improve. However, this is difficult to apply to children with special needs, such as autism. Therefore, the purpose of the study is that the author wants to know the extent to which autistic students are able to articulate phonetic sounds and basic words correctly. In addition, this study also aims to determine the ability of sufferers to understand a concept instructed by the teacher. For this research method, the approach used is a qualitative study. Data collection was carried out by observation, interviews, and documentation of autistic students' speech accompanied by their teachers. Furthermore, the collected data will be analyzed. Data analysis was carried out using a qualitative descriptive method with a psycholinguistic analysis knife of the theory of child language acquisition, production, and use. The results of the study showed that autistic students with the category of being able to learn have better language skills. They can pronounce similar bilabial sounds, such as /p/ and /b/, count, and recognize concepts with instructions although they are still imperfect. Of course, this is caused by the child's lack of focus because there are other things he wants.

Abstract

Literary works are expressions of human thought conveyed through aesthetic language. This study analyzes the intrinsic elements of the novel Ada Apa Dengan Aku, Kalian, dan Garis Tuhan by Sri Wahyuni using a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings indicate that the novel highlights the influence of the environment on the formation of a child’s character, leading to self-awareness through a mother’s affection. The narrative is structured with a progressive plot and reinforced by elements of characterization, setting, first-person point of view, and figurative language. These intrinsic elements collectively create a harmonious narrative, with a religious family background serving as a crucial factor in character development and conflict, while conveying moral values of responsibility, honesty, and courage in self-improvement.
