Abstract

This study aims to describe the practice of writing fanfiction as a form of digital literacy and its role indeveloping creative writing skills among undergraduate students of Indonesian Language and LiteratureEducation (PBSI) at Surabaya State University. Using a qualitative case study design, the research involved 19 students who have experience in writing fanfiction. Data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire that explored the types of fanfiction chosen, obstacles encountered, and strategies applied to overcome these obstacles. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that Alternative Universe (AU) is the most preferred type of fanfiction because it offers flexibility inexploring narrative possibilities and personal experiences. The main obstacles faced by students includetechnical difficulties in structuring narratives, limited ideas, time management problems, lowmotivation, limited access to relevant references, and challenges in conveying emotions. To addressthese constraints, students employ various strategies such as regular writing practice, referenceexploration, structured time management, and seeking support from online communities and academicenvironments. This study highlights fanfiction writing as a meaningful digital literacy practice that canbe integrated into creative writing pedagogy for prospective Indonesian language teachers.

Abstract

This study focuses on translation ideology in rendering cultural words from Sundanese into English in atranslated book by Julian Millie entitled People’s Religion, focusing on Sundanese sermons by theIndonesian preacher AF Ghazali. We investigate how cultural terms are translated and what ideologicalstances are reflected through the strategies used. The analysis employs a qualitative descriptive methodwith data drawn from 70 culturally specific words. The study uses Newmark’s (1988) taxonomy ofcultural categories and integrates translation strategies from multiple theorists to identify patterns.Venuti’s (1995) concept of foreignization and domestication is used as the primary ideologicalframework, supported by Hatim and Mason’s (1997) critical discourse approach to interpret thetranslator’s decisions. Importantly, this study introduces a third category, which is a hybrid ideology, toaccommodate cases where mixed strategies are used, reflecting the translator’s flexible negotiationbetween source and target culture. The findings from 70 data samples reveal that domestication (30 data) is the most dominant ideology, followed by foreignization (25 data), and hybrid ideology (15 data).These results demonstrate that the translator tends to prioritize readability and accessibility for thetarget readers yet also retains some cultural authenticity when deemed necessary. The findings suggestthat translation of cultural words is a deeply ideological process that requires critical strategy selectionto balance cultural authenticity with reader accessibility.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the readability and semantic equivalence in the translation of a bilingualchildren’s book entitled The Amazing Invisible Tiger. The primary focus lies in how meaning from thesource text is transferred into the target language while considering the characteristics of child readers,particularly in terms of sentence structure, word choice, language style, emotional expression, andcultural context. A qualitative descriptive method was employed to analyze the translation data, withspecific categories including sentence length and complexity, lexical familiarity, child – appropriatelanguage style, as well as lexical accuracy, emotional nuance, and cultural adaptation. The findingsindicate that while most of the translations are lexically accurate, several shifts and shortcomingsremain in the expressive style and cultural relevance, which affect readability and reader engagement.Overly literal translations tend to produce rigid and emotionally flat sentences, reducing the story’sappeal for children. Furthermore, the lack of cultural adaptation contributes to narrative dissonancewithin the local context. These findings highlight the importance of a multidimensional approach inchildren’s book translation one that not only emphasizes accuracy but also ensures the languageremains vivid, emotionally engaging, and relatable to children’s linguistic and social experiences. Thisresearch is expected to contribute to children’s translation practices and offer insights into strategies that are more responsive to the psychological needs of young readers.

Abstract

The mass media plays an important role in shaping public perceptions of tourism crises, especially whenthe tragedy involves foreign tourists and has the potential to affect a country's international image. Thisstudy aims to analyze and compare the framing patterns of Detik.com and Kompas.com in reporting thetragedy of the fall of a Brazilian tourist, Juliana Marins, on Mount Rinjani. The urgency of this study liesin the still limited comparative studies of Indonesian media framing in cases of tourism crises that havea global impact, whereas media construction in situations like this can influence internationalperceptions of Indonesia's ability to handle adventure tourism. This study uses a qualitative approachwith a content analysis method based on Robert N. Entman's framing model. The results show thatDetik.com tends to frame the tragedy in the context of digital diplomatic conflict and netizen emotionalstress, while Kompas.com emphasizes the dimensions of safety, evacuation procedures, andinstitutional reflection. These differences are influenced by the editorial orientation, audiencesegmentation, and journalism style of each media. This study contributes to the development of mediaframing studies and offers practical implications for crisis communication and more responsiblejournalism in the digital era.

Abstract

The study of masculinity in Indonesian literature plays a crucial role in revealing the dynamics of maleidentity and its relationship with patriarchal culture. This research aims to map the patterns and trendsof studies on masculinity within the realm of Indonesian literature using a bibliometric approach. Datawere collected from Google Scholar using the keyword “maskulinitas dalam sastra Indonesia” within thetime range of 2015–2025 through the Publish or Perish application. A total of 92 relevant articles wereanalyzed using VOSviewer to visualize keyword networks and term developments. The analysis resultsshow a significant increase in the number of publications, particularly in 2023 and 2024. The most citedarticles discuss the reconstruction of masculinity in relation to gender equality and its representationacross various media, such as novels, films, folklore, and online comics. The most dominant keywordsare “masculinity,” “representation,” and “novel.” The bibliometric visualization illustrates a shift in thefocus of studies from basic gender and patriarchy concepts toward contemporary masculinity andpopular media issues. This study indicates that masculinity has increasingly gained attention in the fieldof Indonesian literary studies, with a growing tendency toward interdisciplinary thinking and popularmedia analysis. These findings are expected to serve as a starting point for deeper and more systematicresearch development in the fields of literary sociology and gender studies.

Abstract

The phenomenon of using softened and indirect language in digital communication has drawn attentionin sociolinguistic studies, particularly in the context of netizen comments on public figures. This studyaims to identify the forms and functions of euphemisms employed by netizens in response to parentingcontent on Nikita Willy's YouTube channel. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method and discourseanalysis approach, the data were drawn from 30 purposively selected netizen comments. The analysisof euphemism forms is based on the classification proposed by Allan and Burridge, while the functionsare examined using Burridge’s framework. The results show that eight types of euphemisms werecommonly used: metaphor, figurative expression, colloquialism, abbreviation and acronym,circumlocution, jargon, omission, and one-for-one substitution. Among these, figurative expressionsappeared most frequently. In terms of function, the euphemisms identified serve protective, cohesive,booster, deceitful, and humorous purposes. These findings suggest that netizens tend to useeuphemisms as a linguistic strategy to maintain politeness, foster solidarity, and convey criticism subtlyin discussions around parenting an issue laden with values and social norms. This research contributesto a deeper understanding of language dynamics in digital public spaces, especially in parentingdiscourse involving female public figures.

Abstract

This article investigates how stigma around so-called “gang hand signs” is produced, circulated, andnegotiated in TikTok comments. Drawing on a case-bounded corpus of 675 comments posted under fivevideos from the account TopNotch Idiots (posted in 2023; comments captured in 2025), the analysisintegrates critical sociolinguistics and language-ideological perspectives with the concepts ofenregisterment and platformed racism. We operationalize a two-layer coding scheme: stigma processes(labeling, stereotyping, separation/status loss, discrimination) and sociolinguistic lenses (indexicals ofrisk, digital gatekeeping, platformed racism cues, moral-panic rhetoric). Findings show that gestures areenregistered as a default “danger register,” normalizing punitive discourse (“deserve to get hurt”);commenters perform outsider exclusion and moral boundary-making; and racialized/locational cuesalign with platformed racism, intensified by platform affordances and virality. We discuss implicationsfor critical media literacy and English language pedagogy in Indonesia, arguing that user-generateddiscourse not only mainstream media now participates in the production of stigma and public moralities.The study contributes to research on indexicality, platform governance, and digital vigilantism, andsuggests ethics-oriented classroom practices for interrogating harmful registers online.

Abstract

This study reframes uncertainty in translator cognition by proposing a Quantum Translation (QT)heuristic superposition, collapse, and entanglement as a probabilistic lexicon for process analysis. Usinga PRISMA-consistent systematic literature review, we screened records from Scopus, Crossref, andGoogle Scholar (2020–2025) via database queries and citation chasing, yielding 22 empirical studies.Data extraction targeted instruments used in primary studies (e.g., eye tracking, key logging, screencapture) and findings were synthesized thematically. Across the corpus, uncertainty is acknowledged ascentral yet treated implicitly as ambiguity, difficulty, or risk. Product-focused evaluation routinelyobscures process-level signals such as cognitive load, recursive drafting, and attentional control. QTaddresses this gap by modeling (i) superposition as coexisting candidate renderings, (ii) collapse ascontext-triggered resolution constrained by skopos, register, and pragmatics, and (iii) entanglement ascross-level dependencies linking lexical, syntactic, and discourse decisions. The review also chartsconvergences between human process traces and computational predictors (e.g., surprisal), informing risk-aware human AI workflows. We contribute a testable heuristic and implications: integrate QT-informed diagnostics in translator education; report AI use transparently; and adopt evaluation models that combine process and product. Together, these steps strengthen accountability and professional preparedness for human AI collaboration.
