Abstract

This study examines the historical development of education in Malaysia, which has undergone a shift from the traditional pondok system to modern religious schools. This change was influenced by various factors, including social dynamics, colonial influence, and societal demands for a more structured and relevant education system. This study aims to explain this development process and identify the various factors driving this change. The research employed a qualitative approach through literature review, utilizing various sources, books, journals, and scientific documents, which were analyzed descriptively to gain a deeper understanding. The results show that the pondok system, which was initially informal and simple, even focusing only on teaching religious knowledge and moral development, underwent changes due to the influence of colonialism, the development of Western education, and the increasing societal need for formal education. This change gave rise to modern madrasahs and religious schools with more structured curricula, integrating religious and general knowledge, and implementing more systematic methods. The findings of this study confirm that this development did not completely eliminate the pondok system, but rather developed it into a more comprehensive educational system, enabling Islamic education in Malaysia to remain steadfast in Islamic values and adapt to modern demands.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of instilling character based on local Islamic boarding school (pesantren) values in formal educational institutions to protect students from moral degradation amid contemporary social challenges. The study aims to examine the process of internalizing the Panca Jiwa values sincerity, simplicity, self-reliance, Islamic brotherhood, and freedom among students at MTs Yapika Petanahan, Kebumen, as well as to identify the supporting factors, inhibiting factors, and impacts of their implementation. This research employed a qualitative field study approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques. The findings reveal that the internalization of Panca Jiwa values is carried out through habituation, role modeling (uswah hasanah), religious activities, and the integration of values into the daily culture of the madrasah. Although these values are not formally stated in the curriculum, they are consistently embedded in students’ learning experiences and social interactions. The primary supporting factor is the strong synergy between the madrasah and the surrounding pesantren environment, which creates a religious and value-oriented educational ecosystem. Meanwhile, the main obstacle is the limited interaction time experienced by students who do not reside in the pesantren. The implementation of Panca Jiwa values has a positive impact on students by strengthening discipline, fostering independence, encouraging social responsibility, and developing inclusive attitudes in everyday life.

The findings show that gadget use restrictions are implemented systematically through rule-setting, supervision, and evaluation. The policy does not prohibit gadget use entirely but regulates it according to time, function, and purpose. The results indicate that the restriction has a positive impact on students’ learning achievement by improving concentration, strengthening time-management discipline, increasing participation in learning activities, and enhancing understanding of learning materials. In addition, a more conducive learning environment is created due to reduced distractions from gadget use. However, the effects are not experienced equally by all students, as some still face challenges related to self-awareness and self-control. Supporting factors include clear regulations, consistent supervision, teacher support, and a conducive boarding school environment, while inhibiting factors include low discipline, peer influence, gadget dependency, limited supervision, and easy access to technology. Overall, gadget use restrictions contribute positively to improving students’ learning achievement.

Abstract

Low student interest in Islamic Religious Education subjects is one of the obstacles found in fifth-grade students at SDN Sukaharaja 3. This situation manifests as students' lack of attention during learning, rapid fatigue, and limited participation in educational activities. Strategies have been adopted to address this problem through the use of audiovisual materials that make the learning process more interesting and participatory. This study aims to investigate the use of audiovisual resources to increase the interest of fifth-grade students at SDN Sukaharaja 3. This study uses a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, which takes place in two cycles, each including the planning, implementation, observation, and reflection phases. Data collection is carried out through observation, testing, documentation, and assessment to measure student interest. The results of the study indicate that the use of audiovisual resources can increase student interest. In the first cycle, the average student engagement score reached 65% in the "sufficient" category, while in the second cycle it increased to 78% in the "good" catgory. Similarly, students' cognitive learning achievement also increased, obtaining an average score of 86, which is considered very good. The use of audiovisual materials encourages greater engagement, concentration, and enthusiasm in the educational process. Therefore, audiovisual media can be an effective alternative to increase students' interest and understanding in basic education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare character education in the Indonesian national curriculum with moral education in Japan. The study is motivated by the growing importance of character development in addressing global challenges and overcoming the issue of moral degradation among students. A qualitative approach with a comparative study method was employed. Data were collected through literature reviews and documentation of curriculum documents, books, and scientific journals. The data were analyzed using descriptive-comparative techniques focusing on values, educational approaches, implementation methods, evaluation systems, and cultural influences within both countries. The findings reveal that character education in Indonesia is implemented integratively across learning activities and contains diverse moral values. However, challenges remain in ensuring consistent implementation and effective value habituation. In contrast, moral education in Japan is more structured and systematic, emphasizing habit formation and the practical application of moral values in everyday life. This approach contributes to greater effectiveness in shaping student behavior. Furthermore, Japan’s success is supported by strong alignment between school practices and community cultural values. The study concludes that the effectiveness of character education depends not only on curriculum content but also on implementation strategies, evaluation mechanisms, and socio-cultural support. Therefore, Indonesia should strengthen character education through consistent habituation practices, reinforcement of school culture, and sustainable value implementation while maintaining respect for societal diversity.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively describe the implementation of vocational skills in fostering student independence at Al-Istiqomah Islamic Boarding School, Petanahan, Kebumen. The research focuses on vocational concepts, implementation processes, contributions to student independence, and supporting and inhibiting factors. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a field study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the vocational program is based on the independent curriculum philosophy known as “TEKWE” (Praktek Dewe), which integrates religious values with local-based independence. The program is implemented through three main business units: sewing, agriculture/livestock farming, and carpentry, conducted outside formal school and Qur’anic study hours. The implementation of vocational skills contributes significantly to the development of students’ intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and economic independence. The success of the program is supported by adequate Vocational Training Center (BLK) facilities and the active role of the Kyai as the primary motivator. However, challenges remain, including limited synchronization with the dense boarding school schedule and a marketing system that still depends on internal leadership networks. Overall, the integration of vocational skills effectively develops students who are spiritually grounded, economically competitive, and independent.
