Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of character assassination through cyberbullying on Twitter as an increasingly prominent social phenomenon in the digital era. As social media becomes a central space for public communication, individual reputations can be rapidly constructed or damaged. Character assassination on social media constitutes a form of digital violence that poses serious risks to victims’ psychological well-being and social standing. Employing a qualitative approach, this research analyzes patterns of attacks, perpetrators’ motivations, and victims’ experiences through content analysis of tweets and in-depth interviews with individuals affected by cyberbullying. The findings indicate that cyberbullying on platform X is reinforced by key features of a network society, including anonymity, rapid information circulation, and global visibility. These factors intensify psychological harm such as stress and depression, while also undermining victims’ social reputation and digital identity. Additionally, platform algorithms may unintentionally amplify negative content by prioritizing highly engaging posts. Addressing this issue requires collaborative efforts among social media platforms, government institutions, and communities through improved moderation systems, effective reporting mechanisms, and victim support services.

Abstract

This article examines how Islamic-based political communication operates as a form of political diplomacy in a pluralistic society, focusing on the case of Syeikh Ali Akbar Marbun in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The study employs a qualitative case study design based on document analysis of twenty-three sources collected between January and June 2024, including religious sermons, institutional publications from Pesantren Al-Kautsar Al-Akbar, biographical narratives, and academic writings discussing the public role of the ulama. The findings show that Syeikh Ali Akbar Marbun acts as a non-state political communicator through ethical and symbolic communication practices such as elite visits (sowan), sermons addressing leadership ethics, and informal consultations with political actors. These communicative practices function as symbolic mechanisms that reinforce moral legitimacy, encourage ethical reflection among political elites, and facilitate dialogue across religious and ethnic boundaries. The novelty of this study lies in conceptualizing ulama as ethical political communicators who perform informal diplomatic functions through symbolic and relational communication practices in plural democratic societies.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of the halo effect on students’ evaluations of communication ethics in academic interactions among students of the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (KPI) study program. The halo effect refers to students’ tendency to form initial judgments about lecturers based on first impressions such as appearance, tone of voice, and presentation style. This research employs a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore students’ lived experiences in academic communication. The participants consisted of ten KPI students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth open-ended interviews and analyzed using the phenomenological analysis procedure proposed by Moustakas, which includes horizontalization, thematic clustering, and synthesis of meanings. The findings reveal that the halo effect shapes students’ perceptions of lecturers’ credibility, competence, and communication ethics, particularly during the early stage of academic interaction. However, these perceptions tend to evolve through continued learning experiences. The study contributes to educational communication research by demonstrating how perceptual bias influences the evaluation of communication ethics in higher education.

Abstract

Public trust in political institutions has become a critical issue in emerging democracies, particularly in Southeast Asia. This study examines how organizational communication contributes to building public trust in political institutions through a comparative literature review of Indonesia and Malaysia. Using a systematic comparative review design, this research synthesizes 38 peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2025. The analysis identifies thematic patterns related to communication structure, message consistency, digital engagement, and trust formation mechanisms. Findings indicate that Indonesia demonstrates relatively strong transparency and participatory openness but faces challenges in inter-agency coordination and message alignment. Conversely, Malaysia exhibits centralized communication coherence yet encounters limitations in dialogical engagement and public responsiveness. The study proposes an Alignment–Responsiveness Framework, suggesting that sustainable public trust emerges from the interaction between internal communication coherence and external responsiveness. This framework contributes to political organizational communication scholarship and offers strategic implications for designing trust-oriented public communication strategies in developing democracies

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of internal organizational communication and conflict management at Pesantren Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah in Medan. Using a qualitative approach, the research explores how communication patterns among teaching staff function in maintaining coordination and resolving workplace conflicts. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three informants representing different organizational levels: the Vice Director, a senior teacher, and a newly appointed teacher. The findings reveal that internal communication in the pesantren is characterized by structured vertical communication reinforced by intensive horizontal interactions among teachers. Conflicts that arise are generally triggered by differences in perception, miscommunication, and coordination issues rather than deep personal disputes. The study also demonstrates that Islamic values such as musyawarah, tabayyun, ukhuwah, tasamuh, and amanah play a significant role as normative frameworks guiding communication and conflict resolution. These values shape a distinctive conflict management model that combines dialogue, mediation, and leadership authority to maintain organizational harmony and institutional stability.

Abstract

Binjai City is a region in North Sumatra with significant tourism potential. However, tourism development in Binjai City still faces several challenges. In this context, pentahelix collaboration is crucial to promote sustainable and competitive tourism development. This study aims to explore the roles of the five main actors in the pentahelix model of tourism development and identify the challenges facing tourism development in Binjai City. This study employed a qualitative approach and was conducted in Binjai City, utilizing data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results indicate that the government acts as a facilitator and regulator, academics contribute through research and policy recommendations, business actors strengthen the tourism sector, the media plays a role in promotion and image building, and communities play a role in preserving culture and encouraging public participation. However, obstacles remain, including limitations in regulations, infrastructure, promotion, budgets, human resources, and local community capacity. Therefore, tourism development in Binjai City requires stronger synergy between the pentahelix sectors to create an inclusive, innovative, and sustainable tourism ecosystem.

Abstract

This study examines the role of digital media in organizational communication in strengthening employee integrity, particularly in rejecting gratification practices within healthcare institutions. Using a qualitative case study approach at the University of North Sumatra Hospital, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving 15 informants selected purposively. The findings reveal that digital media function not only as communication tools but also as a cultural infrastructure that reinforces integrity values through continuous exposure, transparency, and interactive systems. Digital platforms such as intranet systems, integrity dashboards, and online reporting mechanisms enhance information accessibility and foster employees’ confidence in rejecting and reporting gratification. Furthermore, digital communication contributes to ethical behavior formation through cognitive recall, norm internalization, and social learning processes. This study proposes the Digital Integrity Communication Model (DICM) as a theoretical contribution, emphasizing the integration of technology, organizational values, and behavior in shaping organizational image and trust.

Abstract

This article reviews the role of interpersonal communication in improving the effectiveness of student–lecturer relationships in higher education. Using a narrative literature review approach, the study synthesizes five selected journal articles published between 2021 and 2025 that discuss lecturer–student communication, academic supervision, learning motivation, and student engagement. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication functions as a crucial relational mechanism in shaping academic trust, participation, emotional comfort, and learning effectiveness. Five major dimensions consistently emerged from the reviewed studies, namely openness, empathy, supportiveness, positive attitude, and equality. These dimensions contribute to the creation of a conducive academic environment in which students feel respected, motivated, and encouraged to participate actively. The review also shows that communication becomes increasingly important in vulnerable contexts such as thesis supervision and distance learning. Overall, interpersonal communication is not merely a supporting element of teaching, but a central factor in strengthening the quality of student–lecturer relationships.

Abstract

This article critically examines the development and contemporary relevance of three classical organizational communication theories: Scientific Management, Human Relations, and Bureaucratic Theory. Using a qualitative library research approach with a structured critical literature review, the study analyzes selected scholarly sources to compare the historical foundations, communication assumptions, epistemological contributions, and limitations of each theory. The findings show that the development of organizational communication theory is not a simple linear shift from one perspective to another, but a continuing interaction among three analytical logics: control, participation, and formal legitimacy. Scientific Management frames communication as an instrument of efficiency and supervision, Human Relations emphasizes interpersonal interaction and employee participation, and Bureaucratic Theory highlights communication as a mechanism of procedural order and accountability. The study concludes that these classical theories remain relevant in contemporary, digital, and post-bureaucratic organizations because they continue to explain how organizations negotiate ongoing productivity, collaboration, and institutional structure today.

Abstract

This study revisits the one-step flow and two-step flow theories to examine their relevance in contemporary mass communication within the digital era. Using an integrative literature review with a comparative-analytical approach, the study analyzed 28 selected sources, consisting of foundational and contemporary publications on media effects, opinion leadership, digital communication, and platform-based interaction. The findings show that the one-step flow model remains useful for explaining rapid, direct, and large-scale message dissemination, particularly in situations requiring consistency and immediacy. However, it is limited in explaining how audiences interpret, negotiate, and respond to messages within complex social environments. By contrast, the two-step flow model offers a more flexible explanation of mediated influence, especially where credibility, interpersonal communication, and social legitimacy shape message acceptance. In digital contexts, both models remain relevant but need to be reconsidered alongside multi-step flow, networked influence, algorithmic curation, and hybrid media ecologies in contemporary Indonesian communication research and practice.
