Abstract

Appa botting in makassarese means to carry out a marriage ceremony, while the term peerkawinan in bugis means to take each other, thus Marriage is a reciprocal bond between two peoplw of sifferent genders to establish a partnership. The a’barumbung tradition in Makassar is a steam bath procession carried out by the prospective bride as part of a traditional wedding ritual, which lest for three days and has deep meanings such as cleanliness, physical and spiritual preparation, and a symbol of self-purification before entering the gate of marriage. In general, this tradition is usually specifically carried out by the prospective bride as part of a series of a Appasili bunting (siraman) events, but on Kodingareng Island it is usually also carried out for the prospective groom with the aim of purifying himself and preparing himself physically and mentally for married life. The release of water from the body during this steam bath procession is interpreted as the removal of “bad things” and self-purification. A’barumbung is part of the local culture of the Makassar tribe which is still maintained in the traditional wedding procession. A’barumbung means a steam bath that is performed three days before the wedding ceremony for the prospective groom and bride. At this stage, several tools and materials need to be prepared, such as sarongs, blankets, chairs, pans, lellung, and several types of fragrant leaves. Then, the prospective bride and groom sit on chairs, where hot water has been stored with a mixture of fragrant leaves. The bride and groom are covered with several layers of sarongs or blankets. When the A’barumbung procession begins, sever family members will perform angaru (a ritual ablution) in front of the prospective bride and groom. Basically, the culture or tradition implemented and carried out by the people of Kodingareng Island are closely related to beliefs originating from their ancestors. As we already know, Kodingareng Island is the region of the Bugis-Makassar ethnic group.

Abstract

Studies on the utilization patterns of public spaces, particularly city parks, town squares, sidewalks, highways, malls, and coffee shops in urban areas, have been a topic of considerable interest among researchers. However, riverbank areas are often overlooked as opportunities for public space utilization. This study examines the strategic potential of riverbank areas, which have so far been considered merely ecological infrastructure, but which, if optimally managed through good spatial planning, can strengthen a city's identity. The research method used is a study of relevant literature and a policy review to assess the utilization model for ecological, recreational, economic, and community-based participatory aspects. The results show that the success of a city government in developing public spaces is determined by adaptive, participatory, and ecologically sustainable policies.

Abstract

Rapid technological developments, urbanization, and globalization in the contemporary era have fundamentally changed the lifestyles of urban residents. Despite increasingly easy access to information and the dominance of global culture, city dwellers face serious problems such as the fading of local traditional values, a fragility of nationalism, and the rise of individualistic and consumerist behavior. This article aims to discuss the need to strengthen cultural education for urban communities as a tactical step to preserve traditional roots while building a competitive community character. Using qualitative methods based on literature review, this article reveals that cultural education has a crucial function in: (1) fostering local wisdom values in the modern era, (2) strengthening social ties within a diverse society, (3) fostering a sense of belonging and pride in ancestral heritage, and (4) achieving a balance between technological sophistication and the preservation of human values. Strengthening cultural education is not only relevant, but has become a necessity to be integrated into various aspects of urban residents' lives, whether through formal, non-formal, or informal education. In this way, an urban society that is technologically advanced and culturally rooted can be created, so that they are able to face the challenges of the times without losing their national identity.

Abstract

Cultural Illiteracy is a condition where there is a lack of public understanding related to the diversity of traditions, values, norms, and cultural identity of the nation. This phenomenon of cultural illiteracy is one of the challenges for the younger generation in the midst of the development of digital technology and globalization trends. The younger generation tends to understand popular foreign cultures compared to local cultures, such as regional languages, cultural customs or traditions, traditional arts, and cultural values of the archipelago. This condition shows that cultural education in Indonesia is still not running optimally. This study aims to analyze cultural illiteracy in the younger generation due to the weak cultural education in Indonesia. The method used is a literature study, namely by examining relevant sources. The results of the study show that cultural illiteracy in Indonesia is characterized by the lack of knowledge of the younger generation about culture due to the lack of learning and implementation of culture in formal education. Thus, cultural education needs to be improved so that the younger generation is able to understand, and preserve national culture in the modern era.

This study aims to determine the meaning of social conflict in community life, the factors causing social conflict in society, and law enforcement efforts in creating peace and harmony in society. The research method used is descriptive research with library research. Assisted research activities are carried out by collecting information and data from various available materials. The results of the study indicate that social conflict in community life can be understood as a process of conflict that occurs due to differences in interests, values, or goals between individuals and groups. Conflict is an unavoidable part of the dynamics of social life in a pluralistic society. Therefore, a good understanding of social conflict is crucial so that society can manage conflict wisely and maintain harmony in communal life. Social conflict in society is influenced by various factors, including differences in interests, differences in values and beliefs, social inequality, rapid social change, misunderstandings in communication, and weak law enforcement. These factors are interrelated and can increase the potential for conflict if not managed properly. Therefore, efforts to prevent social conflict require a comprehensive approach, such as increasing dialogue between community groups, strengthening the legal system, and reducing social inequality.
