Abstract

In higher education, the experiences of historically marginalized and underrepresented students are often undervalued, challenged, or ignored. Counselor educators must actively advocate within predominantly white, heteronormative, and cisgender-centered training environments by leading initiatives that decolonize the classroom and center liberation. The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce, Liberatory Anti-Oppression in Counselor Education, a culturally responsive pedagogical framework designed to infuse anti-oppressive, antiracist, and liberation-based practices into counselor training. To develop this framework, we conducted a review of peer-reviewed scholarly literature from academic journals. The result of this inquiry is a structured approach for counselor educators to implement liberatory practices in the classroom. We conclude by calling for a shift in the counseling profession toward liberation, offering practical strategies for educators and students alike.

Abstract

This study examined the impact of poverty on the education of the girl-child in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The primary objective is to examine the effect of poverty on girl-child education in Adamawa State, the efforts put in place at reducing poverty and enhancing the girl-child education, effective are these efforts in enhancing girl- child education in the challenges militating against the efforts put in place at curbing poverty against the girl-child education in the state. The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing secondary data analyzed through content analysis and framed within the cultural feminist theoretical perspective. Findings reveal that poverty exacerbates gender disparities in education, as girls from low-income families are more vulnerable to early marriage, domestic labor, and withdrawal from school due to financial constraints. Additionally, cultural attitudes that undervalue female education and rising education costs further limit opportunities for girls. The study concludes that comprehensive and gender-sensitive interventions such as scholarship programs, community sensitization, and enhanced educational infrastructure are essential to promoting equitable access to education and breaking the cycle of poverty for the girl-child in Adamawa State.

Abstract

The digital era necessitates the adaptation of counseling services through cyber counseling innovations that enhance accessibility and flexibility for counselors. However, the absence of explicit standards poses risks such as service misuse, compromised quality, and privacy violations in cyber counseling practices. This study aims to formulate cyber counseling standards using a qualitative approach with a literature review design, analyzing relevant studies from the last five years. The findings highlight key aspects, including counselor competencies, data security, methodological flexibility, and professional ethics. Counselor competencies encompass adherence to counseling values, mastery of fundamental skills, and technological literacy. Data security emphasizes the counselor's ability to uphold confidentiality principles, primarily through the use of high-security platforms. Methodological flexibility involves tailoring counseling services to the specific needs of clients. Additionally, professional ethics serve as essential guidelines for counselors in delivering cyber counseling services. The results of this study are expected to provide a framework for counselors to conduct cyber counseling professionally and effectively while maintaining the essence of face-to-face counseling. The proposed standards will ensure service sustainability and enhance public trust in online counseling.

Abstract

A growing body of literature on broaching supports its effectiveness and addresses some challenges for applying this method to counseling practice. A thematic analysis with a phenomenological perspective was used to explore counselors’ experiences with broaching in their clinical practice to gain a greater understanding of its actual implementations in counseling. Four themes were identified through analysis of semi-structured interviews with five participants. They are: 1) demonstrating social justice and advocacy orientation as a foundation for broaching; 2) acknowledging the role of counselor self-disclosure in broaching; 3) contextual nature of broaching; and 4) commitment to engaging in ongoing development of broaching skills.

Abstract

The synonymic nature of humanistic scholarship suggests that to be a clinician with a humanistic focus, one must be an antiracist. Many practicing counselors report not receiving training on identifying and treating race-based trauma. This study, presented as a conceptual analysis, draws on secondary data sources including scholarly journals, textbooks, and online materials to propose a race-based trauma course curriculum. Methods of curriculum design include reviewing existing research, identifying critical gaps in multicultural training, and structuring content around self-awareness, knowledge, skill development, and advocacy. The discussion highlights the need for counselor educators to integrate antiracist-humanistic strategies to better prepare students for addressing race-based trauma in clinical practice. This work concludes with implications for counselor education programs to strengthen responsiveness to address training students in race-based trauma.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) identify research trends in multicultural counseling innovations based on Scopus data from 2019–2025, and (2) explore the decolonization of counseling practices through a systematic analysis of the development of multicultural competence and social justice in counseling psychology. This inquiry is particularly relevant as universal counseling models rooted in Western norms are increasingly regarded as insufficient to address the diverse needs of global societies. The focus is directed toward understanding how decolonization challenges the dominance of Western perspectives, incorporates local wisdom, and promotes the role of counselors as agents of social advocacy. A systematic literature review was conducted on 173 Scopus-indexed articles published between 2019 and 2025, with screening procedures guided by the PRISMA framework. The findings demonstrate that multicultural counseling innovations have advanced through multiple approaches, including culturally responsive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), systematic adaptation models such as the Southampton Adaptation Framework, and the integration of traditional practices rooted in indigenous communities. The study further reveals that the effectiveness of psychological interventions is largely determined by the extent of cultural adaptation, while inadequate adaptation risks reproducing bias and reinforcing social inequities. In conclusion, decolonizing counseling emerges as a transformative paradigm that emphasizes the integration of indigenous knowledge, critical awareness of systemic injustice, and the counselor’s role as a catalyst for social change. These insights carry significant implications for advancing inclusive counseling theories and developing contextually grounded practices that respond effectively to multicultural societies in the era of globalization.

Abstract

This study evaluated the validity and practicality of the Perisai Diri digital comic as a preventive medium against sexual harassment among junior high school students. Adapting the Borg and Gall research-and-development model into seven stages, the comic integrates Bandura’s Social Learning Theory, assertiveness training, and the Bugis–Makassar philosophy of Siri’ Na Pacce. Expert validation indicated very high feasibility 90 % from content experts, 96 % from media experts, and 99 % from practitioners. A practicality test with one guidance-and-counseling teacher and ten students yielded very high practicality scores (99 % and 95 %, respectively). The comic’s five stories teach body rights, assertive skills, and reporting pathways, reinforcing both self-efficacy and cultural values. These findings confirm that Perisai Diri is scientifically valid and highly practical for culturally grounded school counseling, providing an effective and replicable medium for adolescent sexual-harassment prevention.

Abstract

Stereotypes held by counselors can negatively influence the selection of service interventions and hinder the effectiveness of counseling. Therefore, strengthening multicultural understanding is essential to shaping counselor character that reflects openness, sensitivity, and responsiveness to cultural diversity. This study aims to explore the characteristics of multicultural counselors by integrating noble cultural values of the Samin tribe in Bojonegoro, Indonesia, with multicultural counseling competencies. The research employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA model. A total of 120 articles were initially collected from various sources, including journals, books, and reputable conference proceedings indexed in Scopus and Google Scholar. Following a rigorous screening process based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 articles were identified as eligible for further analysis. Data were analyzed through thematic content analysis to identify cultural values relevant to counselor competencies. The findings highlight three key values of Samin teachings: (1) angger-angger pengucap (wise use of words), which aligns with effective communication and cultural sensitivity; (2) angger-angger pertikel (appropriate behavior), which relates to ethical conduct and counselor integrity; and (3) angger-angger lakunono (adherence to norms), which supports counselors’ commitment to justice and cultural respect. These values, when applied, can enhance counselors’ multicultural competencies, particularly in fostering non-judgmental attitudes and empathy toward diverse clients. The implication of this study is that integrating local wisdom, such as the Samin tribe’s cultural values, offers a contextualized approach for developing the character of multicultural counselors, making them more relevant and effective in addressing the challenges of today’s diverse societies.

Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to validate a subjective and objective socioeconomic measure to enhance research and clinical applications of socioeconomic (SES) constructs. To further understand the measurement of Socioeconomic Status (subjective and objective) in counseling, two main research questions are investigated. First, would objective indicators of SES (education, income, etc..) result in a separate construct from subjective indicators of SES (perceived SES, etc..) using social positioning and comparison items? Second, would the objective and subjective items correlate with the Macarthur’s Scale SES? Methods: A Delphi Method was employed to develop a socioeconomic status with both objective and subjective SES items. The measure consists of 33 items including demographics (5), subjective (18), objective (2) SES status subscale and mental health (8) subscale.  Two samples (N=455) were analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). Results: The EFA’s resulted in a three-factor solution: perception of SES; perception of one’s ability to change their SES; and, objective SES. Conclusions: This study is consistent with the literature suggesting that objective and subjective SES are distinct variables. Improved methods and increased use of SES measures accounting for subjective and objective SES is needed.

Abstract

Local wisdom plays a crucial role in shaping individual mindsets, behaviors, and psychological resilience. Within the Selayar community, the Anrio Sappara tradition serves as a form of spiritual coping that helps individuals manage psychological stress through prayer, remembrance, self-purification, and collective cleansing rituals. This paper examines how multicultural Guidance and Counseling can interpret and support this cultural practice using Pargament’s psychological framework. A literature review method was employed, analyzing nine relevant scholarly articles. The findings indicate that integrating local wisdom, spiritual coping, and multicultural counseling approaches enables counselors to provide culturally sensitive and contextually meaningful services. Such integration strengthens psychological well-being, supports cultural identity, and enhances the relevance of counseling interventions for the Selayar community. The study highlights the importance of culturally grounded counseling practices as a pathway to promoting holistic well-being.
