Abstract

Stunting remains a major nutritional problem in Indonesia, including in North Bengkulu Regency, and can be prevented through exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life. Kahyapu Village, Enggano District, as an outer island area with limited access to health services, requires promotive and preventive interventions to support optimal breastfeeding practices. This community service program aimed to improve mothers’ and health cadres’ knowledge and skills regarding local food ingredients that may support breast milk production (galactagogues) and appropriate breastfeeding techniques. The program involved 16 participants consisting of 4 health cadres, 2 pregnant women, and 10 breastfeeding mothers. The implementation methods included needs assessment, nutrition education, demonstration of breastfeeding techniques, and cadre mentoring using a participatory approach. Evaluation was conducted through pre-test and post-test questionnaires as well as direct observation of breastfeeding practices. Results showed an increase in average knowledge from 75% to 93.8% after the intervention. Breastfeeding skills, especially positioning and latching, improved significantly. Health cadres also reported increased capacity to provide assistance for breastfeeding mothers, thereby strengthening program sustainability. In conclusion, this program effectively enhanced mothers’ and cadres’ capacity in optimizing breast milk production and correct breastfeeding practices, which has the potential to accelerate stunting reduction efforts in island communities.

Abstract

Stunting remains a chronic nutritional problem in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas, influenced by low intake of animal protein due to limited parental knowledge of balanced nutrition and restricted access to quality food sources. Catfish (Pangasius) as a local commodity rich in protein, essential fatty acids, and micronutrients has the potential to be an effective solution. However, children’s low interest in consuming fresh fish hinders its optimal utilization. Therefore, this community service program was implemented in Handil Birayang Bawah Village, Bumi Makmur District, Tanah Laut Regency, with the aim of improving community knowledge and skills in utilizing animal protein for stunting prevention. The innovation introduced was catfish nuggets, a nutritious processed food preferred by children. The activities included preparation (identifying materials and tools, preparing educational materials, and coordinating with PKK cadres), implementation (nutrition education, catfish nugget training, joint practice, and product trials). The program was carried out effectively, as evidenced by the increased knowledge of PKK cadres, reflected in their enthusiasm during discussions and question-and-answer sessions. Furthermore, their skills in food processing, particularly in making catfish nuggets, improved through active participation and successful practice. This innovation utilizes local potential while providing a practical and appealing nutritious food alternative, thereby contributing to child growth and stunting prevention

Abstract

Physiological adaptation of the musculoskeletal system is one of the changes that pregnant women often complain about, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy, namely back pain which has long-term impacts that increase the tendency of postpartum back pain and the risk of suffering from venous thrombosis. Several complementary therapies to reduce back pain by doing effleurage and endorphin massage. Back pain can occur at any time so that a companion who can perform massage is needed. This community service activity aims to provide training in effleurage and endorphin massage to companions of pregnant women to reduce back pain during pregnancy in the Working Area of the Syamtalira Bayu Community Health Center, North Aceh Regency. The target audience is 76 people, including 38 cadres as companions of pregnant women and 38 pregnant women in the third trimester who experience back pain during pregnancy in the Working Area of the Syamtalira Bayu Community Health Center, North Aceh Regency. The implementation of the activity began with a pre-test to explore the knowledge of the target audience, then provided education about efforts to treat back pain and trained companions of pregnant women, namely cadres, about effleurage and endorphin messages. Evaluations were conducted two weeks after the training, using a Google Form to assess back pain after efflurage and endorphin massage, and to evaluate the skills of the cadres through videos sent during efflurage and endorphin massage sessions on pregnant women. The efflurage and endorphin massage training improved the knowledge and skills of the pregnant women's companions and effectively reduced pain levels. It is hoped that future community service providers can continue the training in other areas with regular evaluations and integrate the efflurage and endorphin massage training program into maternal health services for broader and more sustainable benefits

Abstract

Maternal and child health (MCH) services require effective communication, information, and education (CIE) media supported by a structured recording system. The Maternal and Child Health Book (MCH Book) has been established by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia as the sole official tool for documenting MCH services nationwide. However, its utilization remains suboptimal, mainly due to the limited knowledge and skills of posyandu cadres. This community service program was conducted in the working area of Syamtalira Bayu Primary Health Center with the objective of enhancing cadres’ knowledge and skills in using and documenting the MCH Book. The intervention included socialization, pre-test, education and training sessions, group discussions, post-test, and mentoring. Evaluation results showed a considerable improvement in cadres’ understanding and ability to use the MCH Book effectively. Cadres actively participated in all activities and demonstrated the application of acquired knowledge in posyandu services. This program highlights the essential role of cadres in promoting the utilization of the MCH Book among pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and mothers with infants and toddlers. Strengthening cadres’ capacity contributes to improved monitoring of maternal health as well as children’s growth and development at the community level

Abstract

Stunting is a growth and development disorder in children due to chronic malnutrition and repeated infections, characterized by a length or height below the standard. Based on an initial survey conducted in Petajen village, there were 55 toddlers experiencing nutritional problems of wasting and stunting. Lack of knowledge regarding diverse food consumption is one indicator of the cause of nutritional problems in toddlers in Petajen village. The potential of local resources such as catfish and tempeh is quite abundant, but has not been utilized optimally to increase the added value of food products. The purpose of this activity is to provide nutritious food education to PKK mothers through counseling and the formation of independent nutritious food cadres. The method used in this community service is training and mentoring in making catfish and tempeh biscuits. The result of this activity is biscuits made from catfish and tempeh which are expected to be one of the nutritious food choices to overcome nutritional problems and encourage community self-reliance for initial small-scale production. Based on the results of the implementation of Community-Based Empowerment, the characteristics of respondents are known that of the 11 respondents, the majority are in late adulthood (45.4%), some respondents have a high school education (54.5%). There was a very significant increase in knowledge after the training was given. Before the training, the average correct answer of participants was only 33.3%. After the training, the average correct answer increased to 87.5%, which reflects a 54.2% increase in knowledge. The formation of a Household-Based Small Business Group, training participants formed a small group that agreed to continue the production of patin fish biscuits and tempeh as a local superior product. This group began to design simple marketing strategies, such as sales in the surrounding environment, integrated health posts (posyandu), and village activities
