Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the differences in the rate of photosynthesis in plants growing in light and dark environments, focusing on corn (Zea mays) and mung bean (Vigna radiata). Photosynthesis is an essential process that allows plants to generate energy from sunlight, with light being a key factor that determines the efficiency of this process. In this study, the plants were grown in two different conditions: a light environment with direct sunlight exposure and a dark environment with no light exposure. Observations were made over a period of one month to record the morphological and physiological differences in the plants. The results showed that plants growing in the light environment had a higher rate of photosynthesis, indicated by fresh green leaves due to optimal chlorophyll formation.

Abstract

The current reliance on chemical fertilizers has caused many problems in agricultural practices, such as the decline in soil quality and crop resistance to environmental stress. Farmers are encouraged to use chemical fertilizers, due to the lack of efficiency of nutrient absorption in plants which results in a lack of productivity of agricultural products. This research aims to review in depth the role of Mycorrhizal fungi in increasing the efficiency of nutrient uptake by plants. The research method used is the literature review method to explore more deeply the role of mycorrhizal fungi in increasing the efficiency of plant nutrient uptake. The results stated that mycorrhizal fungi have great potential as microorganism partners in increasing plant nutrient uptake. With its ability to expand the root absorption area, and enhance plant growth, improve soil structure and reduce pollution, mycorrhiza can contribute significantly to agricultural sustainability.

Abstract

Agriculture is a strategic sector that has the ability to overcome world problems, such as natural climate transition and land degradation. The use of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR), such as Bacillus and Pseudomonas, is one promising solution. These bacteria play a role in increasing nutrient uptake, controlling pathogens, and stimulating the development of cultivated products. Based on the results of previous research, it is explained that Bacillus spp. are able to produce bioactive metabolites that increase plant tolerance to stress, while Pseudomonas spp. play a role in increasing systemic plant immunity. The combination of the two is proven to have a synergistic effect, increasing plant productivity by up to 25%, and improving rhizosphere health. However, challenges such as lack of technology adoption and supportive policies still hinder the widespread implementation of PGPR. This research highlights the great potential of Bacillus and Pseudomonas as biological agents in supporting sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

The increasing global demand for food amidst increasingly extreme climate change poses significant challenges to the agricultural sector, particularly in arid lands vulnerable to drought.  Unsustainable water use and improper irrigation practices can negatively impact the physical and chemical properties of soil, threatening agricultural productivity and sustainability. This study aims to analyze the influence of various irrigation practices on the physical and chemical properties of soil in dryland agricultural areas. The research methodology includes measuring physical soil properties such as texture, structure, and water holding capacity, as well as chemical soil analysis to determine salinity levels and nutrient availability. This research investigates the impact of irrigation water use on the physical and chemical properties of agricultural land in Village Afia, District Nort Nias, using a qualitative approach. Data was collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with farmers, and analysis of documents related to irrigation practices. The research results indicate a correlation between irrigation patterns and soil conditions. Excessive irrigation water use is associated with increased soil salinity and decreased soil structure, while well-managed irrigation contributes to improved soil fertility. This study highlights the importance of sustainable irrigation management to maintain soil quality and agricultural productivity.

Abstract

This research compares soil infiltration capacity on organically and conventionally managed land to determine the impact of management on soil quality and sustainability. Measurements were carried out using a double ring infiltrometer at two different locations with similar soil characteristics. The results showed that organic soil had a significantly higher infiltration capacity compared to conventional soil. This is related to the higher organic matter content and better soil structure on organic land. Higher infiltration capacity supports better soil water balance, reduces the risk of erosion, and increases resilience to climate change, making organic management a more sustainable option in agricultural practices. It is hoped that these findings can support the development of agricultural policies that are oriented towards environmental sustainability.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effect of variations in humus content on water retention and nutrient availability (N, P and K) in the soil. This research used a laboratory experimental design with humus content treatments of 0%, 2%, 5%, and 10%. The results showed that increasing humus levels significantly increased the water retention capacity and availability of soil nutrients. At a humus content of 10%, soil has the highest capacity to hold water and provide essential nutrients for plants. This shows that humus plays an important role in supporting the balance between water retention and nutrient release, which is very important for agricultural productivity. In conclusion, increasing humus levels through organic matter or green manure can improve soil quality and support sustainable agriculture, especially on land with low humus levels.

Abstract

Soil compaction is an important factor that affects root growth and crop productivity, especially in sustainable farming systems. This study aims to examine the relationship between soil compaction levels and corn root growth. Soil compaction treatments were applied at three levels: no compaction (control), moderate compaction, and high compaction. Parameters measured included root length, root volume, and root dry weight. The results showed that increasing soil compaction significantly reduced root growth, with high compaction resulting in shorter roots, smaller volume, and lower dry weight. In conclusion, high soil compaction limits root growth and affects the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of soil management practices that maintain porosity to support sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the relationship between soil structure and plant biomass production. Soil structure is an important factor that influences plant growth through its influence on aeration, drainage and nutrient availability. In this research, soil physical parameters were measured, such as density, porosity and aggregate size, as well as observations of plant biomass production in various types of soil. The analysis results show that soil with good structure, characterized by high porosity and low density, tends to produce higher biomass. Additionally, a significant positive relationship was found between soil aggregate size and the volume of biomass produced. These findings emphasize the importance of managing soil structure to increase crop productivity, as well as providing insights for sustainable agricultural practices. It is hoped that this research can become a reference for farmers and land managers in efforts to increase agricultural yields through improving soil structure.

Abstract

Hydroponic farming, as a modern agricultural method, has shown great potential in increasing the efficiency of food production on limited land. Even though hydroponics does not directly use soil, understanding the physical properties of soil remains relevant in the context of developing efficient and sustainable growing media. This research aims to explore the physical properties of soil—such as texture, porosity, and density—and how these properties can be adapted to increase plant yields in hydroponic systems. In addition, this research identifies the challenges faced in implementing hydroponics, including limited knowledge about the interactions between growing media and plants, as well as economic and environmental aspects that need to be considered. Thus, it is hoped that this study will provide valuable insights for the development of more effective and sustainable hydroponic farming practices.

Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the groundwater absorption capacity of post-flood land in lowland areas. Through quantitative and qualitative approaches, this research analyzes soil physical characteristics, infiltration rates, and the impact of flooding on land productivity. Data collection was carried out at five locations that had been identified as experiencing flooding, by measuring soil texture, density and infiltration tests using a ring infiltrometer. The research results show that variations in soil texture have a significant effect on water absorption capacity, where sandy soil has a higher infiltration rate than denser soil. In addition, interviews with farmers revealed that flooding had a negative impact on land productivity, with many farmers experiencing difficulties in post-flood recovery. Effective recovery strategies are needed to increase groundwater absorption capacity and support agricultural sustainability in flood-affected areas.
