Abstract

Mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbances have become increasingly prevalent in Indian communities, especially among youth in semi-urban settings. While physical exercise is known to offer psychological benefits, its potential as a community-driven mental health intervention remains underutilized. This study explores the impact of structured sports programs in promoting psychological well-being through community empowerment using an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The intervention was implemented in a semi-urban region of Telangana, India, involving 120 participants and 30 trained youth facilitators. Community assets were mapped and mobilized to develop weekly sports sessions combined with group reflection activities. Mixed methods were used to evaluate outcomes: self-reported surveys on stress, sleep, and mood; qualitative reflection logs and participatory observation. The structure was rooted in ABCD principles to ensure sustainability and local ownership. Quantitative findings showed a 53% reduction in daily stress and a 44% improvement in sleep quality among participants. A substantial increase in group participation, emotional openness, and community involvement was also observed. Trained youth facilitators reported improved self-confidence and took active leadership roles in organizing sessions. The intervention led to the formation of a local taskforce, ensuring program continuity beyond institutional support. The program successfully reframed sports as a culturally appropriate tool for emotional expression and mental health awareness. It also fostered a cultural shift in how mental health is discussed within families and peer groups. Although self-reported data and short-term tracking limited generalizability, the results highlight the promise of scalable, community-owned, sports-based mental health strategies.

Abstract

This study explores how reading corners can increase students’ interest in reading and improve literacy skills at SD Negeri Cilondong, located in Cihanyawar Village, Sukabumi Regency. The reading corners were created as a solution to the lack of reading materials and poor reading environments often found in rural schools. Using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the study involved 80 students from grades 1 to 6, along with teachers and school staff, in a process of planning, implementing, and evaluating the reading corner activities. Data were collected through questionnaires, reading logs, and group discussions. The reading corners were filled with storybooks, comics, science books, picture books, and folk tales. After several months, the results showed clear improvements: 68.8% of students enjoyed reading more, 75.1% actively used the reading corners, and over 70% showed better reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Most students visited the corners regularly and many borrowed books to read at home. This study shows that a simple, low-cost reading corner, developed with community involvement, can significantly help improve reading habits and literacy in rural elementary schools.

Abstract

Premarital guidance plays a vital role in preparing prospective brides and grooms for marriage by enhancing their religious and psychological readiness. Integrating Service Learning into this guidance program offers an experiential and participatory approach that may improve the effectiveness of preparation. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a Service Learning framework, involving five pairs of prospective couples and one religious counselor at the Religious Affairs Office in Percut Sei Tuan. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews, focusing on the implementation process and its impact on couples’ readiness. Findings indicate that Service Learning-based premarital guidance significantly improves couples’ understanding of Islamic marriage principles and strengthens their emotional maturity and coping skills. Interactive activities and reflections promoted deeper internalization of religious values and enhanced psychological preparedness for marital challenges. The participatory nature of Service Learning fosters moral commitment and emotional resilience essential for harmonious family life. Despite challenges such as limited time and participant variability, this approach effectively combines spiritual and psychological preparation, contributing to the development of stable and fulfilling marriages.

Abstract

This community-based development initiative focused on empowering local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) in Cihanyawar Village through collaborative strategies targeting three key areas namely packaging improvement, marketing enhancement, and halal certification facilitation. Employing a community-based research (CBR) framework, the program engaged 25 UMKM units spanning food processing, handicrafts, and agricultural products over a six-month intervention period. The initiative involved participatory training sessions, hands-on technical assistance, and sustained mentoring designed and implemented in collaboration with local stakeholders. Mixed-methods evaluation, including structured surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations, was conducted to assess outcomes before and after the intervention. Findings indicate substantial progress across all focus areas. Average packaging quality scores improved from 1.8 to 4.1 (127.8% increase), social media adoption reached 84%, and marketing channel diversity expanded by 240%. Halal certification efforts led to a 52% success rate among participating businesses. These outcomes translated into meaningful economic impact, with average monthly revenue rising by 56.6% and customer reach growing by 111.9%. Statistical analysis confirmed the program’s effectiveness (p < 0.001) across key performance indicators. The collaborative and integrated nature of the intervention generated synergistic effects, demonstrating the value of localized, community-based empowerment approaches in strengthening rural UMKM resilience and competitiveness.

Abstract

This community service initiative was designed to improve rice farmers’ livelihoods through a participatory support program involving seed distribution and collaborative agricultural assistance with the Regional Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) in Cihanyawar Village. The program integrated the strengths of academic institutions and local agricultural agencies to deliver targeted support aimed at increasing productivity and income. Using a participatory action research approach, the six-month program engaged 50 farmers through four key phases: preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Three superior rice varieties IR64, Ciherang, and Inpari-32, were distributed, accompanied by intensive training in modern cultivation techniques, integrated pest management, and sustainable farming practices. The initiative led to a 61.9% increase in rice yield, from 4.2 to 6.8 tons per hectare, with Inpari-32 performing the highest at 7.2 tons per hectare. Economically, farmers’ gross income rose by 55.3%, from IDR 8.5 million to IDR 13.2 million per hectare per season, with a benefit-cost ratio of 6.27. Knowledge transfer was also effective, as farmers’ mastery of modern practices improved from 23% to 87%. Notably, 78% of participating farmers expressed commitment to continue the improved practices. The success of this collaborative model underscores the potential of participatory and institutional synergy in promoting sustainable improvements in farmers’ livelihoods. This model can serve as a practical reference for future agricultural development programs in similar rural contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates how the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach can be employed to enhance learning motivation in a tahfidz program at TPA Al-Hikmah Centre Buluh Kasok, a rural-based Qur’anic education center in Indonesia. The study adopts a qualitative case study design involving participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with tahfidz instructors, students, and parents, as well as document analysis. The research focuses on identifying community assets and examining their influence on students’ motivation to memorize the Qur’an. Data were analyzed using thematic coding within the framework of ABCD and motivational learning theories. Findings reveal that the ABCD approach significantly supports Qur’anic learning motivation through three pathways: (1) mobilization of local social and spiritual assets, including parental involvement and religious role models; (2) creation of a collaborative peer-based learning atmosphere; and (3) cultural and emotional reinforcement through communal rituals and recognition. Students who were embedded in these asset-driven learning environments demonstrated higher persistence, stronger memorization consistency, and more positive emotional engagement. These findings confirm that learning motivation in tahfidz education is influenced not merely by curriculum design or teacher-centered instruction but by the activation of communal and cultural capital. The study supports existing theories of intrinsic motivation and the social nature of learning, while also contributing to the limited literature on ABCD in Islamic educational contexts. Future research should expand this inquiry through longitudinal and comparative studies across diverse educational settings to better understand how community-driven strategies can be institutionalized in Qur’anic pedagogy.
