Abstract

Education has been developed in the western part as well as in the eastern part of the world, although each might have brought forth quite different methods and values. Education also has evolved in Indonesia since long before the contemporary systems. Sewaka Darma, an ancient Sundanese text, contains a particular model of education by way of teaching the wisdom of life. This text inspires further discussion on how education has been understood long time ago in its particular Sundanese context. Sewaka Darma is a kind of textbook for teaching that contains discourses between a teacher and his or her student. The teacher presents the teachings in a form of kawih (advice). By implementing a narrative model, the teacher conveys philosophy of life, the way of perfection, and moksha. The core of these teachings could be summarized: (a) that life is about suffering, being mortal, and a temporary condition, and (b) that life moves towards the perfection in moksha. On the level of practical everydayness, in order to gain perfection human strives to be a knowing and integral person. Sewaka Darma shows particular educational elements, that is, (a) virtue teachings for the sake of finding the basis of life through a spiritual outlook and (b) virtue advices that insinuate a learning methodology: on the wholeness and integrity of the self, on the character education by way of nyantrik (to be a follower in order to learn) method, on teachers as the role-model, and on the educational community.

Abstract

Simone de Beauvoir and Emmanuel Levinas are two of the leading philosophers who gave rise to the idea of transcendence. While for Beauvoir transcendence is a fully human effort (particularly among women) to come out of the shackles of patriarchal culture, for Levinas transcendence extends to a broader scope, that is, to humanism as well as to the relationships among people. Beauvoir would see transcendence as women’s efforts to break out of the structures of patriarchy through the three strategies it offers, viz., that women must work, engage in intellectual activities, and become perpetrators of action for the sake of social transformation. As for Levinas, transcendence is closely associated with human face. The face is not merely an object of intentional consciousness, but representing the significance of human transcendence. Through the face, one might recognise the presence of others. On the other hand, it shows the face of infinite dimensions in such a way that it cannot be subdued by the attempts of human consciousness willing to master it.

Abstract

Phenomenology of Perception is one of the main philosophical works of a France phenomenological philosopher, Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In this book, Merleau-Ponty elaborates his reflection on the nature of the body based on the perception of the world. In “Sense Experience,” which is part of Phenomenology of Perception, explains the bodily experience and its relation to human’s mode of being in the world. This part is important to look upon, for it serves as the basis for Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological thought on perception. In “Sense Experience”, while affirming his critique on empiricism and intellectualism, Merleau-Ponty also reflects the meaning of sense experience, the unity of the sense, the analytical attitude, the nature of the body, and the ambiguity of sense experience itself. Two key ideas surface from “Sense Experience,” that is, sense experience with and through the body, and bodily experience with and through the world. One might speak of the world, yet one is part of it. It is the body that allows such ambiguity.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Penghargaan atas kebebasan berbicara haruslah memungkinkan individu melawan arus umum.

Abstract

This article investigates the deeper foundation for the rapidly emerging and widespread consciousness in the business world on tbe nature and demand of the corporate social responsibility. Ethical norms and values should no longer be considered as externalistics, annoying additional costs and burdens to business interprices, but the very inner motivation for doing business at all, namely, to bring betterment to the world-wide human condition. That enduring noble al could only be accomplished if there is a comprehensive understanding on the kind of rationality that should permeate the so-called market society. In addition to the instrumental rationality that presently makes the market fluorish, we should also integrate what Max Weber called affective rationality and normative rationality.

Abstract

Crisis of identity and the search for identity is a typical phenomenon of modern culture. Sundanese culture, one of many other Indonesian cultural tribes, is not an exception. Referring to the idea offered by Pierre Buhler, the article will argue that crisis is needed, because it exhilarates the search for identity for the sake of survival vis a vis the challenges of modernity. In the process, the society is not supposed to attach itself solely to its objective-material references, because if so, the search for identiy will come to a dead end, Sundanese identity will be closed. Whereas, identity is a dynamic process, and as such it should be open to any critical evaluation, that enables it to develop. In order to develop, objective references that constitute the identity of Sunda (or that of any other Indonesian tribal culture), which in this modern age are increasingly falling off, should be countered by subjective-spiritual references. But the subjective search, in turn, should be warranted so that it may not fall into pure subjectivism, which may hamper the identity development. Therefore, identity should be confronted to objectivity. This would mean taking into consideration, with confidence and belief, what the other people will say about Sunda; putting this belief into discourse which can be evaluated with critical mind, and evaluating its practical importance in the implementation of Sundanese ethical virtues.

Abstract

The message about Jesus the Christ is always contextual in nature. The message serves as the answer to particular quest, including the quest for basic orientation of life. It should be noted, however, that contextualization is also fragmentation which presupposes certain kind of functionalism.
