Abstract

This study considers that management practices have the ability to turn dissatisfied customers to loyal customers through effective service recovery encounter. For this purpose, this study investigates the potential impact of selected management practices on service recovery performance and its outcomes of front line officers by adapting Boshoff and Allen, (2000) research model. Using Boshoff and Allen, 2000 instrument, 147 front line officers who involve with electronic government (E-Gov) were analyzed about their perceptions about public sector organisation management practices. Quantitative approach using multivariate data analysis such as descriptive analysis, reliability analysis and multiple regressions through SPSS version 24.00 were used to estimate the predictors and its consequences of service recovery performance in the public sector organization (PSO) in Jordan. Results shows that ‘affective organizational commitment’ exert a strong positive relationship compared with customer service training, empowerment and supervisor support. The variable role ambiguity shows a weak non-significant relationship as opposed to the proposed effect. Results also suggest that successful service recovery performance leads to increased job satisfaction and decreased turnover intentions. This study could be generalized as a main guideline for public sector organization in Jordan. Moreover, the responses were collected from same participants asking about their performance, which may result in bias of common variance. Furthermore, this study makes contribution both academically and practically. Practically, the findings indicate the organizational behavior variables that the manager has to take care to achieve front line service recovery excellence. Academically, this study is unique as it focuses on public sector organisation (PSO) facing sudden completion due to deregulation as a case in point.

Abstract

Perhaps one most important signifier of progress in this age is knowledge creation. Today, knowledge has become the basic substance and fabric of the whole dynamics of the society. Knowledge sector has given birth to what we now know as knowledge-based economy, knowledge-based society, knowledge-based policymaking and politics, and even knowledge-based culture.  However, scholarly debate on knowledge creation seems to have somehow reached saturation point. ‘Triple-helix’ (Etzkowitz Leydesdorff, 2000) was coined, after the ‘New Production of  Knowledge’ (Gibbons, 1994), in an effort to understand the dynamics of the interaction among different actors –government, universities, and business—in fostering innovation, technological progress, and knowledge transfer (Etzkowitz Leydesdorff, 2000:118). Quickly becoming a ‘norm’ in innovation policy (after Lundvall, Borras, 2005) many started to follow with quadruple, quintuple, sextuple, and more, helices. Yet, at the conceptual level, there is nothing new after ‘triple helix’: that knowledge has never been created and produced monolithically, let alone in a centralised manner. Knowledge production is always multidimensional, distributed, and involves multi-actors. In many economies, particularly the emerging ones like Indonesia, knowledge is perceived to be significantly helping inform policy and development. But what are actually the implications of this to policymaking processes? To what extent do knowledge inform policy and how? This presentation attempts to provide some insights on the matter by focusing on the way in which knowledge has been advanced to inform development policy.

Abstract

E-learning is expected to play a greater role in accommodating the needs of the adult learners to participate in the learning programs. Since most distance learners are adults, it is critical for educators to understand several aspects of adults such as how adults learn and their preferences in studying. These understanding could help educators to plan a more effective learning programs and to provide a better support services to help adult learners. This paper will attempt to highlight the preference of adult learners between the synchronous or  asynchronous e-learning instruction. The discussion is based on a study conducted on adult learners who are studying at  the School of Distance Education (SDE), Universiti Sains Malaysia in Malaysia. The synchronous instructions are the live video conferencing and video streaming which are held  at certain scheduled time to augment the printing learning materials. The asynchronous e-learning instructions are in the form of recorded video conference and reading materials posted in the learning portal that are accessible to students at anytime and anywhere.  Factors related to the usage of these e-learning instructions will be identified and discussed. Learners’ problems or avoidance in utilizing the e-learning instruction will also be noted. Keywords: E-learning, adult learners, synchronous instruction, asynchronous instruction
