Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of physical fitness program on the quality of life of the female inmates in Iligan City amidst COVID- 19 pandemic. The study used a quasi-experimental research design. Sixty-eight female inmates were assigned in two groups (controlled and experimental) of 34 participants each group based on non-random criteria. The duration of the physical fitness program for the experimental group was 12 weeks. Control group individuals did not participate in the physical fitness program. A set of questionnaires, which included sections of the respondents’ profile, and a short version of Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), was administered twice to both groups before and after the physical fitness program. The findings of this study revealed that the physical fitness program, regardless of the frequency, intensity, type, and time of participation was significantly associated to the quality of life in terms of general health (P= 0.004), body pain (P= 0.010), vitality (0.023), and emotional state (P= 0.002) of the female inmates (experimental group). Although further study is necessary (e.g., longer fitness program), the present study showed that a 12-week physical fitness program could improve the quality of life of the female inmates. Thus, the researcher recommends that the BJMP continue with the fitness program and further studies be conducted that would assess and validate the effects of fitness program within jail setting.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges experienced encountered among basketball players in tournament sports participation. The study employed a descriptive-exploratory case study approach. The researcher used semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observation to collect data from six basketball players who met the researcher's criteria. The finding’s revealed that the participants were challenged during tournament sports participation. The participants pointed out that during sports tournament participation, the participants revealed that some of their struggles were physical restraints, health conditions, such as injuries, not enough resting time, in-game pressure, and lack of communication. Results revealed that the presence of pressure, miscommunication of the team, and health conditions are their highly faced struggles during the game. The findings have proven that the challenges experienced by athletes undeniably affect their performance, which is also influenced by how they perceive situations in a competitive sports environment. This study highlights the importance of addressing both physical and mental health concerns to enhance player performance and team success in competitive sports environments.

Abstract

Lifestyle physical activity in adolescence improve the level of physical activity and movement that young individuals engage in as part of their daily routines and activities outside of structured exercise or organized sports. It encompasses the everyday activities that adolescents do, such as walking, biking, playing. Physical fitness is essential for all ages, but it is significant for adolescence and children. A fit body can lead to a healthy mind and body, so it is important to make lifestyle physical activity a regular part of your life. Adolescence who are physically fit are less likely to suffer from obesity or other chronic health conditions, and they are also more likely to have better mental health. Physically active adolescence has been shown to have better academic performance and social skills. By encouraging your adolescence to be physically active, you set them up for a healthy and happy life, as lifestyle physical activity helps to improve focus and concentration. Being physically fit and well-being can also boost self-esteem and confidence, adolescence learn to appreciate their bodies and what they can do. In addition, PA changes over several transitional periods, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. In many settings, a low level of PA among children occurs as a result of adults’ poor understanding of biological and environmental changes. By understanding the timing and period of the decline or increase in PA, the school, family, and home community can create more opportunities to incorporate PA into a child’s daily life. The Thai government and policy makers can also use the results of this study as evidence in refining their strategies and designing appropriate interventions to improve PA of Thai adolescence people and prevent or delay the onset of non-communicable diseases (NCD) of the population in the long run.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the role of motivation in the sports participation of student-athletes in Iligan City, Philippines. The Motivation for Sports Measure–Revised (MSM-R), adapted from the Motivation for Physical Activity Measure-Revised developed by Ryan et al. (1997), was utilized to assess motivation, while the Sports Participation Model Questionnaire (SPMQ) developed by Aicenena (2012) was employed to evaluate athletes' sports involvement. A total of 1015 college student-athletes from various Colleges and Universities in Iligan City participated by completing a series of questionnaires pertaining to motivation and sports participation. Analysis of the motivation subscales revealed that appearance, competence, and social interaction exhibited significant associations with sports participation among the student-athletes. Conversely, interest/enjoyment and fitness did not demonstrate a significant relationship with sports participation. These findings suggest that appearance, competence, and social interactions are the primary drivers motivating student-athletes to engage in sports activities. Hence, the findings of this study indicate that student-athletes participate in sports not primarily out of interest, enjoyment, or fitness concerns, but rather to enhance their physical attractiveness and social interactions. This underscores the importance of understanding motivational factors influencing sports participation and their implications for promoting and sustaining engagement among student-athletes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of body mass index to the level of physical fitness of junior high school students in Medan City in 2023. This study used descriptive analytic method. The sample amounted to 23 people, obtained by purposive sample. To determine the correlation of body mass index to the level of physical fitness is sought using the product moment formula. This research uses body mass index test instruments and physical fitness tests carried out to find out data on research variables, namely body mass index data and student physical fitness tests. From the results of statistical analysis, the correlation coefficient between body mass index and physical fitness is rcount = 0.55. To find out how much the contribution of body mass index to the level of physical fitness is calculated with R = (0.55)2 x 100% = 30.25%. The contribution is 30.25%. Thus the hypothesis that states there is a contribution of body mass index to the level of physical fitness of junior high school students in Medan City in 2023 can be accepted in this study. This research opens insights into knowledge for teachers, especially physical education teachers so that this information can be applied in schools.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the student’s perception on the appropriateness of virtual reality headset as an aid in learning and performing dance. A descriptive-correlational type of research was employed. Sixty Physical Education students were chosen as respondents of the study. They were asked to wear a 3D Virtual Reality Box for an average of one minute. Inside it was a mobile phone with a dance video. A self-made questionnaire was then given for them to response. It is a likert scale that contains a series of statements on the appropriateness of the tool, inviting the respondents to respond to each based on how strongly they feel on each statement. The results shows that age, familiarity on the use of VR and the rate on the appropriateness of VR use is significantly correlated with the perception on the use of virtual reality on dancing performance. This implies that the more familiar and aware the respondents are with VR, the more they perceived that this is an appropriate tool in performing dance better. Furthermore, those who believe that virtual reality headset is appropriate as a learning tool in dancing also has a higher perception on the efficacy of VR headset on students’ dancing performance. This result suggests that teachers in physical education may consider using the virtual reality headset as a tool in teaching dance.
