Abstract

Background and aim. Martial arts require the integration of physical abilities and psychological readiness, particularly in challenging competitive situations. One psychological strategy widely used by athletes is positive self-talk, which plays a role in maintaining focus, self-confidence, and emotional regulation during competition. Although the benefits of self-talk have been widely discussed, research that specifically explores its role among winning martial arts athletes remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effects of positive self-talk on psychological aspects that support the performance of winning martial arts athletes.Methods. This study employed a mixed-methods design. The research population consisted of collegiate-level arnis, karate, and taekwondo athletes who were actively competing at several public colleges and universities in the Philippines. The quantitative sample included 50 athletes selected using purposive sampling. Quantitative data were collected using a 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire with five response points that had been tested for feasibility and reliability. The qualitative phase involved seven national- or international-level winning athletes through semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analysis was conducted using a one-sample t-test with a test value of 3, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically.Results. The quantitative results showed that all psychological variables had mean scores that were significantly higher than the midpoint of the Likert scale (p < 0.001). Focus during competition obtained the highest score (M = 4.52, SD = 0.41), followed by self-confidence (M = 4.47, SD = 0.36), performance under pressure (M = 4.38, SD = 0.48), and anxiety reduction (M = 4.20, SD = 0.55). The qualitative findings revealed that positive self-talk helped athletes maintain mental clarity, strengthen self-belief, manage emotions, and sustain performance in high-pressure situations.Conclusions. This study demonstrates that positive self-talk functions as an important psychological regulation mechanism for winning martial arts athletes. These findings imply that coaches and sport practitioners should systematically integrate positive self-talk training into mental preparation programs to support athletes’ performance consistency in competition.

Abstract

Studi Purpose This study discusses the low kick speed in male athletes of the Patbanbu pencak silat school in carrying out the sickle kick which results in the kick being successfully avoided, captured, resulting in falls and landslide points for the opponent. The factor that causes the weakness  of the ability of the sickle kick, is the speed of the leg muscles. A form of exercise that can increase the speed of leg muscles is resistance band training. Method This research is a type of pseudo-experimental research. The study population was  11 pencak silat college  athletes. Sampling was done using purposive sampling techniques  with a sample of 7 male athletes. The data analysis technique used the T test. This study was conducted 16 times. The exercises are given in the form of resistance band exercises. The hypothesis proposed in this study is that there is a significant influence of exercise on the speed of the sickle kick. Results of the analysis were that there was a significant influence on  resistance band training  on the increase in the speed of  the crescent  kick of Patbanbu pencak silat school athletes in Padang City, obtained a tcount value (5.620) > ttable (2.015) at a significant level of α = 0.05. Therefore, Conclusion it can be concluded that Resistance Band  training can provide significant results on sickle speed in male athletes of the Patbanbu pencak silat college, North Padang District, Padang City.

Abstract

Studi Purpose- Traditional martial arts, mostly originating from East Asia, are now practiced in many countries around the world, and therefore on a global scale. Method. Research methodology in martial arts and according to the General Theory of Fighting Arts, in matters of cultural analysis it is most appropriate to adopt a qualitative methodology. Result and Discussion. If a young, 30-year-old instructor boasts of having the rank of 10th dan, it is extremely strange and against tradition. These highest, non-technical degrees are awarded for merits, i.e. teaching, work for popularization, publications, ethical attitude, etc. They can rarely be achieved before the age of 60. The cases of juvenile holders of the highest degrees result from the extreme commercialization of the martial arts market. Conclusion. The novelty of research here is the idea of assessing the presence of various martial arts in the general cultural heritage of humanity according to the level of institutionalization and dissemination on a global scale. The matter probably requires further research.
