Abstract

Background and aim. Match analysis has been widely used to examine performance characteristics and activity demands in combat sports. However, empirical evidence focusing on Silat Tempur, particularly among youth athletes, remains limited. This study aimed to analyse and compare the activity profile during action time between winners and losers in national Silat Tempur competitions involving young male athletes.Methods.  Seven publicly available video recordings of official national Silat Tempur matches from different weight categories were analysed using a validated notational analysis system. Each match was observed twice with a 48-hour interval. Intra-observer reliability demonstrated excellent agreement for total actions and outcome variables (ICC ≥ 0.95). A matched-samples t-test was used to compare activity profiles between winners and losers.Results.  The results showed that hit target (HT) outcomes accounted for the highest proportion of actions (50.6%), followed by hit elsewhere (HE) (32.5%) and miss opponent (MO) (16.9%). Winners performed a greater number of total actions (79 actions, 51%) compared to losers (57 actions, 41%). In addition, winners recorded a substantially higher proportion of hit target outcomes (48 actions, 69%) than losers (21 actions, 31%). These findings indicate that hit target outcomes were the primary determinant of match success, as they directly contributed to scoring in Silat Tempur. Overall, winners demonstrated a higher frequency of effective actions, accounting for 79 of the 136 total actions recorded during the matches.Conclusions.      Performance differences in youth Silat Tempur competitions are primarily determined by the effectiveness of actions rather than the total volume of actions performed. These findings provide empirical evidence on the activity profile of youth Silat Tempur and offer practical insights for training design that emphasises scoring effectiveness and balanced offensive–defensive strategies.

Abstract

Background and aim. Single kick skill is one of the fundamental techniques in pencak silat that requires optimal physical condition and motor ability. Aerobic endurance supports athletes in maintaining performance during matches, while movement coordination plays a crucial role in executing accurate and effective kicking techniques. This study aimed to determine the relationship between aerobic endurance and movement coordination with single kick skills in young Indonesian martial arts (SMI) athletes in Pariaman City.Methods.  This research employed a correlational design. The population consisted of 20 SMI athletes (17 males and 3 females) in Pariaman City. The sample was determined using purposive sampling, involving 17 male athletes. Aerobic endurance was measured using the bleep test, movement coordination was assessed using the soccer wall volley test, and single kick skills were evaluated through a performance test assessed by judges. Data were analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation with a significance level of α = 0.05.Results.  The findings revealed: (1) a significant relationship between aerobic endurance and single kick skills (t_count = 2.29 > t_table = 1.75); (2) a significant relationship between movement coordination and single kick skills (t_count = 2.48 > t_table = 1.75); and (3) a significant simultaneous relationship between aerobic endurance and movement coordination with single kick skills (F_count = 8.23 > F_table = 3.74).Conclusions.        Aerobic endurance and movement coordination are significantly related to single kick skills, both partially and simultaneously. Improving these physical and motor components may contribute to better single kick performance in pencak silat athletes.

Abstract

Background and aim. There are two types of sparring in silat: Silat olahraga and Silat tempur. Silat tempur is a combative sport focused on children, particularly beginners aged 7 to 13. The competition was introduced to prepare young athletes for sparring in Silat olahraga and to improve combative techniques among young silat exponents. The arena, which resembles a fencing platform, facilitates the execution of silat techniques during competition. This study aims to describe the development and implementation of Silat tempur as a preparatory competition for young athletes.Methods.  This study employed a secondary data analysis approach using data obtained from the Pertubuhan Seni Gayung Fatani Malaysia website and official competition records. The data focused on the 2019 Silat tempur league, which consisted of four competition series. Results The findings show that the Silat tempur competition has developed into a structured league involving approximately 200 silat exponents from ten active silat clubs in Malaysia. It represents the first silat league established globally and demonstrates a systematic approach to developing young athletes’ combat skills.Conclusions.        Silat tempur serves as an effective platform for enhancing fundamental combat skills and preparing young exponents for higher-level competitions in Silat olahraga. Its structured format contributes to athlete development and promotes the preservation and global recognition of Malay martial arts

Abstract

Background and aim. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of gender differences among Muay Thai (MT) athletes, covering aspects such as definition, injury risk, gender issues, gender recognition, fitness components, motivation factors, agility and power performance, instrumentation, training, and previous research. It also compares agility and power performance between male and female athletes to examine their effectiveness.Methods.  This study employs a literature review approach by analyzing and synthesizing previous studies related to Muay Thai athletes, with a focus on gender perspectives and performance components.Results.  The findings indicate that agility enables rapid directional changes without compromising balance and precision, while power, defined as the combination of speed and force, is positively correlated with agility performance. Gender dynamics in Muay Thai highlight ongoing debates regarding opportunities for female athletes and the influence of physiological differences. In addition, the literature reveals a scarcity of research on Muay Thai in Malaysia, particularly in terms of fitness and body conditioning.Conclusions. This study provides important insights for stakeholders in promoting Muay Thai and guiding athlete development. It also contributes to a broader understanding of gender perspectives in Muay Thai, supporting its growth and future development.
