Abstract

Antioxidants are defined as inhibitors that work to inhibit oxidation by reacting with reactive free radicals to form stable unreactive free radicals. Antioxidants are substances that can delay, slow down and prevent the oxidation process or neutralize free radicals. Plantain peel contains several metabolite compounds that have the potential to have antioxidant activity such as saponins, polyphenols and tannins, flavonoids and terpenoids. Banana peel extract has high antioxidant activity. The methanol extract of banana peels was higher in total flavonoids and phenolics compared to the n-hexane extract of banana peels. The aim of this research was to test the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of plantain peel using the FRAP (Ferrc Reduxing Antioxidant Power) method. The extraction method for plantain peel uses the maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. The ethanol extract of plantain peel was then added with several FRAP reagents then measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 720 nm with quercetin as a comparison and the results of the quercetin test obtained a linearity equation y = 0.0207x + 0.0114 with a correlation coefficient value of r = 0.9904. The results showed that the ethanol extract of plantain peel had antioxidant activity of 26.5828 mgQE/g extract.

Abstract

Health problems that often occur in Indonesia are problems related to diseases caused by free radicals. The presence of free radicals can trigger damage to cells and can disrupt the body's immune system. The immune system can be enhanced or suppressed, one way is by administering immunomodulators. Several natural compounds have the ability to increase immune system activity, including flavonoids, curcumin, limonoids, vitamin C, vitamin E and catechins. Phenolic components such as flavonoids and polyphenols can improve the immune system by increasing Interleukin-12 (IL-12) and lymphocyte proliferation. Based on the many health problems that arise in Indonesia due to the presence of free radicals, the aim of the research is to conduct a literature review on the mechanism of action of herbal plants as immunomodulators and the methods used to determine the mechanism of action of natural immunomodulators. The method used to review this article is to carry out an online search process using several search engines such as PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest and Schoolar. Based on reference studies, several herbal plant extracts act as immunomodulators with different activities such as increasing the activity of Immunoglobulin M (IgM), reducing the number of leukocytes, stimulating the body's immunity with flavonoid content and increasing the ability of phagocytosis.

Abstract

One type of algae cultivated in Indonesia is the red algae Eucheuma cottoni. Red algae are able to produce active metabolite ingredients to protect themselves from attacks by disease and predators. Initially, algae was only used for vegetables and it was not known what substances were contained in algae. As time goes by, knowledge about algae continues to grow. The red algae Eucheuma cottoni contains the chemical carrageenan, a polysaccharide compound produced from various types of red algae that has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, anticoagulant and other biological activities. This research aims to determine the potential of red algae extract as an antibacterial. This research uses a literature study approach where references are obtained through 4 data bases, namely Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct and Garuda, then based on the search, 8 journals are obtained that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on the results of literature studies, it was found that red algae extract has antibacterial activity against the bacteria Salmonella thypi, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacilus subtilis, and Escherichia coli. Key words: (Antibacterial, Eucheuma cottoni, Red Algae).
