Abstract

Antioxidants are defined as inhibitors that work with the oxidation process, even at relatively small concentrations. Antioxidants are substances that can delay, slow down and prevent the oxidation process. Kenikir leaves contain flavonoid compounds, polyphenols, saponins, tannins, alkaloids and essential oils and also contain bioactive compounds such as ascorbic acid, quercetin, chlorogenic acid and polyphenolic compounds which function as antioxidants. The aim of this research was to determine the antioxidant activity test of the ethanol extract of Kenikir leaves using the FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) method. The Kenikir leaf extraction method uses the maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent to obtain Kenikir leaf ethanol extract. The ethanol extract of Kenikir leaves was reacted with several FRAP reagents and then measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a maximum wavelength of 720 nm. Quercetin as a comparison with the quercetin test results obtained a linearity equation of y = 0.0117x + 0.4212 with a correlation coefficient value of r = 0.9986. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Kenikir leaves had an antioxidant activity of 12.7464 mgQE/g extract.

Abstract

Parang romang (Boehmeria virgata (G.Forst) Guill) is a plant used to treat various infectious diseases, one of which is the digestive tract. Antibacterials are compounds that can inhibit or kill bacteria that cause infection. Endophytic fungi produce bioactive compounds in the form of antioxidants, anticancer, antiviral, antifungal and so on. This research uses the TLC-Bioatography method. The research started with the isolation of endophytic fungi and antagonist tests, which obtained active isolates against the test bacteria Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus subtilis, namely IFBV-6. Then this isolate was fermented and continued with testing using the TLC-Bioautography method. The resulting fermentate was dissolved in chloroform:methanol (5:1) solvent. Test results from TLC-Bioautography of IFBV-6 fermentate showed Rf values of 0.9, 0.81 and 0.58. In the case of Micrococcus luteus and bacillus subtilis bacteria, good Rf values from TLC show that there is quite good separation, ranging from 0.2-0.8, indicating clear antibacterial activity. In this test, each fermentation code has the same Rf value and number of spots. The results of identifying the chemical components of endophytic fungal isolates from parang romang leaves of Boehmeria virgata (G.Forst) Guill) gave positive results using alkaloid and saponin spotting.

Abstract

Fameflower Leaves (Talinum paniculatum (Jacq) Gaertn) are medicinal plants that communities have traditionally used due to their active compounds, such as saponins, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes, sterols, and polyphenols found in both the leaves and roots. This study aimed to determine the dose of ethanol extract of fameflower leaves affecting the histology of the spleen in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) following ovalbumin antigen stimulation, as well as to observe changes in the spleen tissue structure after the extract treatment. The study used 20 Wistar rats divided into four groups. The rats were first adapted for 2 weeks and then fasted for 8 hours before the treatment—a group I served as the standard control. Group II was induced with ovalbumin antigen. Groups III and IV were induced with the antigen, and the ethanol extract of fameflower leaves was administered at doses of 0.4g/kgBW and 0.8g/kgBW, respectively. The extract was administered orally for 7 days to the test animals. On day 8, the test animals were sacrificed, and their spleens were harvested for histological preparation using the Hematoxylin-Eosin staining method. Microscopic observation showed no histological damage in the spleen, such as inflammation, degeneration, congestion, hemorrhage, or necrosis. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of Bugis Ginseng leaves did not affect the spleen of rats at doses of 0.4g/kgBW and 0.8g/kgBW
