Abstract

The Mekar Makmur Women Farmers Group (KWT) in Ngadipuro Village, Wonotirto District, Blitar Regency, has abundant local coconut potential, but its utilization is still limited to household consumption. In fact, coconut derivative products such as Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) have high added value both economically and health-wise. The community service method is implemented through identification, socialization, technical training on VCO production with a controlled temperature chamber, business management training, and marketing assistance. To support the sustainability of the program, the team also handed over three temperature-controlled chambers and one stainless steel hydraulic coconut milk press to the KWT. ​​The results of the activity showed an increase in members' skills in operating the chamber, the production of a minimum of 5 liters of VCO with better quality according to fatty acid content tests, and the formation of a pilot VCO business unit. The appropriate technology provided has been proven to speed up the extraction process, improve hygiene, and produce clear, long-lasting VCO rich in medium-chain fatty acids. This activity has implications for strengthening the role of women in entrepreneurship based on local potential.

Abstract

In Rampal Celaket Village, Malang City, this study attempts to maximize the potential of celery (Apium graveolens) as a raw material for producing safe and eco-friendly liquid soap. Celery's flavonoid, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties are thought to be useful in shielding the skin from free radicals and germs, as well as in displacing the need for artificial chemical cleansers. Implementing useful and creative techniques for creating liquid soap and teaching the public about the advantages of herbal plants are both part of the production process. The activity's outcomes demonstrate that the community may manufacture high-quality liquid soap with an ideal antibacterial content that can be utilized on a daily basis or turned into a lucrative home business venture. It is anticipated that the creation of this liquid soap made from celery would improve skin health and encourage a spirit of entrepreneurship founded on regional creativity.

Abstract

Sweet potato, especially the purple variety, is a widely cultivated agricultural commodities known for its high antioxidant content, particularly anthocyanins and other bioactive compounds beneficial for skin health. While primarily consumed as food, sweet potatoes also hold potential for non-food applications, one of which is the production of natural-based solid soap. This study explores the potential of sweet potato extract as an active ingredient in solid soap production, evaluated through its physical, chemical, and functional properties. The method involves ethanol extraction of purple sweet potatoes, followed by a saponification process using NaOH concentrations ranging from 3.5% to 12.5%, combined with plant-based oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, and palm oil. The findings are expected to demonstrate that sweet potatoes offer more than just nutritional value, they can also serve as a natural, eco-friendly, and economically valuable component in the formulation of herbal solid soap.

Abstract

The production of liquid soap using natural raw materials such as pandan leaves and citrus fruits is an innovative effort to utilize local resources with the potential to improve the community’s economy. Pandan and citrus contain beneficial natural compounds, including distinctive aromas, antibacterial properties, and antioxidants, making them suitable ingredients for environmentally friendly personal care products. This activity aims to provide knowledge and practical skills to the community in processing natural materials into marketable liquid soap products, while also creating opportunities for small-scale household enterprises. The methods applied include raw material extraction, liquid soap formulation, as well as training in product packaging and marketing. The results indicate that liquid soap made from pandan and citrus has good quality, is safe for use, and is well accepted by consumers due to its natural ingredients and fresh fragrance. Furthermore, this activity enhances community creativity, self-reliance, and income. Therefore, the production of liquid soap based on pandan and citrus can serve as a sustainable alternative business that supports community economic development through the utilization of local potential.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to empower the community of Rampal Celaket Village, Malang City through training in making solid soap based on carrot extract (Daucus carota L.) which is rich in β-carotene and natural antioxidants. The implementation method was carried out through a participatory approach involving 25 PKK women as the main participants, including field survey stages, material presentations, and practical demonstrations of soap making using the cold process method. The soap making process is carried out by extracting fresh carrots, mixing them with coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) through saponification reactions, then molded and undergoing a curing process for 3-5 weeks. The results of the activity showed high enthusiasm from participants with a satisfaction rate of 96% and 100% motivation to develop skills further, and the soap products produced had good quality with yellowish orange color, solid texture, fresh aroma, and did not cause skin irritation. This program successfully opened new economic opportunities for the community with attractive profit margins, while increasing awareness of the use of environmentally friendly natural skin care products and supporting women's empowerment in developing micro-enterprises based on local potential.

Abstract

In daily life, papayas are often discarded and become waste due to overripeness or not being consumed in time. Based on their composition, papayas have strong potential as a base for non-food products due to their wide-ranging benefits. Papain enzymes, vitamins A, C, and E, as well as flavonoids and saponins found in papaya, have been shown to possess antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and can act as natural exfoliating agents for the skin. These characteristics make papaya a promising natural ingredient for developing body care products such as bar soap. Accordingly, a Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat activity was carried out to introduce the use of papaya as a raw material for natural bar soap. This initiative aimed not only to address the issue of papaya waste but also to educate the community on the economic potential of household-level food processing. The activity was conducted through an educational and participatory approach, involving socialization and hands-on training. As a result, the program received positive responses and high enthusiasm from participants, and helped introduce new skills with potential for independent application and added household economic value.

Abstract

Indonesia faces significant food security challenges driven by rapid population growth, urbanization, and agricultural land conversion. Malang City, with a dense population and ranked 42nd in the national Food Security Index (IKP), requires innovative approaches to strengthen urban agriculture. This community service program, conducted in Tunjungsekar Village, Lowokwaru District, introduced a modern urban farming system as a practical solution. The implementation included the construction of an ergonomic greenhouse using galvanum hollow and esther steel frames, along with the deployment of a 3D-FDM-based SCARA robot integrated with kinematics, PID control, and the Internet of Things (IoT) for automated irrigation and plant care. The results demonstrated a 40% increase in community participation from the initial discussion phase to installation, reflecting growing awareness and enthusiasm toward urban farming practices. This innovation not only improved efficiency and productivity but also contributed directly to the enhancement of Malang City’s Food Security Index. Furthermore, the robotic urban farming model is expected to be replicated in other urban areas as a strategic effort to support national food self-sufficiency programs and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

This community service program on electrical energy efficiency was implemented for IAES Indonesia employee partners, who faced a lack of understanding and skills in the safe, efficient, and economical use of electrical energy. The activity was conducted online with 56 participants and employed a pretest–posttest design to measure the training's impact. The instrument was a 25-item multiple-choice test covering five core competencies, with analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed that 47 participants experienced an increase in their scores, with the mean rank of increase (27.46) being higher than the mean rank of decrease (17.50). The highest increase occurred in competency in electrical panels and KWH meters (17.14 points). Practically, this activity provides direct benefits for partners in the form of increased energy literacy, changes in behavior towards more efficient electricity use, and potential savings in electricity operational costs in the workplace. As a follow-up, this program recommends ongoing mentoring, monitoring of energy-saving behaviors, and the integration of energy-efficiency policies into partners' work environments to ensure the sustainability of the activity's impact.

Abstract

Limited access to adequate bathing, washing, and toilet facilities (MCK) remains a significant problem for residents of RT-03/RW-10, Polaman Sub-Village, Kalirejo Village, Lawang District, Malang Regency, so that some residents still use the river to meet their basic sanitation needs, potentially reducing their health and environmental quality. This Community Service Activity aims to provide simple WASH facilities that meet sanitation standards while promoting behavioral changes toward clean and healthy living through community participation. The implementation methods included an initial survey and interviews to identify the socio-cultural and environmental conditions, discussions to develop solutions with the RT administrators and residents, socialization with the PKK women's group, the construction of the MCK through the self-help efforts of students, donors, and the community during July-October 2025, and an evaluation in November 2025 through field observations, interviews, and documentation. The results of the activity include the construction of a simple, functional, and easy-to-operate toilet two units with a layout that meets comfort standards and better manages wastewater flow; increased community understanding of the importance of sanitation and environmental conservation; and a stronger spirit of cooperation in maintaining shared facilities. Overall, this program was deemed effective by residents and neighborhood association administrators in improving access to basic sanitation, reducing dependence on rivers as a means of sanitation, and supporting the creation of a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable residential environment, while also providing a model for simple sanitation facilities that can be replicated in similar areas.
