Abstract

This study delves into the use of satirical comments and political humor in TikTok videos in Indonesia, utilizing a critical discourse analysis (CDA) framework. The study aims to investigate how political issues and figures are depicted through satirical comments in society of the digital natives. The analysis focused on TikTok users’ linguistic and discursive strategies to criticize and satirize political events, figures, and policies. The study used a collection of TikTok videos. It employed a multi-modal approach, analyzing the textual content and visual and audio elements contributing to humor and satire. A qualitative methodology combining content analysis with discourse analysis techniques was used to identify recurring themes, rhetorical devices, and humor patterns in the satirical comments. Specifically, the application of CDA facilitated the deconstruction of power dynamics embedded within the satirical discourse, revealing how TikTok users leverage humor to challenge dominant political narratives. The findings revealed that TikTok users used linguistic devices such as irony, sarcasm, parody, and wordplay to convey their satirical messages. The satirical comments often targeted political figures, policies, and events, focusing on corruption, governance, and social inequality issues. Through humor, TikTok users expressed their dissent and critique of the political system while also participating in creating an alternative public sphere for political discourse. However, the study noted that these satirical comments could be controversial, as they may perpetuate stereotypes or reinforce existing political biases.

The aim is to identify and describe the women and men language features reflected in the dialogues from two main characters. A descriptive qualitative method was conducted to analyze the data, which was sourced from the interactions between the two characters. The observation method was utilized to collect the data, and two theories were applied: Lakoff (1975) to identify women language features whereas to identify the men language features proposed from Coates’s theory (2004). The findings revealed nine out of ten features were present by the two main characters, with the exception of precise color terms. All five features of men language features were also identified. Mostly, intensifier is the most frequently used women language features, reflecting how the main characters communicate more expressively. In contrast, command and directives were the dominant men language features that employed by the two main characters, revealing their tendency to assert control and direct actions in their interactions.

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the values of Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) in teaching English in non-formal setting to fifteen young learners (YLs) from five schools in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. The study has been informed by the theory of TBLT in English teaching. The study used qualitative case study research design at the data when collected through a phase of teaching of six meetings where the researcher acted as teacher and interviews with five participants. The data were analysed qualitatively using thematic analysis, in terms of TBLT implementation to assist YLs learn English and participants responses to the values of TBLT implementation.  The results show that two themes occurred, involving 1) the implementation of TBLT and students’ learning which focuses more on the use of input-based tasks and 2) the students’ responses on the TBLT implementation including positive attitudes and challenges towards TBLT. The use of input-based tasks can enhance YLs’ vocabulary mastery and maintain their motivation to learn English. This is in line with the evidence that YLs are ready to learn English meaningfully when they have sufficient vocabulary input as a language element to learn a foreign language. It is recommended that TBLT be implemented in more diverse context in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article explores The Handmaid’s Tale Season I as both a feminist dystopia and a cautionary tale, offering critical insights into contemporary issues of gender inequality, ideological control, and the politicization of women’s bodies. Set in the theocratic regime of Gilead, the series highlights the systemic subjugation of women and the dangers of authoritarian governance masked by religious rhetoric. The study uses a qualitative method to examine visual and narrative elements from ten purposively selected episodes, chosen for their strong thematic relevance to gendered oppression. Library research complements this analysis by providing supporting feminist theory and socio-political context. Three central themes are addressed: the politics of bodily autonomy and state control, the enforcement of patriarchal power structures, and the fusion of religion and governance as a tool of subjugation. These themes reveal strong parallels between the fictional society of Gilead and ongoing struggles in the United States, such as the rollback of reproductive rights and rising political conservatism. By examining these connections, the article not only warns against the normalization of oppression but also encourages critical awareness and public engagement. Ultimately, the series serves as a cultural mirror that can inspire societal reflection, advocacy, and concrete progress toward gender equality and human rights.

Abstract

English is an essential language used in various aspects of life, and formal education remains the primary setting where students learn English. In Indonesian Junior High Schools, English is commonly taught using resources provided by the school, with textbooks or learning modules serving as key materials. Most of these schools have adopted the Emancipated Curriculum (Merdeka Curriculum) while some, particularly Islamic schools, supplement it with the Integrated Islamic School Network (JSIT) Curriculum. The JSIT Curriculum combines an integrated learning system with a full-day school model, emphasizing Islamic values and character building. Given these unique educational settings, it is important to explore teachers’ specific needs for English reading modules that align with the characteristics and goals of Islamic schools. This qualitative study involved 25 English teachers from Islamic junior high schools in Magelang Regency. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The results reveal that teachers encounter challenges in teaching reading comprehension, primarily due to a lack of suitable learning resources reflecting Islamic schools' identity and educational objectives. Therefore, there is a significant need to develop English reading modules tailored to the values, vision, and mission of Islamic education to enhance classroom instruction.

Abstract

Academic success among EFL learners is closely linked to their foundational skills in reading comprehension. However, many students continue to struggle with understanding English texts within a limited timeframe. This difficulty stems from the fundamental purpose of reading: to comprehend written content in order to follow specific instructions. Since cognitive and metacognitive strategies are interrelated where metacognitive strategies oversee and regulate cognitive processes, their combined use is considered effective in enhancing reading comprehension skills. This study aims to investigate the extent to which cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies simultaneously impact EFL students' reading comprehension using mixed methods (quantitative-qualitative) of one-group pre-experimental design. Data were obtained through English literacy pre-test and post-tests, questionnaires, and classroom observation. The treatments were cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies taught by two expert teachers to 60 EFL students. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to investigate EFL students' reading comprehension and their reading strategy awareness before and after treatment. Inferential statistics using paired sample t-tests revealed a significant difference between EFL students’ reading comprehension before and after treatment (p-value<0.05). Analysis of multiple linear regression also revealed a significant impact of cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies on EFL students’ reading comprehension simultaneously (p-value<0.05 and FComputed>FTable) with an impact of 43.8% (moderate). Qualitative data analyzed descriptively revealed that almost all EFL students showed positive attitudes during the treatment given. This study is expected to present significant contributions for teachers to implement various cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies in their reading classes to enhance EFL students’ reading comprehension and assist them in overcoming the difficulties they face during the reading process.
