Abstract

This study delves into the use of satirical comments and political humor in TikTok videos in Indonesia, utilizing a critical discourse analysis (CDA) framework. The study aims to investigate how political issues and figures are depicted through satirical comments in society of the digital natives. The analysis focused on TikTok users’ linguistic and discursive strategies to criticize and satirize political events, figures, and policies. The study used a collection of TikTok videos. It employed a multi-modal approach, analyzing the textual content and visual and audio elements contributing to humor and satire. A qualitative methodology combining content analysis with discourse analysis techniques was used to identify recurring themes, rhetorical devices, and humor patterns in the satirical comments. Specifically, the application of CDA facilitated the deconstruction of power dynamics embedded within the satirical discourse, revealing how TikTok users leverage humor to challenge dominant political narratives. The findings revealed that TikTok users used linguistic devices such as irony, sarcasm, parody, and wordplay to convey their satirical messages. The satirical comments often targeted political figures, policies, and events, focusing on corruption, governance, and social inequality issues. Through humor, TikTok users expressed their dissent and critique of the political system while also participating in creating an alternative public sphere for political discourse. However, the study noted that these satirical comments could be controversial, as they may perpetuate stereotypes or reinforce existing political biases.

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the illocutionary acts present in Retno Marsudi’s speech during the general debate of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. This study aims to describe the types of illocutionary acts employed, discerning the most and least frequent types as well as their implications. The data were analyzed by the descriptive qualitative method, and collected by finding out the video, watching the video, transcribing the speech video, and then identifying the data that were related to the theory. The writers used Searle’s theory for the types of illocutionary acts, which categorizes illocutionary acts into five types: representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The findings from the study revealed that there are a total of 87 data points found in the speech, with directive acts being the most dominant with a total of 37 (42,5%), followed by representative at 27 (31%), commissive at 13 (15%), declarative at 6 (6,9%), and expressive being the least dominant at 4 (4,6%). The findings indicate that directive acts are primarily used to convey urgent messages and prompt action, while expressive acts are the least dominant, reflecting Retno Marsudi’s emphasis on advocating for action rather than expressing personal emotions or attitudes

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discover how female independence is portrayed in the Pride and Prejudice (2005) movie and examine the effects of this portrayal. This study applies feminist theory and is classified as a literary study. To analyze the data, researchers used qualitative data analysis. The result reveals that Elizabeth Bennet exemplifies various facets of female autonomy, highlighting the interplay between existential freedom and societal constraints. Her assertiveness, seen in rejecting Mr. Collins and seeking genuine connections over financial stability, underscores the positive effects of resisting traditional gender roles and societal expectations. This defiance promotes critical reflection on norms and encourages societal evolution. The narrative emphasizes economic independence, with Elizabeth's pursuit of love rather than financial security enhancing her relationship with Mr. Darcy and contributing to societal well-being. It also explores sexual freedom and the ambiguity of freedom, showcasing the positive impact of her autonomy on her family and society's perception of her unconventional choices. The study suggests that by examining the Pride and Prejudice (2005) movie, readers and other researchers can gain insights into the portrayal of female independence. This research may serve as a foundation for those with different backgrounds or methods, such as psychological or Marxist approaches, to build on and undertake studies from a broader perspective.

Abstract

The Merdeka Belajar curriculum was established to promote Indonesia's educational goal and as part of attempts to restore learning. It is a more flexible curriculum framework that focuses on necessary information while also building students' character and competence. However, not all schools have implemented the Merdeka Belajar curriculum based on its principles. Therefore, this study aims to know the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum for seventh-grade English lessons in Gunungkidul. This study employed a qualitative method to get the data from three English teachers. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and field observations. The results of the study revealed that the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum in grade seven junior high schools in Gunungkidul has not fully followed the Merdeka Belajar curriculum concept. Only one of the three teachers implemented the mandated curriculum according to the concept. Others demonstrated to have implemented several concepts, such as giving diagnostic tests to grade seven students, student-centered learning, teaching according to students' learning styles and abilities, and implementing formative and summative assessments following the concept of an independent curriculum. Nonetheless, the teachers enthusiastically support the adoption of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum for a variety of reasons, including material flexibility, applicability to real-world demands, and the development of creativity.

To obtain data validity, researchers applied methodological triangulation. Next, the qualitative data was analyzed using the model proposed by Miles and Huberman in (Purbaya et al., 2024) with the following steps: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusion. The research revealed that: (1) 48% of students suffer from moderate levels of anxiety, namely students become nervous or restless when their speaking ability seems hampered, (2) 6 factors cause speaking anxiety in students, namely; level of English proficiency, fear of making mistake, low self-esteem, lack of preparation, motivation, learning techniques; and (3) students use four effective strategies such as preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer-seeking strategy to overcome their anxious feelings.
