Abstract

This study examines Sundanese–Indonesian code-mixing in Sule’s podcast featuring Dedi Mulyadi by analyzing its forms, contributing factors, and social functions in digital discourse. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in sociolinguistic analysis, the study analyzes spoken utterances containing Sundanese–Indonesian code-mixing from a YouTube podcast video. Data were collected through observation and transcription of podcast utterances and analyzed by identifying and classifying code-mixing according to linguistic units and Muysken’s framework of insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Contributing factors and social functions were interpreted contextually based on speakers’ relationships, conversational topics, and communicative purposes. The findings show that Indonesian functions as the dominant language, while Sundanese occurs in words, phrases, and clauses. The identified forms are insertion and alternation, while congruent lexicalization was not found. Code-mixing occurs for emphasis, humor, emotional expression, indirect criticism, intimacy, and cultural identity. Its occurrence is influenced by relationships, conversational situations, topics, and communicative purposes. Sule’s role as a comedian and Dedi Mulyadi’s role as a politician also shape Sundanese use as a resource for humor, criticism, solidarity, and cultural identity. These findings demonstrate that code-mixing functions not only as a linguistic practice but also as a contextual social and communicative strategy in digital public discourse.

Abstract

Religious moderation has become an important educational orientation in Indonesian madrasahs, yet its representation in Arabic language textbooks remains insufficiently examined from a critical discourse perspective. This study aims to examine how religious moderation is constructed and represented in the reading texts of a Grade XI Arabic-language textbook on Madrasah Aliyah based on KMA No. 183 of 2019. Employing a qualitative approach and document analysis, the study applies Norman Fairclough’s CDA through three interconnected dimensions: text, discursive practice, and social practice. The analysis focuses on lexical choices, grammatical structures, modality, metaphors, social actor representations, text production, pedagogical use, and broader educational and religious moderation policies. The findings reveal that religious moderation is constructed through three interconnected ideological layers: policy, pedagogy, and discourse. At the textual level, moderation is represented through contextual lexical choices, social actors, and linguistic constructions that normalize tawassuth, tahanun, i‘tidal, tasamuh, bushwah, and shura. At the discursive practice level, these values are recontextualized through contextual themes, communicative activities, and pedagogical functions, transforming policy into language-learning content. At the social practice level, the textbook connects national moderation policies with Islamic educational values and everyday social relations. This study demonstrates that religious moderation is constructed discursively through linguistic, pedagogical, ideological, and policy interactions.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the language abilities of children in Group A at Fermata Bunda Kindergarten, Biparae District, Bandung Regency, through the storytelling method assisted by audio-visual media. The study employed a CAR approach conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects were 11 children in Group A. Data were collected through observation, descriptive rating scales, and documentation and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results indicated a gradual improvement in the language abilities of children following the implementation of the storytelling method using audio-visual media. In the initial condition, only 18% of children demonstrated the ability to understand the presented information, which increased to 36% in Cycle I. Improvements were also observed in children’s attention, story comprehension, vocabulary use, ability to answer questions, confidence in expressing ideas, and ability to retell information. The study established an achievement criterion of 80% as the indicator of success. Audio-visual media supported storytelling by presenting information through integrated visual and auditory stimuli, making learning more concrete, engaging, and communicative. The findings indicate that audio-visual media-assisted storytelling can improve children’s language abilities and serve as an effective alternative for stimulating language development in early childhood education.

Abstract

This study presents a literature review of presidential linguistic strategies in political discourse, focusing on research developments, theoretical approaches, and research objects in previous studies. The review examines 25 articles published in scientific journals and retrieved from Google Scholar and DOAJ, with the search limited to 2022–2026. Articles were identified using the keywords “political discourse”, “critical discourse”, and “president” for English literature, and “presiden”, “wacana politik”, and “wacana kritis” for Indonesian literature. The findings indicate that research on presidential linguistic strategies is dominated by critical discourse analysis and speeches as research objects, with 10 studies employing critical discourse analysis and 20 examining speeches. Studies using critical discourse analysis primarily explore the relationship between language and ideology, power, social reality, and leadership image. Other approaches include discourse analysis, rhetoric, speech acts, psycholinguistics, systemic functional linguistics, sociolinguistics, semiotics, interjections, euphemisms, and intertextual analysis. This study contributes to the literature by providing a novel synthesis of existing research, identifying dominant patterns, and highlighting directions for future research.

Abstract

Qirāʾāt ʿAsharah education has traditionally relied on sequential and complex pedagogical procedures, particularly memorization of matn, study of transmission chains, and gradual mastery of individual qirāʾāt. Although previous studies have examined qirāʾāt instruction, limited attention has been given to integrating qirāʾāt mapping with a Direct Method that enables learners to engage with recitational variants systematically from the outset. This study examines the conceptual foundations, learning principles, and potential contribution of the Direct Method to modernizing Qirāʾāt ʿAsharah education. Employing a library research method, this study analyzes classical and contemporary literature on qirāʾāt, Qur’anic recitation pedagogy, direct language-learning approaches, and the transmission of Qirāʾāt ʿAsharah. The findings indicate that the Direct Method can be conceptually formulated through three interconnected principles: direct engagement with qirāʾāt variants, systematic mapping of differences among the ten canonical readings, and integrated practice of riwāyāt, ṭuruq, and uṣūl. Qirāʾāt mapping provides a structured framework for organizing variant readings, while the Direct Method may reduce dependence on lengthy preliminary theoretical stages and facilitate engagement with practical recitation. The novelty lies in integrating qirāʾāt mapping and the Direct Method as a conceptual model for modernization. Further empirical research is required to validate its effectiveness.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum requires school principals to play an effective managerial role in guiding the planning, organization, and evaluation of the learning process at the school level, including at SMP Negeri 23 Medan. However, the actual practice of this managerial role in the field has not been thoroughly explored; therefore, this study aims to describe the managerial role of school principals in the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly in the aspects of planning, organizing resources, and evaluating implementation. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with the principal of SMP Negeri 23 Medan, who is directly involved in and responsible for policy-making regarding the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum serving as the primary informant, supported by several teachers directly involved in the learning process as supplementary informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Data validity was verified through triangulation of sources and techniques. The research findings indicate that school principals perform three key managerial functions in supporting the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum: planning, organizing, and evaluation. These findings illustrate how the managerial role of school principals contributes to creating conditions that support efforts to improve the quality of learning in schools.

Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of university debaters, who had represented their universities in regional and national competitions, in developing critical thinking, self-efficacy, and public speaking through competitive debate. Although previous research demonstrates the positive effects of debate on these competencies, little is known about how debaters themselves experience, interpret, and internalize these developmental processes. Employing a qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological design, six university debaters were selected through purposive criterion sampling, and data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Moustakas’ phenomenological procedure. Findings indicate that the three competencies developed gradually, non-linearly, and unevenly across their components rather than as a uniform outcome. Critical thinking developed through constructing evidence-based arguments and evaluating opposing claims, though its transfer to everyday reasoning remained limited to low-stakes situations. Self-efficacy developed through competitive achievement and thorough preparation, with confidence transferring to classroom presentations and thesis defenses. Public speaking competence developed unevenly, with organization and evidence use improving earliest while speaking anxiety decreased but was not fully eliminated. These findings suggest that competitive debate was experienced as a gradual, experiential, and reflective context for developing these competencies, offering theoretical insight into non-linear competency development and practical implications for process-oriented debate coaching.
